  1. I'm a vegetarian too and I know what you mean, I felt the exact same way. I couldn't eat enough nuts or beans during my nut phase. I found that eating more beans, and adding corn pasta, rice and rice bread into my diet helped fill the gap that was missing. For a while all I ate was soy milk, fruits and veggies, and I never really felt full. I think that...
  2. Nyquil has an antihistamine in it which causes drowsiness, but not for everyone. Your resction isn't that unusual. Same goes for tylenol 3, tylenol PM, and travel tabs, for most people they cause drowsiness, but for other people they are an upper.
  3. Have you seen a dr about it? It may have nothing to do with celiac. To me it sounds neurological rather than muscular (because of your skin being so sensitive.)
  4. I think you might have read the OP a little too fast. She ate Cheetos not Cheerios. Also Quaker makes other products beyond Quaker Oats. The OP ate grits not oats. I don't know exactly what grits are since I've never eaten it, but I know its not oat based.
  5. I'm honest. Work, and family know that I can't eat gluten. They are both very good about it. I don't feel like I need to pretend. When strangers offer me glutenous food I just say "no, thank you." If they push it, then I tell them I have a lot of food allergies/ that I don't eat flour. I'm not hurting anyone's feelings by being honest.
  6. Nope, never happened to me either. Both of my sisters cannot eat rice, the call it "sushi sickness". 20 minutes after eating sushi, they are in the bathroom. Rice is usually really digestible. If your body is rejecting rice, maybe you shouldn't eat it!
  7. I live alone, so my place is 100% gluten-free. Even my cats are gluten-free. I don't know what I'm going to do when my situation changes. When I have kids, I know that I will raise them vegetarian, and gluten-free. It is a healthier lifestyle, and would be much easier than cooking 2 meals and having to worry about CC. I work with teens in a group home...
  8. I used to go to a restaurant starving hungry. When the bread came, I would dive in. The next day I would be laying on the couch wanting to die. So stupid! Now I eat a bit before I go out so I won't be tempted to eat the bread. For me, bread was like crack. I craved it, but it was killing me. I needed to stop eating bread to stop the cravings. ...
  9. I contact companies all the time. It makes me feel better knowing what is safe and what is not. There are a lot of foods that I thought I couldn't eat, but I can! Lots of companies have allergy information on their websites, others I email. There are very few companies that I have had to call. I'm sometimes surprised to see the huge amount of information...
  10. I have really been enjoying a couple different brands of prepackaged indian foods. They come in a vaccum sealed bag and best of all, no preservatives, most are vegetarian and many are gluten-free. You can plop a couple bags in a pot of boiling water to heat, or pour it in a pot (I use the microwave). I think that you could definately eat them without warming...
  11. Before I finally went gluten-free, I was gluten-light except when I went out to eat. It seemed that every time I went to a family member's house I would get sick (and grumpy). I felt like I was "Debbie-downer" so I would try to hide how sick I was. A friend of mine was so kind as to suggest that perhaps it was all in my mind. From then on, I started to...
  12. oh, yes I know that belly well. I plan my outfit in the morning by what my stomach will eventually look like. I'm a size 10 in the morning and a 16 when I've eaten gluten. Several of my neighbours thought that I was preggers last year because of the belly. I could not believe it. Two months gluten-free and it's slowly getting better, I've lost a few...
  13. I'm in the Vancity area too. I don't have kids, so I don't really have any tips for you other than maybe checking out a blog called "Vegan Lunchbox" It is written by a very creative mom who made some amazing but simple lunches for her kid. It's not a Gluten-free website, but a lot of her recipes are Gluten-free. It might give you some ideas for making...
  14. hello all, add me to the list of Canadian celiacs (Vancovuer). I don't have an official diagnosis. 7 years ago all tests were negative including endoscope. I went mostly wheat-free for the next 7 years, but the last year I started to feel really sick. 2 months ago I got the blood tests and the test results indicated a false negative. I don't really know...
  15. I'm sick for 3 days when I get gluttoned. In the good old days it was only 1 day if I binged on croissants.
  16. My reaction to gluten is extreme gas, pain and I feel like I should make a BM. but nothing happens. After 3 days of agony, I get D. I find that taking a laxative helps things move along. I don't always have 6-12 hours with nothing to do but wait for the pills to kick in. If I pop the pills early on, it shortens the sickness by about 3 days, but there...
  17. I used to cheat. I first got sick in 2001, went wheat free, and constantly cheated. I wasn't diagnosed Celiac, but allergic to wheat. I didn't feel sick unless I cheated too often (or wheat-binged). Fast forward 7 years, I was cheating several times a week. Gluten sickness used to last 1 day, now it lasts 3 days, with stomach pain so bad I thought I...
  18. I quit gluten May 1/08. My iron count had been slightly low for years, in late April it was 5. Everyone I've told that to gives me a look like it couldn't have been possible. I felt "fine" (other than my gluten-induced hell). I get tested again August 1st, we'll see if the iron supplements have helped. I do feel so much better and have more energy, but...
  19. Nope those are the 2 tests my dr requested. It says that the normal range is 0.9-5.5 g/L. So what does a really low number mean here?
  20. I just got my results back: IgA <0.05 IgA anti-tissue transglutaminase <2 I'm confused. At first the dr said I don't have celiac, and then the more he talked the more he started to lean towards maybe I do. He said that because my carotene levels were good, it doesn't look like I have malabsorption happening. On my test result it says that...
