  1. I'm Celiac, runs in the family so it wasn't really a surprise when it started, and since I knew about it I was diagnosed in about a week and therefore hopefully hadn't suffered too much damage like my mother and grandmother had. I don't at all look like I'm malnourished It would have been nice to lose atleast a few pounds. I am also lactose intolerant...
  2. I don't know of any specialists. They know about it at the GI place, but I had a lot of questions they couldn't answer. I was diagnosed by blood test by my dr, but I wanted to get an endoscopy, I just waited too long and it was negative. What kind of help are you looking for?
  3. I used to love fruit loops too. I think that the Disney Little Einsteins cereal tastes just like fruit loops. I like them better than the fruity pebbles because they stay crunchier in milk. There's also a cereal you can find in health food stores by Health Valley i think. Called Rice Crunchems. They are pretty similar to rice chex, just without the malt...
  4. While we are on the topic of breakfast cereal..... Almost all mainstream breakfast cereals have some sort of gluten in them. Read the labels carefully. Even the ones you think couldn't possibly have gluten in them, do.
  5. I would just call your dr's office and have them order the blood tests right away. That's what I did. They should be able to do that for you, especially if they understand what celiac is and that you are at risk because of family history. Just don't take no for an answer.
  6. They surprisingly have some fiber and are relatively low in sugar. I think they taste great too. the einstein one tastes like fruit loops. Although the sugar is high when you eat a whole box
  7. Albertsons is the only place I've found them in New Mexico.
  8. Not only are they grown in dedicated fields but I believe they are also tested thoroughly. I am also waiting for our store to carry them. I've asked several times.
  9. I was symptomatic for a week before i got the blood tests. My mother has celiac so I knew what to look for, didn't even see the dr. Just called her and told her to order the tests. They were all positive. I'll never know if they would have been positive the week before, but I had sudden onset of digestive symptoms. So hard to know how long they had been...
  10. I have to agree that stuff is awful. Another good one is the whole foods brand sandwich bread. Haven't actually tried making a sandwich with it but it makes pretty good toast. First time I tried it I didn't like it but it grows on you. I actually kind of look forward to having toast now. And ridgewalker, great name for your four year old son. ...
  11. Hey Mark, I had similar results. I got sick this summer. The regular intestinal stuff. Since my mother has celiac I knew what to look for, so after a week of not feeling better, i figured it wasn't just a virus and had my dr order the blood tests. I went off gluten right away, so it was possible I had minimal damage and may not have even built up a...
  12. Anyone have experience eating here? It's a chain restaurant that is mostly in the LA area, but they have on in Santa Fe and I'm wondering if anyone knows of any safe items here.
  13. We have plenty of places to shop. We have whole foods, and wild oats, and even cheaper is vitamin cottage which carries a lot of the same stuff. As for restaurants, most standard new mexican food is naturally gluten-free. Most things that are made with flour tortillas can easily be made with corn instead. Having said that, since i was just diagnosed a...
