I think the total IGA is to rule out IGA deficiency.

ARCHIVED I Am Totally Confused Now!
GEF replied to KC33's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know... I'm sure some here could explain your lack of symptoms in relation to celiac... I guess it all depends on what you eat, how much of it and how sensitive you are. I'm curious though, has your doctor ruled out IBD (inflamatory bowel disease).. .ie: Crohn's, etc? Those with IBD experience flare-ups and can go for time with / without symptoms... -

KC, that's all I had for a year or so, then the IGA showed up. Yes, there are other conditions that can cause the IGG elevation, but the important thing is to not be disuaded to pursue an answer.... you are obviously experiencing symtoms and need an answer to that. My next step is some more tests, my wedding (at which I've already bought a very expensive... -

ARCHIVED Intolerance Can Lead To Full-blown Celiac?
GEF replied to GEF's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had a small bowel biopsy a year ago when only my IGG was positive... the biopsy came back normal. My tTg is negative, but it's the Anti-reticulin that's borderline. I really don't know much about what that indicates. I had a colonoscopy last month and everything was normal. I'm kinda glad the IGA showed up this time, as that gives a little more direction... -
ARCHIVED Intolerance Can Lead To Full-blown Celiac?
GEF replied to GEF's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My family has been less than supportive when it comes to celiac and my non-diagnosis and my stepmom thinks I'm obsessing. Um... anyone would be obsessing if they had GI issues for 5 years with no answer in my opinion... but, I'm not obsessing, I'm being proactive about my health. If I changed my diet on meer antibodies without a diagnosis, they'd think... -
Does anyone have an issue with elevated indirect bilirubin along with celiac / gluten intolerance? (This is sometimes referred to as Gilbert's syndrome). I believe that intestinal permeability (that seems to be my word of the week) plays quite a role. Just wondering. Gretchen

It doesn't take that much effort to read something about IBS...look at how much the drug companies have been promoting it... it's everywhere! It's a real shame that there are so many who believe it's a proper diagnosis and give up finding the real cause to their health problem. I'm sorry, but anyone with GI issues knows it's not normal and knows it's not...

Rose, I have a similar story. My IGG was the only test positive out of my series.. ... well, until recently. Even so, it revealed only slight positive on my IGA. I've done my researching on conditions that can cause an elevated IGG, as that's primarily what I have and I'm taking the route of ruling out various other autoimmune disorders and IBD (like...

ARCHIVED Those Of You That Suffer With Diarrhea
GEF replied to BamBam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I didn't know that calcium had that effect, but I take Caltrate with Vit. D because I'm lactose intolerant and am afraid I don't get enough calcium through my diet. I like the chewables and I have realized that taking them does help with the "D" issue... didn't know it was the calcium though! Thank you for the info Gretchen -
ARCHIVED Celiac Or Gluten Intolerant: Does It Matter?
GEF replied to Judithg's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It was truly an assumption on my part... due mostly to the non-concern of doctors I've visited. It seems that many are more concerned about a patient having to make the strict dietary change over a condition that hasn't been diagnosed 100%, than they are about the effects of non-treatment. -

Richard, I'm curious as well... I just posted that question. -
ARCHIVED Intolerance Can Lead To Full-blown Celiac?
GEF posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've heard it mentioned that through time gluten intolerance (if no dietary changes are made) can lead to full-blown celiac... is that true??? And in the possible case that the presence of antibodies in someone's blood is due to an intestinal permeablity issue (from another disorder), is is still just as important and necessary to go gluten-free? ... what... -
ARCHIVED I Am Totally Confused Now!
GEF replied to KC33's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Truly the endoscopy was A LOT (at least for me) easier than the colonoscopy... there wasn't much prep and you really don't remember much from the procedure. I know it's difficult when you don't have an answer to why you're symptomatic, but just keep asking your doctor. It's better to rule it in/out than to wonder and possibly endanger yourself. For me... -
Jill, I'm glad that your procedure went well! I must say, your recount of the endoscopy was quite humorous and I quite enjoyed reading it... perhaps because it brings back those foggy memories of my own! Did they use that "V" drug? Good that you got it in writing because the amnesia will take whatever memories you have left. I hope that they find...

Carrie, I'd see your doctor, to be on the safe side. Things like gallstones aren't uncommon after a pregnancy. Hope you feel better soon. Gretchen -
ARCHIVED What Do You Think Of These Results?
GEF replied to GEF's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thank you, Nin I have heard of Gilbert's and from what I've read it's not harmful.. which is good. The doctor is going to check my small intestines through an x-ray, and hopefully find an answer to why I'm symptomatic. I've read that if you have increased intestinal permeability, that indirect bilirubin can be elevated and IGG's and other things can... -
ARCHIVED Crohns Disease And Celiacs
GEF replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have also heard that same thing about the IGG's. I think mainly because of increased intestinal permeability that accompanies crohn's. I have also heard that some with Crohn's benefit greatly by going on a gluten-free diet. So, I think there is some relationship there, outside of being autoimmune-related. Are your crohn's symtoms very similar to those... -
ARCHIVED Thoughts On My Test Results And Symptoms?
GEF replied to PaulW's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Paul, I'm in the same boat as you. My IGG was 40 (positive), my IGA was 23 (I think that's borderline). Through all of my tests, the doctor is looking for something other than celiac, since my tests point mainly to the IGG's. There are other conditions, (intolerance included) that can cause an elevation in only the IGG's as well as I've heard that it... -
ARCHIVED What Do You Think Of These Results?
GEF posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was hoping for some advice on these results. I just got the exact #'s today: IGA: 23 IGG: 40 IGA Ttg: Negative (no value was given) Anti-reticulan IGG antibody: 1/20 (titre) which is borderline. Biopsy is normal, colonoscopy normal. And this elevated indirect bilirubin keeps showing up. About 4 years ago showed up at 1.2, then 1.5, now the... -
ARCHIVED Very Weird, Rheumatoid Or Celiac?
GEF replied to Staceyj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Speaking of Lupus (since my great grandmother died of it), I recently had the ANA blood test and I think it was negative. That's good If you have it in your family, it's always good to test it and rule it in/out. Stacie, I know we've talked about this I just had no info yet. It's been a while from my last post since I've had to wait for all the results... -
ARCHIVED Is There A Jra/celiac Connection?
GEF replied to HeidiLeigh29's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
"ANA stands for Antinuclear Antibody. This literally means 'substance against the cell nucleus'. The nucleus is the 'headquarters' of the living cell, therefore the ANA can damage or destroy cells & tissues. 95%-98% of patients with SLE (lupus) will have a positive ANA test, but the majority of people with a positive ANA test do not have SLE. A positive... -
ARCHIVED Cd And Irritable Bowel Syndrome
GEF replied to glutima's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yeap, that's where I am... I gave up (for a year) after the IBS diagnosis and recently found a new GI practice. What's amazing to me is how eager doctors are to give up testing further and that's why I think we owe it to ourselves to keep searching out the root of our symptoms. This time I saw a PA and I really like her since she's eager to get the root... -
About the rib pain, and this isn't much related to GI, but if the pain you are experiencing is in the same spot all of the time and it seems to hurt for a long period of time, then stops... it could be a broken cartilage rib. That's what happened to me.. have 5-7 broken and they'd never show up on the x-ray because they're not bones. Some were just hairlines...
