  1. Thanks, everyone! Okay, so I'll hold out hope for me, then I've been on a *virtually* gluten-free diet for a few years (occasional contaminated oats; I tried barley and rye on a few occasions; rice milk with a bit of barley protein; have no idea about my cosmetics), but my blood test was still + . . . can't wait until the biopsy is over!!! As for...
  2. [i see my topic description was too long . . . I was asking if it is worth trying to go gluten free for someone in their mid 80s.] I have two questions after reading this news blurb: https://www.celiac.com/st_prod.html?p_prodid=1351 Sooo....it seems that people with celiac over 30 don't have as much of a chance of responding to a gluten-free diet even...
  3. Potatoes are one of those vegetables that cross react with certain pollens (causing oral allergy syndrome). I used to be fine with cooked potatoes, but now they make my mouth and throat itchy and sometimes cause hives. There is a connection between latex allergy and potato allergy (similar plant protein.)
  4. I didn't read this entire thread so i don't know if i'm repeating what was already said, but there was an interesting article in the _Lancet_ on this topic: http://eutils.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/quer...t_uids=12826451 I read the article . . . the idea is that in people genetically predisposed to get celiac candida might trigger it. . . also that perhaps...

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

I didn't mean that quite literally. And I'm one of the people they wouldn't be able to accomodate (among other things can't have corn/wheat/soy/egg/nuts/peanuts/most raw fruit and vegetables.) What I meant is that there should be an awareness in general that people have dietary restrictions and companies should provide some snack options so that they are...
  6. Penguin, forgot to address the second point you raised. (Was kind of tired last night) Yes, I'm concerned that I'm not eating enough barley. I've been researching this . . . all I've been able to find is that barley is a low gluten grain. Someone from a celiac association thought that maybe gluten contains 30% less gluten than wheat . . . but I'm not...

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

That may be true. It is sad that there are so many people with autoimmune problems these days . . . but because dietary restrictions are becoming *so* common maybe companies will start to realize that they can very easily win very loyal customers by accomodating people with dietary restrictions of all types.
  8. I'm dealing with this very question right now, and I've found the conversation in this thread to be very helpful. Thanks
  9. Thanks for the replies. And I appreciate the info. on the tTG test. I think I'm going to have to talk to the GI doctor before the biopsy to figure out how he is going to proceed if the biopsy is negative. If he puts a lot of stock in the biopsy I might not want to do it. . . .but if he sees it the way I do I might want to proceed. I'm wanting the biopsy...

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

Yeah, it would be great if people would be more aware of dietary restrictions and provide appropriate alternatives . . . And thanks for the support on the allergy issue. by the way, peanut allergies are not rare or not rarer than celiac disease. it affects 1% of US adults and 3% of American children . . . that's not taking other food allergies into account...
  11. Seems like I come up with a new question everyday. Okay, so here's what I've been thinking about today. To recap: have been on a very very low gluten diet almost approaching gluten free (contaminated oats on the rare occasion, occasionally rice milk. might have had barley like once in the past year). blood test results for gliadin antibodies...
  12. Hey--I'm Canadian! (although I do have American citizenship too . . . but was born and raised in Canada). I'm living in Toronto right now.
  13. I did a few foods diet awhile ago---my allergist put me on it. But he didn't give me very much direction or info. So I bought this book by Janice Vickerstaff Joneja, PhD, RDN. (_Dealing with Food Allergies_) She explains everything! (she deals with intolerances + allergies) + gives lots of tips on what to eat on the diet + recipes for the diet. I highly...

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

Russ, Thanks for the heads up about the Propofol. I'm actually trying to figure out the safe alternatives to diazemuls and fentanyl (sp.?) right now . . . both of which my GI doctor was going to give me for the flexible sigmoidoscopy and gastroscopy that I'm scheduled for. Good thing I researched this---I'm anaphylactic to egg and soy so diazemuls will...
  15. Hi Andrea, That's interesting that you're allergic to wheat too. I wonder how common it is to have one's immune system attacking wheat from all different directions (celiac and allergies involve different parts of the immune system). Sounds like you are very sensitive to trace amounts of gluten!! I don't react to unflavoured, unfortified rice milk ...
  16. Everyone has been so helpful here--I really appreciate it! I have some more questions for you guys. #1 I had an appointment today with my respirologist who referred me to the GI specialist (in the same hospital). . . so I managed to get my test results (the GI specialist just said that one was positive and one was negative). I tested negative...
  17. Thanks so much! Okay, so I guess I'd better be sedated . . . and I won't interrogate my GI doc about whether the other test is needed (since I'll be sedated anyways). Floridanative, that sounds awful! I can see why you switched doctors. I was awake when i got my wisdom teeth extracted (had to go to a dental surgeon . . . they were growing in sideways...
  18. As some of you might know from reading my other posts, I'm considering getting a biopsy done after inconclusive test results. (one test was positive and one negative). The doctor also wants to do a flexible sigmoidoscopy for other reasons. From reading some info. on this site, though, I'm getting the sense that the biopsy is not usually that involved...
  19. Thanks for your input. I'll think about it. It's just such a hard decision!
  20. Hi Nini, You raise some good points. My mom entirely agrees with you--she just thinks I should avoid gluten and forget about the biopsy (she is worried that I could have an adverse drug reaction or something). And actually, at first the GI specialist told me that he thought that I had a gluten intolerance if not celiac and questioned whether the test...
  21. Haven't been definitively diagnosed with celiac yet---am going to have a biopsy after a positive blood test result--I have experienced some "brain fog" but not as serious as some of the posters here. Has anyone had a mild case of it? I tend to be absentminded . . . have a tendency to leave the stovetop on, my keys in the door, etc. I have a difficult time...
  22. Thanks for the info! I haven't really checked into ingredients of cosmetics, the oats I was having occasionally would be contaminated . . . and the millet I eat probably is too. If I can't eat this brand anymore, I don't know what I'll do----Bob's Red Mill products are not safe for people with tree nut allergies (there's a possibility of cross contamination...
  23. Hi Leah, Thanks for the reply. I've been wheat-free for awhile . . . it has been at least 3 years. Between the time of the wheat allergy diagnosis and Oct. 2004, I ate *a lot* of oats (but not rye . . . maybe I had barley a few times, but very infrequently). Then I went on an elimination diet (which my allergist put me on) . . . rye and oats were out...
  24. Hi, Warning: long post to follow! Feel free to skim and pick and choose which questions to answer. I was wondering whether I had celiac disease, but since I have been on a gluten free diet, the GI specialist didn't think that the blood test would show anything. But he did some blood tests anyways. Well, one test was positive and one test was...
