ARCHIVED Dr, Oz's Show On Celiac Disease W/eliazabeth Hasselbeck
USF1970 posted a topic in Publications & Publicity
I am furious after watching a show about Celiac Disease on Dr. Oz. He greatly misled his audience. He implied that one can lose weight on a gluten-free diet, that even though Celiac Disease causes malabsorption, people w/celiac disease are usually overweight and he led his audience believe that African Americans are likely to have celiac disease. He never... -

At the first of the year I posted that after 12 years of being my doc's 'most compliant celiac disease patient' I was losing weight and as a result of an endoscope my villa was once again flattened/blunted. I was having mild stomach discomfort and I blamed it on cc w/such items as BRM hot rice cereal and UDI bread. Now that I'm lactose free, I can once again...

I haven't had time to read all of the replies posted but wanted to add my experience. I fell three times in one year - once b/c my shoes were too big (I think), and another b/c I missed the curb but the third was a doozy. I was taking a walk on NYE (certainly alcohol wasn't involved), I had good shoes on, it was daylight and not for a minute did i feel...

ARCHIVED Super Sensitive And Lactose Intolerant.....lots Of Questions
USF1970 replied to USF1970's topic in Super Sensitive People
From all of the replies I've received (and I greatly appreciate all tips), I'm determining that I will be able to eat yogurt and 'hard' cheese (what I call 'bar' cheese). Is that correct? I tried the soy yogurt and I was able to eat it but yuck; held my nose during most of it. Same w/almond milk......I drank it but.....trying rice milk next. Again, thanks... -
ARCHIVED Super Sensitive And Lactose Intolerant.....lots Of Questions
USF1970 replied to USF1970's topic in Super Sensitive People
Yes, we have Fresh Market here in Savannah and I agree...haven't found them very helpful. Is it WF's that carries the pizza you recommmend? There's a huge sign that says a big bldg. has been rented and a couple of newspaper articles about Whole Foods coming to town - everyone is conjecturing that this is going to be where WF lands. Hope so.....it will... -
ARCHIVED Super Sensitive And Lactose Intolerant.....lots Of Questions
USF1970 replied to USF1970's topic in Super Sensitive People
No Whole Foods yet in Savannah but there is a STRONG rumor that they are coming......PLEASE LORD. In the meantime, I'll have to shop on the Internet. What did us SS Celiacs do before the Internet.........what did NORMAL Celiacs do before the internet???? Thanks so much for your tips; they are very helpful. Whole Foodless in Savannah, GA but there's... -
And so it goes...no more Tinkyada pasta for me and at your suggestion, I asked my doc about dairy products. I am now off dairy until my genetic tests come back. Oh joy...best of luck to you. At least I can still have caffeine, sugar and alcohol........ some very small pleasures.

Oh, and one more question please. Will the lactaid 'pills' work - do no more damage to my villi? -
ARCHIVED Super Sensitive And Lactose Intolerant.....lots Of Questions
USF1970 posted a topic in Super Sensitive People
Hi super-sensitive gluten friends, I have now been taken off lactose until my genetic tests come back. Now I'm really wondering what to eat. I eat a LOT of yogurt, cheese and cottage cheese. I understand that soy cheese is really yucky. What do y'all eat for snacks? I don't LOVE yogurt but it's easy, takes the edge off my hunger and I THOUGHT was good... -
ARCHIVED How To Cope Better With Being A Super Sensitive
USF1970 replied to YoloGx's topic in Super Sensitive People
I've just been diagnosed as a 'super-sensitive' Celiac (I hope - my doctor, up to this point, thought I had refractory sprue). But since I've eliminated Udi, BRM and Glutino products, I have gained almost 5 lbs. He was very happy to see that. However, he is testing me for lactose intolerance (I eat a LOT of dairy). What next? Soon I'll be eating nothing... -
I've become super-sensitive and have been keeping a food journal. Recently, I ate Tinkyada pasta and had a severe case of diarrhea. So, I'm crossing Tinkyada off my list......MUCH to my dismay and sorrow.

ARCHIVED Vitamin A Deficiency?
USF1970 replied to Coolclimates's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I too have just been diagnosed w/Vit. A deficiency. It's manifested in my eyes.......dry, itchy and red. My ophthalmologist had to 'go to the books' to determine the cause. He got suspicious when I told him that I wondered if my glaucoma eyedrops contained gluten. Don't know if he would have DXd w/o me mentioning that. At any rate, heading back to my... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease To Refractory Sprue
USF1970 replied to USF1970's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sometimes I wish I were more symptomatic to traces to gluten. Before gluten-free, I didn't realize I was symptomatic - the only symptoms I had was indigestion (extreme to the point of nausea only infrequently)and constipation. Now, after being gluten-free for over 12 years, I am very symptomatic if I accidentally (realizing after the fact) that I've ingested... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease To Refractory Sprue
USF1970 replied to USF1970's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks Lucky 28 for the suggestion but I've just gone down that road. Just an FYI, Physician's Formula is the only cosmetic line I can find that states flatly that all their products are gluten free. Others mealy-mouth around stating that if gluten is present, it would be so stated. Something is really bothering my eyes (the product states it's gluten... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease To Refractory Sprue
USF1970 replied to USF1970's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That's right 'Warrior Princess' - absolutely no offense taken by various replies. Just restating my frustrations, just venting, that's all. The irony here is I feel perfectly fine other than the occasional slight indigestion previously stated. I can't tell all of you all how helpful your support is b/c NO ONE, not even my daughter, totally understands.... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease To Refractory Sprue
USF1970 replied to USF1970's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just now seeing these posts........don't know why. But as a statement of fact, I have never, EVER been lax on this diet. Savannah's not a huge city but it's not tiny either and my doc (very well respected in our community) calls me his most compliant celiac patient. And now this........and so it goes. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease To Refractory Sprue

ALSO.....I've also checked all of my meds and cosmetics.....no gluten. And so it goes. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease To Refractory Sprue
USF1970 replied to USF1970's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
WOW.....I've not seen any of these posts.....I don't know why. It wasn't until I did a search on MY search term, that I found your replies (I am a librarian after all)!!!! I have been VERY careful w/my diet although I have continued to eat processed food on occasion. I have found that the following products cause me problems and by problems I mean very... -
ARCHIVED Refractory Sprue
USF1970 replied to clee123's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That's not at all like my numerous visits to the Mayo in Jax. Sometimes I had to wait but my only gripe was moving appts. w/o enough advanced notice. As far as I know, I haven't had blood work done in a long while. I guess that will be my doc's next step. Can't remember if you were the one who asked but yes, up till now, my endoscopes have come back very... -
ARCHIVED Refractory Sprue
USF1970 replied to clee123's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Coconut oil.....hmmmmmmm. I'll have to try that out. We have an excellent natural food store in town; I'm sure Peter will know about it. Regarding steroids - I was on a strong round of them when I had a compression fracture in my spine when I was first identified as having osteoporosis. Entocort is no where near as toxic as Prednisone but it does cause... -
ARCHIVED Refractory Sprue
USF1970 replied to clee123's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, I've been checked for parasites. It took my doctor more than two years before he was able to diagnose me w/microsopic colitis. I've been on Entocort since then. I hate the bruising it causes on my arms and I'm sure it's not helping my osteoporosis. My doctor mentioned a probiotic during my last visit so I'll ask about that when I see him again. ...
