I've found a suitable corn flake alternative at my local health food store. The brand is Nature's Path (naturespath.com). I don't mind them at all...and my DH loves them. Mind you, he is used to generic no name corn flakes so I guess he's not a real corn flake conisseur.

oh my watching that was slightly painful. i get why they tell people to read labels and stuff since it is partly about educating those who don't suffer from celiac but...do they have to be so cheesy? it would be really awesome to see a good and fun gluten-free cooking show on the food network. i am also a HUGE food channel fan! i wonder how someone goes...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Got A Chip Recipe?
megsbaby replied to cattriona's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Okay I am not sure if this is going to be what you are looking for but I have an awesome potato wedge recipe: Seasoning Mix (it makes alot that stores in the fridge) 2 tsp salt 2 tsp seasoning salt (use a gluten-free one, obviously!) 1 tsp pepper 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper 2 tsp paprika 2 tsp garlic powder 1/2 c grated parmesan cheese 1 T dried parsley... -
ARCHIVED Bread Crumbs
megsbaby replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use the Kinnikinnick brand Bread Crumbs. They are just like regular bread crumbs in texture and flavor. Finding these at my local health food store has been a life saver - I can make many of the old recipes gluten-free now! -
ARCHIVED Frozen Chicken Breast
megsbaby replied to moe-87's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just a thought...some frozen chicken breasts are labelled as 'seasoned'. I've read the ingredients on the box and it states 'natural flavor'. Is it possible that the natural flavor is derived from a gluten containing source??? -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Lasagna
megsbaby replied to bklyn's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yes I have cooked lasagna using gluten free (brown rice) lasagna noodles. My recipe makes a very large lasagna so I always have left overs for the next day to reheat. I also cut into portion sizes and freeze for an easy lunch to reheat in the microwave. The first time I made my recipe with gluten-free noodles I followed the package and precooked the noodles... -
ARCHIVED Help! Can't Stop Gaining...
megsbaby replied to Sesheta's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It's great you have begun an exercise routine. I noticed you mentioned that you miss lunch alot. Missing meals might add to the problem. Eating regularly throughout the day and NOT skipping any meals/snack times is important. I met with a dietician/nutritionist recently who really stressed the importance of this for all people. Eating breakfast, snack... -
ARCHIVED Minced Tvp As Fine Bread Crumbs?
megsbaby replied to megsbaby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The brand I have is Natures Fare Natural Foods (the store's own brand) but on the package it says Packed by Annie's Natural Foods. I know Natures Fare stores are located just in BC Canada so I don't know if Annie's Natural Foods supplies other stores with their TVP. -
ARCHIVED Minced Tvp As Fine Bread Crumbs?
megsbaby posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was at my local health food store and they didn't have any gluten-free bread crumbs. The lady assured me that using TVP Minced was going to achieve the same results as the gluten-free bread crumbs. It is made from Soya Flour. Reading the directions it says it absorbs its volume in liquid in its dry state. (1 c boiling water to 1 c TVP). I am nervous... -
ARCHIVED White Cheddar Rice Cakes
megsbaby replied to megsbaby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ok you rock! Thanks again. I had another different flavor of rice cakes so I called the company again and asked them about it. And again they said yes it was on their allergen list under gluten for corn gluten. Sigh, I already threw out the other rice cakes but I will keep these other ones around. It sure makes it confusing when the manufacturers list... -
ARCHIVED White Cheddar Rice Cakes
megsbaby replied to megsbaby's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ok thanks for the advice...I called the no name company and they checked their allergen list and guess what gluten is in this product! It is apparently listed on their allergen information as gluten (corn). Does that make ANY sense at all??? Yikes. I hear ya about the hydrogenated oil. If my DH has to choose between rice cakes and junky chips...I... -
ARCHIVED White Cheddar Rice Cakes
megsbaby posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Okay, so I have read the ingredients on this package about a million times but for some reason I keep having doubts that they are really gluten-free. I need another set of eyes on this please. They are white cheddar flavor rice cakes (no name brand). Here's the ingredients list: brown and white rice, corn, seasoning (white cheddar cheese powder, whey... -

ARCHIVED Am I Being Too Controlling?
megsbaby posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Here's some background...I just don't know if I am being oversensitive or ??? (sorry for the long post) My husband was diagnosed with DH a few years ago (just after we were married) but took him a while to get committed to a gluten-free diet and lifestyle. It has been about a month of gluten-free for him. We celebrated our anniversary with friends and... -
ARCHIVED Calling All Starburst Lovers!
megsbaby replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I guess I need to brush up on the label reading - thanks for settung me straight - my husband will be thrilled. -
My husband has DH and that is exactly how I would describe what he gets. They are very watery like blisters that break and then scab over. rebeccag - I got him to take a look at your pics and he thinks it only looks like the DH sores after the blisters break and scab over, but how you describe it starting out doesn't sound anything like DH, of course we...

ARCHIVED Calling All Starburst Lovers!
megsbaby replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I guess Starburst must be different in Canada. I checked the ingredients last week at the grocery store and it was still NOT gluten-free...too bad for us I guess. -
ARCHIVED Beers Other Than Redbridge?
megsbaby replied to Bread Belly's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For any Canadians...We were told by my brother who saw a commercial that Budweiser was making a gluten-free beer. We checked our specialty liquor store but so far haven't seen this anywhere. -
ARCHIVED Purchasing Flour In Bc
megsbaby replied to goldyjlox's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am also in BC. My DH has DH (lol - ok that just is confusing...) Our household has been gluten free about a month now - after a firm talking to from a dietician that got my husband on the gluten-free lifestyle bandwagon. I am from the Okanagan and we shop at Simply Delicious, Natures Fare, Safeway and Superstore. All these stores carry gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Chicken Broth....
megsbaby replied to bfarnsworth0709's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
In Canada, the no name (Superstore, Extra Foods, etc) brand regular chicken and beef broth in the tetra-boxes have wheat in them. However, according to the label, the less sodium versions of both chicken and beef broth don't seem to have wheat/gluten in the ingredients.
