ARCHIVED Blood Test Results Show No Celiac In Delayed-Growth Child
nicolebeth replied to nicolebeth's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was tested in both 2007 and in fall 2010. The first time, I was gluten-free. The doc was the local expert, and said that my choices (with obviously negative tests) were to continue on the diet if I felt better, or to eat gluten and have an endoscopy. In Fall 2010, I got tested when the hives started. I'd been eating gluten-heavy for a month at that point... -

The neuro connection sounds bad--thanks for the information. I changed my own diet because of GI issues, IBS (diagnosed at age 20; I'm 40 now), hypothyroidism that is supposedly not autoimmune but came after my first pregnancy in 2002 and never left, a few bouts with chronic hives (one lasting a year), but negative blood tests for celiac--neg tTG and EMA... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Results Show No Celiac In Delayed-Growth Child

Would delayed growth occur from gluten intolerance? I'm asking because if he starts to grow on a gluten-free diet, would that mean celiac? We are investigating the doctor options today, but are having him go to school gluten-free today. If we find somebody (good!!), we'll give him gluten for dinner and start the process again. While we're inclined to go... -

Yes, we're also concerned that another endoscopy wouldn't show anything definitive either. And, then, we'd be left wondering: is it celiac? or is there something else causing his growth delay? Thank you for the good wishes! -

I meant to mention that his TSH was normal. I know if it's an autoimmune thyroid condition there are different tests, but at least that one was normal. Good luck to all of you, and thank you! -

The question is, how do we successfully rule out celiac? It seems like doing a gluten-free trial is going to be necessary to figure this out more-or-less conclusively. Or, do we wait for an endoscopy? Our son would rather go gluten-free than have the test again, but I suppose we really shouldn't rely solely on the preferences of a 7yo. The pediatricians... -

Is there someone else who could look at our kid and find out whether it's something else besides celiac? With celiac in the family, that's always been what we've thought. But, is there a doctor out there who would know what to do with the information besides just want us to wait and see? Which we're not doing anymore. Btw, the kid is on board with gluten... -

His response was to make us feel stupid for insisting upon unnecessary tests. "He's not that small. His GI problems aren't that bad. He's just finding his curve, and if he doesn't find his curve, go to endocrinology." -

There was an endoscopy doctor (I believe an attending), separate from the GI docs (we had an attending an a resident). And, as I said, I may just have photos that aren't representative of the actual biopsy. There was someone above the attending when we went to our follow-up; he was the one who said he'd "never" have thought it was celiac. -

Wow, I had no idea. I barely passed Anatomy & Physiology back in H.S. I also wouldn't have thought to question this particular facility; amazing that they had him under all that time and didn't even take the right samples! So frustrating. Thank you for the information. I suppose it's possible these are just the images they provided us and not the places... -

Update: doctor also ordered an IgG and an IgM. She noted that his IgA normalized in 2010 with a second blood test (it was 52, with a range of 50-150--that was done in a different lab from the recent test and the first test). His IgG in September 2010 was 566 (600-1500). The ped also thinks that the liver enzyme function doesn't have the correct reference... -

I'm just sorry we didn't take him gluten-free two years ago. It was hard when Children's categorically denied he could have it as the endoscopy was normal. They said if he continues not to grow, go see endocrinology. (He grew just enough from age 5-6, so we thought ok, we're seeing things that aren't there.) We also had tons of follow-up immunology bloodwork... -

Thank you all very much. We are inclined towards putting him on the gluten-free diet. (I'm eating that way anyway, as paleo/primal seems to help me.) Today, I'm going to ask his pediatrician what else she needs to rule out--given the liver function tests and the ESR. But, regardless, I also will ask her to diagnosis him with presumed celiac so we have something... -

I've written in before (I don't know how to link to prior posts). In brief, my son was tested at age five--bloodwork and endoscopy were normal, except for a low total IgA. My son stopped growing sufficiently again. He's crossing percentiles, and hasn't gained weight between June and now, hasn't grown a shoe size in a year, and is in the 3rd percentile... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests

He just doesn't go to the doc that often, fortunately, so it hasn't been an issue. But, he's certainly considering, now, though would like to try to have at least one further conversation with him about this. -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests
nicolebeth replied to nicolebeth's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Good points. I know that it doesn't make any sense to me why the PCP wants to limit the testing. He is planning to be rechecked every few years. His parents may go in as well; they know that, with two kids confirmed, it probably came from one of them. Now, I checked over the health records from three years ago, and on the gliadin AB, my husband got a ... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests

Thank you. I've never met the doctor, myself. So, it's hard for me to say. (I go somewhere else!) I've tried to sell him on the idea of moving to where I am, but he hasn't done it yet. Perhaps this is the impetus he needs. My PCP would at least order the EMA. When I had the tests (negative) in fall 2010, the DGP had just come out so I could see why she didn... -
Hello- Husband had bloodwork in 2009, which was negative. Now that a second sibling of his has been diagnosed with celiac, he decided he should repeat the bloodwork, just to be on the safe side. Anyway, husband's PCP will order only the TtG and Total IgA (along with a complete blood count, including iron workup). The PCP has consulted a GI doc, and he...

ARCHIVED Chronic Hacking Cough
nicolebeth replied to suztodd's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Is it possible that it's whooping cough? Fully vaccinated kids are getting it (and it doesn't always have a whoop). Coughing for that long at night, and being tired sound like it could be it. Our daughter had about four months of coughing when she was in preschool. She'd been exposed to another kid who'd had antibiotics for whooping cough (but still had the... -

ARCHIVED Extended Breastfeeding & Celiac Diagnosis
nicolebeth replied to nicolebeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Definitely. I think that's true for just about everything--there are very few situations (such as chemotherapy, radioactive iodine, and lithium) that are incompatible with breastfeeding. With gluten, the mom can go gluten-free if it's in the family to try to forestall the celiac diagnosis. I'm not sure anyone has looked at whether extended breastfeeding continues... -
ARCHIVED Extended Breastfeeding & Celiac Diagnosis
nicolebeth replied to nicolebeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Good question. I was not gluten free--there was no reason to think I should be at the time. (There were pockets of time when was I gluten-free as I've suspected that I have some level of gluten intolerance--but it never seemed to stick, though it has for the last three months, not that it's relevant to your question!) So, I know that my son was exposed... -
ARCHIVED Extended Breastfeeding & Celiac Diagnosis
nicolebeth replied to nicolebeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thank you, this is what I was thinking, too, about the protective effects of breastmilk. I've read the article that breastfeeding can delay the onset of celiac disease (or perhaps prevent it), but I wasn't sure if that was still the case after solid food introduction (though, I suppose even with a very young baby, there is still exposure via the milk). Also... -
ARCHIVED Extended Breastfeeding & Celiac Diagnosis
nicolebeth replied to nicolebeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks for responding--I don't know too many people who have kids with food issues who've breastfed that long. He spit up a lot (projectile vomiting), which could have been due to oversupply. He also had five loose bowel movements a day until at least 18 months (or longer), possibly. My son's tests were normal, but I guess low IgA would affect the tTG... -
ARCHIVED Extended Breastfeeding & Celiac Diagnosis
nicolebeth replied to nicolebeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks for the story about your sons. I thought my son would be unwilling to be gluten-free, but he actually is willing. If blood work is again normal, we will try it. (My 10yo is constipated, too; we've avoided miralax, barely. All her tests were normal as well. It's good to be normal! But, we just don't know what causes the constipation. Our current thinking...
