  1. A good way to decide which cookbook is right for you is to check some out of your local library. If they don't carry them, they should be able to do an inter-library loan from another library system. Our local library charges a $1 for each book to do this. You can also get used books on Amazon or from Ebay. I have also made breads from the mixes and found...
  2. I haven't tried it, but I have seen recipes for crab cakes with cereals used instead of bread, so if you try the above suggestions which sound great and you still have problems you might try a crushed gluten-free cereal to help bind it together. DK
  3. With eating out you need to be pro-active and let the place you plan to eat at know your concerns. There are many posts as mentioned, on here about calling ahead, talking to the chef, and some people carry cards that tell about celiac disease. My granddaugther just had a wonderful experience at the Jungle (like Chuckie Cheese). Her aunt called ahead and...
  4. No, the contamination issue is a biggie. Things I have read include being grown in rotation with wheat in the same fields, trucked in the same containers, processed on the same machines. There are enough alternatives out there so that not consuming oats isn't an overwhelming problem. DK

    ARCHIVED Westcester Dentist?

Has anyone heard that if the gloves dentists use are powdered, it is possible that the powder contains gluten? I seem to have read it somewhere, but am unable to find the source. I agree about educating medical professionals etc. about celiac disease. My granddaughter who is 6 has had caps on her front teeth for over 2 years. This happened before she was...

    ARCHIVED Time Article

Open Original Shared Link is a link to Time online that starts out saying that if you get Celiac disease today it will be 2015 before a correct diagnosis occurs. It says it is from the July 19, 2004 issue of Time which I don't think has hit the stands yet. It is an eye catching phrase and hope it lets lots of attention. DK
  7. The Pepsi website states that their caramel coloring is from corn sugar, which I understand is true of caramel coloring that originates in the US. I agree with calling them. I try and send out emails to companies that don't clearly label their products and I am unsure about an ingredient. DK
  8. This is not a product I use, but doing a search on Google I came up with this website Open Original Shared Link that says "Crossed Grain" a magazine put out by the UK Coeliac group has an article on their products and that they are gluten free. (spring 2004). DK
  9. Here is a link to an article about the food labeling bill that says it is likely to be approved and signed into law by the President. Interesting article Open Original Shared Link I keep up on Celiac news by using Google and their news section typing in Celiac and sorting by date. You get everything from upcoming meetings published in local newspapers to...
  10. We buy the xanthan gum at Whole Foods. It is kind of pricey, but I keep it frozen until ready to use. DK
  11. By 2008 under the Food Labeling Law (the one in the House now) the FDA is supposed to issue new guidelines for gluten free. I hope that this is not where those guidelines are headed. I agree with all the above replies and think a distinction between gluten free and low gluten is an excellent idea. Even at that late date companies will still have an option...
  12. Constipation can be a symptom of celiac disease. The Medline Plus website which is from the NIH states that some have diarrhea, some constipation, some both and some neither. There are also posts to this website from people who have constipation. I was just talking to a doctor yesterday about celiac disease and told him my granddaughter has it and constipation...

    ARCHIVED Magazines?

Thanks for the links to the magazines. I ordered one issue of Living Without and may subscribe. DK
  14. I agree that many nutritionists and other professionals are not as helpful as they can be. The usual story of an uneducated doctor that wasted years looking in the wrong place happened in our family, including hinting that the parenting was at fault. Stanford in California has a wonderful program for Celiacs. They send each person home with tons of information...

ARCHIVED Looking For A Doc In San Jose, Ca

I agree that Standford is the place to go. If you are asking about a child, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford has a wonderful team of doctors. There is another post on here under doctors that recommends Jeffrey Aron in San Francisco. He was on Ronn Owens show on KGO 810 radio last week. He was answering call in questions. He mentioned Celiac...
  16. My vote is for the Food For Life breads, but then we haven't tried all brands. Both Whole Foods and Trader Joe's carry them. Whole Foods keep it in the refrigerator section which I like. My granddaughter likes the Brown Rice Bread toasted for breakfast. This brand is also carried by health food stores in our area. DK
  17. When they do the biopsy they often times give children medication that gives them amnesia so that they won't remember the procedure and be afraid of hospitals etc. Every professional we spoke with on the day of the procedure let us know that this would be happening, so if you weren't told about it, maybe your child wasn't given something like that. DK
  18. I love Whole Foods! I have never talked to a clerk that didn't know what I was talking about when I asked about a particular gluten-free item. They always recommend asking for a special purchase if they don't carry it. I like their produce also because there is such a variety of organic and often times it is cheaper than the local stores and produce stands...
  19. Here is a link to a site .Open Original Shared Link that answers your question. Mono diglycerides are fats that improve the consistency and give body to food like ice cream. They do have carriers (help in the process) in small amounts that up until 1996 didn't need to be listed on their labels and wheat is one of those. They are now required to list the...
  20. Yes, there is Irish in our background, along with many other European ancestors including Danish, English and German. I have heard that there are some who think JFK with all his medical problems may have been an undiagnosed Celiac. Italy is another country that has a high percentage of Celiacs. It may be due to their much more frequent testing for the...
  21. I do not know anything from personal experience about this doctor. If it were me, I would procede with caution, just from the little I have seen on the internet. Here is a site that talks about his detox diet Open Original Shared Link Perhaps you could check with the medical society in Marin. He has been in practice there since the 80's, so he must be doing...
  22. Looking for lunch ideas was one of the first things I looked for on this board. Have you tried the search section? I put in keyword lunch and looked under the parents etc. post section. There are some good ideas there. Envirokids makes a snack bar that is made from their gluten free cereals. They can be found at Whole Foods and some mainstream stores like...
  23. Kroger which is the parent company of Ralph's in CA has a toll free number 866-632-6900 where you can talk to a registered dietitian about gluten free products or any question you have about their products. I haven't tried it yet. It is listed on their website, Kroger.com under their health page. DK
  24. Check out the calendar section on this website and you will see food fairs, group meetings where you bring your own food with recipes to share, Culinary Institute demonstrations, gluten free tours etc. DK
  25. Kim, Was the statement "all leading experts" in the article you mentioned in your post? When I see the word all and leading in statements like that it raises a red flag for me. There is still disagreement about distilled vinegar. It brings to mind the discussion for years about hormone replacement therapy when millions of women took it and then came "the...
