  1. We finally found a GI who believes in non-celiac gluten intolerance. (We think my son has undiagnosable celiac.) The school accepted our word for it (it is an elementary, not a preschool). Have you tried tried talking to them? We don't know if there's a problem with contact gluten or not. (The biggest problem is birthday treats because parents will say, ...
  2. I really hope your son doesn't need a feeding tube! I hope they can figure things out before then. This must be such a stressful time. I hope that by figuring out your own issues, it helps with your kids. Dentists do blame breastfeeding, it's true. They sometimes conflate nighttime nursing with nighttime formula-feeding. I would trust kellymom over any...
  3. As I mentioned above, my son's GI doc said the breastfeeding was the best thing I could have done for my son. Some kids are susceptible to dental caries; it has nothing to do with breastfeeding. Some tout grassfed butter as something children with this issue should eat (that would also be high in fat, which is good). Have you investigated celiac or non-celiac...
  4. Thank you for your response. We went through testing with DS1 that finally led to a GI who believes in non-celiac gluten intolerance. (We believe our son actually has celiac, due to the family history, but his blood work won't show it, and the scope he had three years ago wasn't comprehensive enough.) The school, fortunately, has accepted our word for it...
  5. Thank you; that is helpful to know.
  6. Thank you for your response. Yes, we would like to know, if possible. (We couldn't know with DS1 because of low IgA & IgG.) Feeding gluten every day might be a pain, but is doable. (Does a 3yo really need three slices of bread/day for six weeks? Or is a few crackers a day enough?)
  7. If it makes you feel any better, our GI told me that the extended breastfeeding was the best thing I could have done for my son (not FTT; he fell off his curve, and kept dropping between ages 3 and 7). Good luck to you! I hope he's feeling better soon, and you figure everything out!
  8. Celiac is in the family--DH's brother, sister, probably his father, and DS1 is presumed celiac (I've posted before...don't know how to link...he isn't growing yet, but feels MUCH better, and is 100% on board. Except for the not growing part...) Anyway, my almost 3yo (DS2) has: eczema (like DS1 did, though definitely not as bad), GI issues (constipation...
  9. Thank you for this thread. Since taking our son gluten-free in October, he hasn't grown (well, he's still under the 5th percentile for height and weight, growing at the bare minimum to maintain that). His older sibling at least has never shown these issues. Our son is starting to get upset about this. He feels better gluten-free, and I don't think will stray...
  10. I personally eat butter just fine. The problem is when I start eating more than just a very little cheese. I think that casein is worse in things like milk and cheese, and is minimal in butter (a fat).
  11. I believe that I'm actually casein intolerant. So, lactose levels don't matter. But, I seem to tolerate a little goat cheese and feta. But, if I try to push it, I'll feel unwell. (Cow's milk products seem to cause my skin to break out, too.) I used to think that I tolerated goat and sheep products better (and I probably do), but I seem less and less able...
  12. Definitely keep nursing! There is absolutely no reason to pump and dump. Let's say your baby is also gluten intolerant. Nursing the absolute best thing for him. You are doing a great thing to protect his gut, potentially, from developing the same issues. And, if he does, you are giving him the most digestible food there is. And, if it turns out you actually...
  13. According to wikipedia it's yeast, not wheat, but I would still ask for the package insert before even considering it as there could be different versions: Open Original Shared Link I also heard that people with celiac don't make sufficient antibodies to Hep B (but that might be undiagnosed celiac in someone still eating wheat). Here's an article about...
  14. That's wonderful! We're doing a trial with our 7yo right now, and aside from feeling better physically, I see many emotional things you're mentioning. He was just unhappy, pale, on edge. He looks so much better now (much more relaxed and calm). It must be so hard for these little kids to deal with something that has been so constantly bothering them...
  15. Supposedly, Kosher Valley was bought by Empire Kosher...I've emailed them several times, and received no response on whether they're gluten-free. They contain potato starch (rather than a wheat product), but also contain the ubiquitous "natural flavors". If anyone has any information on this, I would appreciate it. My son loves these. Thank you.
  16. He doesn't take Vitamin D; I've bothered him about that in the past, especially during the winter. He will call in today if there's no D3 result--perhaps it's just taking longer.
  17. Thank you. My husband was just happy to get the tests run, finally; this doc was fairly unwilling to do anything until he actually met with him. In looking more closely at the tests, unless they haven't all come back yet, they actually did a D2 not the D3. So, if he does end up needing the other Vitamin D test, then we will have research from Google ready...
  18. My husband has two siblings with celiac. Our son (as discussed elsewhere here!) has presumed celiac/non-celiac gluten intolerance. Anyway, my husband recently had the tests rerun (he was negative three years ago). The tTG IgA is still negative: result was 4 and it should be less than 20. (Three years ago, he was just told that he was less than 20.) His...
  19. Thank you, everyone. We will try to mellow out--well, I will (my husband couldn't be any more mellow). It turns out that the nutritionist decided our son should be treated as having celiac after hearing the family history, the slow growth, the minor symptoms after having the licorice, and our willingness to have started the gluten-free diet on our own...
  20. Thank you! We did notice that our son, while having no direct complaints, seemed to be constipated (or, at least stopped up) again yesterday. We are pretty sure he actually has celiac, but were hopeful this wouldn't be too much of a setback. Thanks again for the reassurance!
  21. Hi, everyone. We decided to take our son (7) gluten-free on October 3. Anyway, until yesterday, we feel pretty good that he's been gluten-free. The new GI we saw was pretty unwilling to classify him as celiac (though acknowledges the existence of non-celiac gluten intolerance) because our son had a negative biopsy in June 2010. After an x-ray, our son was...
  22. Well, we're in a bit of a hold-up; new GI wants the breath test for lactose intolerance to check for SIBO (if I have that right). Previous hospital did not provide the biopsies (just a report: "biopsies were normal"), but my husband went to get the report today (and to ensure that the slides are sent overnight (breath test is tomorrow). It turns out there...
  23. Yes, they tested his TSH. That was normal. If any other biopsies are done, we will make sure they are in the duodenal bulb. I wish we had known to ask for that in June 2010. Thank you for sharing your story!
  24. I appreciate your first comment--I agree; it's not an "illness". This is more how we've been made to feel. (Similarly, our first has ADD--that, too, is a difference rather than a disorder/illness.) We are ready to go gluten-free, and want to wait, at this point, until we've met with this new doctor. Especially hearing that the biopsies two years ago may...
