  1. Well, Kiddos, I've been dx'd with MS. Yuck. I had hoped it wasn't that, but it is. Anyway, one doc I visited about treatment said the first thing to do is to go gluten free. Well, I've already done that, so am ahead of the game there. She said that many researchers actually believe MS to be an inflammatory disease (not necessarily an autoimmune disease...

    ARCHIVED Beri Beri

Hey Eagle: Beriberi, huh? Wow. Well, celiac can certainly cause malnutrition. I am in the process of a dx for neuro problems that include back spasms, weak legs and arms. My PCP only tested me for B12, which was in the 600's. I guess she feels that if my B12 is w/i normal ranges, the rest of my ranges should be OK. Hmmm. How were your other...
  3. Hi acod: Wow, as a mom, I know how hard it is to watch your children go through problems like your son's. I have 4 kiddos ranging in age from 16 -- 24. My 24 year old just got back from doing a year tour in Iraq! Talk about daily angst. I can't address your question as I'm in the process of diagnosing what's going on with me, so don't have any...
  4. Hi Out There: Can/will anyone tell me the best way to prepare buckwheat? I'm trying to keep my digestive system running smoothly and want to eat some things that will help. I have been eating a very selective elimination diet (only meats and veggies) and have found that I need to add some grains, so bought some quinoa and buckwheat but don't really know...
  5. Thanks for your input and understanding, Ev!! I have taken my diet down to just meats & veggies, but adding little things here and there seems to have proven my current intolerance to most other things. Sigh. Where are the days of eating pizza & stuff? lol It's better to not eat those things, I know, but I'm getting bored trying to figure out...
  6. I have experienced a weird symptom that I wonder if any of you have had or know anything about. It seems that when I have eaten a questionable food, I get this adrenaline surge feeling after eating and AND when I'm going to the bathroom (2). It's almost like an anxiety reaction, but purely physical. My heart doesn't race, but it feels like it is. I...
  7. When my son came back from Mexico -- he was there for 3 months -- the bottom of his feet were completely black!!!! His doc just happened to have done some volunteer work in Mexico a few years earlier, so id'd the black stuff as fungus. (Really gross.) I don't think any other of the docs at the clinic would have known what it was. Has your son been dx...
  8. Beginning about 7 years ago, I could not eat any latex foods: bananas, kiwi, split peas, almonds, etc. If I did, my throat would immediately begin developing gas bubbles -- it felt like I was trying to swallow a soft ball! The only thing that would help was to chew peppermint gum real quickly. Peppermint deals with gas production in a great way. Anyway...
  9. Allergic vs. intolerant. Hmmm So if a person's allergic to soy, shellfish, peanuts, etc., they can expect an allergic reaction (systemic), but not an intestinal reaction? (unless one is both allergic and intolerant). As I understand it, food allergies can be tested by a blood test. So how does a person test for food intolerances? Is there an accurate...
  10. About 6 years ago I lost about 100 lbs. It seems that I would often have fatty stools during this 9 month process. I didn't cut out gluten per se, but did eat very few carb foods, sticking mainly to proteins and veggies. At the time, I thought that the fatty/mucousy stools were a result of the fat being eliminated from my body. Maybe this was naiive!...
  11. I ate 3 pieces of whole grain toast yesterday as a self-test, and man were the results not fun! I've been gluten free for a few weeks (probably a little here & there -- do Reeses Peanut Butter Cups count?) Anyway, my throat felt itchy after I ate the toast. A couple of hours later, my voice got weak and my jaw felt like it was being squeezed. I...
  12. What are probiotics? And where do I get them?
  13. Wow -- the alien analogy is a cool one! lol Thanks for all the input everyone. I think I'll just have to calm down and take it one day at a time. I'll let the meat and veggies do their thing and stay away from the more exciting foods for now (until I get a handle on my situation.) I'm thinking of adding an enzyme or something to my supplement regimine...
  14. Hmmmm that's interesting. I get a similar feeling on my face (across my left cheek.) sometimes I do feel it in my rt. forearm.
  15. Ok, so canola makes my guts quiver. Yesterday Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia gave me immediate D. And this morning eating an egg seems to have made my legs weak. Wow. All I seem to be able to eat is whole meats and veggies right now!!! It's getting a bit tedious! I have an appt later this month with an integrative med doc to try to figure out what in the...
  16. Thank you, Riceguy!! This is such a great forum for resources!! Have a great day!
  17. Hi Guys: I added canola oil to my diet last night and BOY did I regret it!!!! My insides were trembling all night! It's such a weird and disturbing sensation -- not natural at all. Does anyone else have reactions to canola? Does anyone else have trembling insides when reacting to foods? I need to find a good gastro specialist. Anyone have any...
  18. I'm not exactly sure where to get sublingual methylcobalamin. I stopped at the health food grocer today and the cashier there said she didn't think they had any. Went to the B12 section, and couldn't find it. Any suggestions on where to get it? Do most health food stores carry it?
  19. Thanks for the welcome Jersey! I'm still sorting through, trying for a dx. Many things that come up I instantly suspect as being part of the dx puzzle. I did a google search last night and found some information pointing to a spasm of the larynx. I hope it's just that and not some weird thyroid issue! Time will tell. I also looked into the side effects...
  20. Hi Guys: For the past few weeks I've been experiencing the feeling of a lump in my throat. I think it's either a gluten reaction, or I'm allergic to my antibiotic, or both. I can swallow and everything, but it's been hanging there almost all day. This comes and goes. At first I thought it was maybe anxiety. And maybe it is, but I don't feel anxious...
  21. Thanks, Carla. I had a ton of blood drawn this week (at my insistance). My PCP added Lyme to the list as well as B12, Folate, IgA EMA, serum IgA and Anylase/Cipase (sp?). I've been only really gluten-free for maybe a week, so am thinking it shouldn't affect the tests. You seem to be a very vocal member of this forum, and I want to personally thank...
  22. Are these symptoms typical of either celiac disease or other food-related sensitivities? Migraine (accompanied with upper sinus drainage) Anxiety Lump in throat Gas (burping and "wind". Wind does not expel easily) Stomach pains (small, sharp here and there) Intestinal bloated feeling Weakness in legs and arms (some tingling and muscle twitches)...
  23. Wow, I thank you guys for all the information. I think I'll push for the Lyme testing even though I'm sure my docs will not be for it!
  24. Thanks for all the great input!!!!!!!!!
