  1. As the result of a heart attack, I had 4 stents put into my heart last Monday. Since being in the hospital, I have had serious gluten reactions...heightened anxiety/aggressiveness, flue like symptoms w/ 2=3 degree temp, very achy, stomach very upset, and naturally, watery diarrhea 4-5 times a day. None of the "doctors" seem to have heard of Celiac disease...
  2. I recently tried a wheat free/gluten free/casein free rice spaghetti under the "Mrs. Leeper's" brand (American Italian Pasta Company of Kansas City, MO)(www.aipc.com), and it was the best that I have tried. It wasn't mushy as most rice spaghetti's are. They also make other types of pasta such as elbow mac, but I haven't tried them yet. This was purchased...
  3. I eat "Tropical Chips", which are made from plantains....they are 100% natural and no preservatives (so it says on the package). Plantains look like bananas, but have to be cooked before eating. The ingredients list says that they are cooked in sunflower oil and/or rice bran oil and/or corn oil. They are available in "regular" stores.
  4. Recently I was "glutenized", probably from cross contamination. In the process of trying to track down the culprit I contacted Motts re their "Mauna La'i" drink. Their response was that all of their products are gluten-free EXCEPT Mr & Mrs T Pina Colada and Clamate. Hope this helps.
  5. I lost about 10 lbs after I started on a gluten-free regimen. Strangely, during the two years when I was suffering from really bad "D", I did not lose weight. I believe that most of the loss was fat. Re self diagnosis....I didn't use to believe that this was a good idea, but during my two years of " living in the bathroom", I sought help from four doctor...
  6. The 'Progresso" brand of soup has several varieties that are gluten free, for example "Creamy Chicken w/ Wild Rice". They are very good about listing all ingredients, including soy and milk products, in large letters at the end of the ingredients list.
  7. Minibabe....I also cannot take a deep breath w/o the feeling that my throat is closing up, but....I have pulmonary fibrosis. PF is listed as a disease probably associated with celiac disease. My celiac problemssss were exposed after I started taking prednisone and actimmune for the PF. So, the reason for my post is to suggest that if you are also having...
  8. Stick with the gluten-free diet....I had "relapses" several times during the first few weeks after going on a gluten-free diet, and I also had been very careful not to ingest any gluten. It took about a 3 - 4 weeks before I was confident that the diarrhea portion of my problem had been resolved.
  9. Please don't "freak out". The good news is that you already have the answer to your problem, and the solution is simply a gluten-free diet. No medicine side effects to deal with! My celiac disease was missed by 5 (five) doctors....thanks to forums like this, I self diagnosed, and my problems are resolving.
  10. I don't remember where I read the article, but in answer to "after damage by gluten/milk, how long before the villi and microvilli grow back?", the answer was "6 months to a year". In my personal case, the "D" persisted for at least a month, and then gradually got better. It all depends on how much damage was done, and probably also what triggered the...
  11. ADevoto....I agree with Deb. While I don't have any children living with me now, if my children had ever exhibited the symptoms that you mention, I would certainly have them go gluten-free for a couple of weeks. The symptoms that you mention are all listed as gluten reactions. The tests can be false neg or pos. You won't be endangering your children on...
  12. I live in central Florida, and there are several stores in the Orlando area that have a lot of gluten-free products. Most of the chain grocery stores do not contain many gluten-free products. However, check Open Original Shared Link for a list of "normal" food products that all grocery stores stock that are gluten-free. For example, some Progresso brand...
  13. Don't forget, ice is also suspect. This can be ice in drinks, or ice cooling foods, or anything that it has touched.
  14. Cortex.... By now you must realize that tooooo many people that suffer from celiac have found relief by self diagnosis. Everyone recognizes that this can be dangerous. However, I personally spent big bucks on lab tests and "specialists", and none of them ever came close to a diagnosis of celiac. You could do all of us a great favor, since most doctors...
  15. Quaker rice cakes (apple flavor) caused me to have SEVERE intestinal reaction which lasted for ten days.
  16. I switched from the Deland millet bread to a brown rice bread. Then I made a BIG mistake and tried (one slice) of the New Harvest bake shop Millet bread with Cranberry & Walnuts......I'm not allergic to cranberries or walnuts, but the one slice of this bread really messed up my stomach for several days. I therefore assume that there is cross contamination...
  17. Interesting subject...I'm a male, and have been gluten-free since March 2004 (except for 2 cross contaminations). For the past month, I have noticed that if I remain seated w/o moving for an extended period of time, like when I'm reading your posts, then I start to feel dizzy. Over a year ago, I was taking prednisone, which caused me to have diabetes, and...
  18. Yep, I agree....Quaker apple flavor rice cakes did a real number on my intestines for about 10 days.
  19. I too have been wondering about withdrawal symptoms. I have been gluten-free since March 2004, (except two accidents which took about 10 days each to resolve). I still have hip pain over the night and early morning, but not nearly as bad as when I was eating wheat. The diarrhea has resolved (except for the two accidents), a couple of days ago I noticed...
  20. Re gluten in medications, I have to take hydrocodone due to pain caused by bone spurs in my neck, and pain/breathing problems associated with pulmonary fibrosis. I don't have any celiac problem with the "Mallinckro" brand. I do have to be careful when ordering medication for high blood pressure. The "Mylan", and "Eon Labs" brands of Enalapril are gluten...
  21. Since going on a gluten-free diet, I now have vertical ridges on my fingernails, but can't remember if they were there before.
  22. Almost immediately after I went on a gluten-free diet, I started getting these nickel sized red areas on my stomach and thighs. They don't itch.
  23. Since being gluten-free for the past 4 months, and after much searching, I finally found "Nature's Path" organic corn flakes. They are marked as gluten-free on the box, and I have not had any problem with them. The "Honey'd" variety is about $2.00 a box cheaper (cheaper is good) than the regular brand, and they don't taste overly sweet. I have only seen...
  24. It is interesting to me to read about the emotional effects of celiac for teenagers. I started a gluten-free diet about 90 days ago, and have also noted that I have become very short tempered, so it's not just a teenager thingy. The last time I was a teenager was 50 some years ago. I don't think that I am depressed, but like one of the other posters, I...
  25. I have celiac disease and also take medication for high blood pressure. When I first went on a gluten-free diet, I was taking Cozaar and was told by Merck Co that this contained gluten. They also told me that Enalapril manufactured by Mylan or Eon Labs does not contain gluten. I am taking Enalapril manufactured by Mylan, and it does not cause me a problem...
