ARCHIVED Grain Alcohol Has Gluten?
jen-schall replied to Shamilton's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As far as I know - and I'm pretty certain - any grain-derived alcohol contains gluten. Depending on distillation processes, some companies insist the gluten molecules are "removed," but most doctors, including mine, recommend you still not partake, just to be safe. Grain alcohol is what causes most of the problems with natural or artificial flavors containing... -
I know this particular discussion was originally started a few months ago and may be better now, but I still felt compelled to add to it. First of all, I wanted to tell you that celiac often causes depression, sometimes simply because the body just can't get going with no nutrients being absorbed. it's not because it's the person's fault or because something...

ARCHIVED Soy Flour Is Ok Right?
jen-schall replied to lauradawn's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
yep, it's fine unless you're allergic to soy. there are so many non-gluten flours I never heard of before! soy flour, tapioca flour, fava bean flour! and combining them tends to help the recipes really taste good, or more "normal"! get yourself some good cookbooks and bake away! a thing to note is that a lot of gluten-free flours need to be refrigerated... -
Burger King fries are gluten free. yay! McDonalds fries are, too, but they have beef in them, and a lot of people don't know that! Wendy's fries ARE NOT gluten free! too bad. but their Frostys are!! and Chipotle is great, and gluten-free friendly. hope this helps!

I'm not much of a fast food person, but I do miss french fries. I just found out that BK french fries contain no gluten, and they are made in dedicated fryers. even in some kind of run-down BKs, the employees still all chimed in, when I asked, that french fries are always kept separate from onion rings, etc. I have had the fries twice since with no problems...

ARCHIVED Cigarettes?

if the gluten doesn't bug you, the formaldehyde will! etc! -
ARCHIVED Lays Gluten Free Products
jen-schall replied to Thomas's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
the only thing I'm confused about is that they also have an MSG-free listing, and some of the gluten-free products aren't on that list. doesn't MSG always have gluten?? -
ARCHIVED Travel Lasvegas
jen-schall replied to celiacfreeman's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I call restaurants ahead and talk to chefs, and I bring a lot of food with me. if I'm flying, I typically bring a carry-on that's practically all food! there are some really good gluten-free pretzels made by Glutino and by Ener-G. they're available online. then as you eat, your luggage gets lighter: bonus! also, there are at least 2 breweries that... -
do you mean she's smearing it on things, like on walls or something? or maybe it's a term I'm not familiar with. how old is she? I have an extensive child care background so maybe I could be of some help.

ARCHIVED Question For Any Really Underweight Celiac's?
jen-schall replied to ronapa's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I could never gain weight until going gluten-free. the going is still slow (I've only been diagnosed about 4 months) but the change is starting to be significant. definitely get yourself checked out! are you fatigued all the time, too? my quality of life is just so much better now. I never would have believed it. -
ARCHIVED Recovering Anorexic/bulimic And Scared
jen-schall replied to bessiejay's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I can totally relate! I found out about my celiac disease from being in an ED program. it's so crazy. now the doctors are all like, maybe your "disorder" was just because of celiac! but obviously, the behaviors and feelings that go along with the ED dimension of it don't just disappear once you go gluten-free. you know, I think it's heavily and awfully... -
ARCHIVED How Can I Gain Weight?
jen-schall replied to lauderdalehawk44's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have finally been able to start gaining a tiny bit by doing the following things: -eating small amounts frequently. sometimes I feel like I'm eating all the time. this also prevents me from feeling sick/nauseous, too, which happens usually 2-3 hours after I eat... it's as if I've completely emptied by that point! -having good snack foods on hand... -
lots of beans and rice = complete protein! my husband is a vegan and actually manages to be really healthy, drop me an e-mail if you'd like to get in touch with him. he knows this stuff better than I do. he is not celiac disease (I am) but he knows about it. and I did have a friend in college who was celiac disease and vegan, so it's definitely possible...

Also, it's important to know that celiac disease can often cause (or trigger) depression, sometimes severely. Seeing a therapist at least a few times can be enormously helpful, and sometimes antidepressants make all the difference. You'd be amazed. I wish you the very best! It does get easier. It's great that you found this venue for support - that...

ARCHIVED How Long Have You Been Gf And How Do You Feel?
jen-schall replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
my blood tests (antibodies) showed up positive for probable celiac disease in late November, and my EGD tested positive in late December. after going gluten-free for several weeks, the improvement in how I felt was amazing, although I was still hugely fatigued. it just made such a difference not to be throwing up, or feeling like it, all the time, at every... -
ARCHIVED Recovering From A Gluten Accident
jen-schall replied to YankeeDB's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
yes, lots of water (or specially made beverages to help replace electrolytes if you've been throwing up or going to the bathroom all day!) and rest up. things like gluten-free crackers (glutano makes some good ones) or pretzels (glutino, Ener-G) kind of help my nausea if I have them around to nibble - that, or gluten-free cereals like corn flakes, things... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Know Of A Gf Soy Milk?
jen-schall posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
hi everyone, I used to drink soy milk all the time, and now I've discovered most brands I find have brown rice syrup in them (made from barley, right?) do any of you know of a gluten free soy millk, or any non-dairy milk alternative that is gluten-free? thanks so much! -
ARCHIVED GF Girlfriend
jen-schall replied to bignate's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't think you came off as sounding angry at all, just concerned. I just want to say good for you for being so supportive about this! so many people just go straight into denial and stay there. how wonderful that you two have this relationship. yay. it does sound like she is just the shock phase you mentioned. it -
ARCHIVED Hydrolyzed Soy Protein?
jen-schall replied to kerri124's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hydrolyzed soy protein is supposed to be fine; it's when it's hydrolyzed vegetable protein that there is gluten. if there is a 1-800 number on the bottle, call the company and ask. good luck! -
ARCHIVED Problems With Spouse Cause Of Celiac
jen-schall replied to whitelacegal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think even for the most supportive and understanding of people, living with a sick partner can be really tough: scary, sad, confusing - they might not understand, or think they do. They might think you're overacting or that you're too dependent. They might be totally inconsistent in behavior. I think it must be very strange to have a relationship where...
