  1. Hi there! Just wondering who might be from the Sacramento, CA area? I've seen a few posts from people in this area, & would like to know about shopping, dining out, etc for this area. And, maybe just to be able to chat with people who know this area in general! Thanks!
  2. Hi Holly, I too have neurological symptoms from gluten, more so than GI symptoms. I was actually (mis) diagnosed with fibromyalgia last December, because my pain, fatigue, & weakness were so severe, & the rheumatologist didn't know what else it could be. I found the gluten free diet completely by my own research, & after going gluten free in...
  3. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether the Target or Wal-Mart brand over-the-counter medications such as Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Ibuprofen, multi-vitamins, or calcium supplements are gluten free? I asked the pharmacist at Target recently, & she wasn't any help at all - said they didn't have a listing of gluten-free OTC meds, but I should be able...
  4. As I've written posts on here, a few people have mentioned that perhaps I have a "leaky gut". Could someone please tell me what that is, & how to tell if it's an issue or not? And, what do you do about it? Thanks!
  5. I just had to share a great moment with everyone. Today is my birthday, & I'd been feeling pretty low because I just went back on the gluten free diet 2 weeks ago. I know it's what I need for my health, but there's still that "mourning" period too. Anyway, my office celebrates everyone's birthdays as a group, with a homemade treat. I told...
  6. Thanks again everyone. Wow! I do appreciate all the information & advice. How do I know if I have a "leaky gut"?? Is this based on dietary responses alone? I guess I really do need to go casein free to see how I feel. Guess I was just waiting to see how I was doing once all the gluten was out of my system. But, since I tested positive for casein...
  7. Hi Lissa, You can go to their website at: Open Original Shared Link There, you can check out information about all the tests they provide, how much they cost, etc. I was even able to convince my insurance company (in the States) to pay for the test! I think it's definitely worth your effort to go through their testing, because they do the...
  8. Thanks for the support, everyone! I guess it's just hard for me to think about having food intolerances other than "just" gluten, which seems like so much how it is! Gluten though, is not my friend, & I know how much better I feel when I don't eat it, so I definitely DON'T cheat, so I don't suffer later! For those of you with casein...
  9. Anybody able to help with this??
  10. I've been gluten free (again) for 11 days now, after a grueling 6-week gluten challenge for blood tests & a biopsy. All blood tests & the biopsy were normal, but the Enterolab results showed positive for gluten as well as casein, & I'm double HLA-DQ1 genes. After a couple of days being gluten free again, my joint & muscle pain was going...
  11. I discovered the gluten free diet in January `07 after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. After a couple of weeks gluten free, I felt better than I have in years. As time went by, I learned about Celiac disease, & began to worry that's what I had. I went back on gluten in mid-June, as my primary doctor wanted to do the Prometheus blood tests. The...
  12. Where do you buy the bagels? I've been to Whole Foods & Trader Joe's, but havn't seen gluten free bagels anywhere. Don't the chicken tenders & the Teriyaki sauce have gluten in them? Good luck on your weight loss! I've lost 65# altogether, and now am trying to maintain. Keep in touch!
  13. Jody, Good for you for going back to it! I've struggled for so long, & finally met my goal & got Lifetime, but then I went on a "gluten challenge" for about 6 weeks in order to have blood tests & biopsy done for Celiac, & I've "enjoyed" eating gluten-filled things too much! I've gained back over 10 pounds in 2 months, so now I've got to...
  14. Any Weight Watchers members out there who are trying to lose/maintain weight through WW while also being gluten-free? I became a Lifetime member this past April, after losing 65#. I'm looking for fellow Weight-Watchers folks who can give some tips on planning meals that are gluten free while also counting points. Thanks!
  15. I got my results back from Enterolab, which showed I'm gluten-intolerant, as well as having the HLA-DQ1,1 gene (2 copies of it). Plus, it says I have the antibodies for casein too. I'm waiting for the results of my biopsy from Friday, to see if I'm "officially" celiac. My question is, since I have the antibodies to casein too, do I HAVE to go casein free...
  16. Thanks, Judy. I appreciate the kind words! I'll keep everyone posted on the biopsy results. Enterolab did say I'm positive for all the gluten tests, plus casein too. Also, I have 2 copies of the HLA-DQ1 genes, which explains all the neuro symptoms I've had. Martha
  17. I had my endoscopy & biopsy today and elected to do it without a sedative so I wouldn't be knocked out the rest of the day. Even with a double spray of the stuff in my throat, & using every relaxation technique I could think of, it was VERY difficult & traumatic to go through. But, I did make it through, & once I remembered to breathe more...
  18. I just got my results from Enterolab, & everything was positive. Plus, the gene tests showed I am positive for the HLA-DQ 1,1 genes (2 copies). (Specifically: HLA-DQB1, allele 1 06xx and HLA-DQB1, allele 2 06xx). RATS!!!!!!!!!! No wonder I've had so many severe neurological symptoms, rather than the more "typical" GI/tummy problems (which I've...
  19. How long does it take for the neuro damage to be permanent? I'm having the biopsy the day after tomorrow, & then plan on going gluten-free immediately afterwards. I've never met the GI, only had a phone consultation with him, & will meet him Friday morning in the GI lab for the EGD/biopsy. That's apparently how my medical group works (the GI doc...
  20. I was diagnosed in the past (10+ years ago) with an anxiety disorder & took antidepressants for years. I took myself off of them about 2 years ago, & while I had a good improvement just using cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques to help with the anxiety, I had the best improvement in my anxiety & depression after going gluten free in January...
  21. Wow - that's weird you should say that about your mom choking, because last night while eating dinner I choked a couple of times, but just figured I wasn't being careful or was tired or something. Maybe it's related to the other neuro stuff I have. I know these feelings will all pass once I'm off gluten again after my biopsy Friday, but right now it's sure...
  22. Hi Doll, Thanks so much for writing & for the support...it means a lot right now to hear from someone who can relate. That heaviness in the arms & legs is very scary, & yesterday I honestly wondered if I was having a stroke or something, but it just stayed the same & didn't get any worse. I haven't felt really disoriented, but the brain fog...
  23. After happily being gluten free for 5 months, I've now been back on the stuff for 6 weeks in order to get a definitive diagnosis of celiac or gluten intolerance. I go for an EDG/biopsy Friday 8/10. My neuro symptoms/fibromyalgia are so bad tonight I can barely tolerate them at all. I ate a donut today (with gluten, since I'm eating it right now), &...
  24. Yes, the doctor suggested I go on a gluten "trial" while being tested for celiac. I had been off gluten for about 5 months, because I'd learned people with fibromyalgia & arthritis respond well with elimination diets, so I stumbled upon "gluten free" living by accident. After I did more research, I learned about celiac, which I'd never heard of before...
  25. No horses at this time, but I love them! I hope to eventually live someplace where we can have some; in the meantime I have to enjoy them when others' have them! (I recently fell in love with a 2 month old Friesian filly; she was like a lapdog she was so sweet! But, that doesn't work in a subdivision!) Thanks for the info about needing to be careful around...
