Breadcrumb Replacement

Good Morning,

Just wanted to give a tip on replacing breadcrumbs in foods such as meatloaf, meatballs, etc. My husband crushed up Corn Chex and added a splash of milk, and added it to the meat mixture, and the meatloaf came out great!

Any other substitutes that you have found to work?

Chex are not gluten free. They have barley malt extract in them which is not safe for the gluten free diet. You can read the corn chex label here: Open Original Shared Link

Some other alternatives for meatloaf and meat balls are quinoa flakes and minute rice

I bought Erewhon's Crispy Rice cereal and decimated them into a breadcrumb-like consistency. It turned out terrific. Then I just added some herbs and spices to it. I have used this to oven bake pork chops and chicken and it worked just like regular breadcrumbs. I hear you can do the same with corn flakes too, but haven't tried it yet.

You can get gluten free Corn Chex style cereal at most healthfood stores (and some regular stores also carry this) it is made by Health Valley and called Corn Crunch-Ems. They also make Rice Crunch-ems. They look identical to the chex cereals, but don't have the barley malt in them. We love them both at my house!

For breadcrumbs I have used dry toasted gluten-free bread, and crushed cereal. Also I have gotten the Rice crumbs that are seasoned from the Gluten Free Pantry, and those work great when I am in a hurry. I have used potato flakes also (instant mashed potatos).

      Hi Ya , yes I have access to my records. Now if I only knew what I was looking for?? But for me this not important. I already know not to eat or drink certain ones. And I also push the packet on occasionally. Whatnisnto be learned? What's the value to be learned?

      Hello, Jeff and yes, PTL! The word "marker" is typically used in connection with gene testing but gene testing is not usually where testing for celiac disease starts. It usually starts with blood work looking for antibodies that are more or less specific to celiac disease. The most popular antibody test ordered by doctors is the tTG-IGA test but there are others. Here is an overview: Do you have access to your medical record/test results online? What is your next step with this? I assume you are not yet eating gluten free.

      @lizzie42, I have dermatitis herpetiformis outbreaks when I am exposed to foods high in iodine.  Iodine can cause dermatitis herpetiformis to flair up badly.  So I avoid high iodine foods like dairy products, crustaceans (shrimp, crab, lobster, shellfish), Eggs, and iodized table salt.  Spinach,  potatoes, kale, and kelp are high in iodine, too. The antibodies that cause dermatitis herpetiformis are tTg 3 IgA.  The tests for Celiac Disease measure tTg 2 IgA antibodies.  The dermatitis herpetiformis tTg3 antibodies can hang around for two years or more and become more active when exposed to iodine without having gluten present.  Dermatitis Herpetiformis is pressure sensitive and...
