    ARCHIVED On A Budget

Thanks for your lengthy answer,GalAZ, I have only Safeway and Basha's available locally (that mega store is has put the moms and pops out of business... even impacted the variety of fresh produce I can get in the regular markets) ... Rice chex is now one of my staples.... A whole foods store and Frys in Flagstaff.... 65 miles is the nearest places that...

    ARCHIVED On A Budget

Thanks for all of the responses.... I was managing pretty well until the weather got so hot.... I can not tolerate the swamp cooler and AC is so expensive.... I usually cut down my cooking in the summer.... Cook early in the wee hours to eat later.... 18 months ago we revamped all of our recipes to fit my husbands LOW Sodium low fat eating regimen.... now...
  4. I am trying to stay gluten free on a budget... One of my biggest expenses is travel... I can buy Rice Chex at one local market and gluten free pancake mix at 4x the normal cost at another local market... Then I must travel 120 miles round trip to find other products.... I frankly do not like ordering food on line.... I find most the the items on this site...
  5. Thanks
  6. I notice that some respondents have little bios after their replies. How does one add a little bio ... that is printed each time you respond... This question may be asked a lot.... I did look through several pages of the message board before posting this question.... I know that questions like this could be annoying if/when asked again and again.
  7. When ever I try to use spell check ... I get a message iespell not installed... It is installed!!!
  8. Dear terrified, I can not tell you NOT to be frightened but try to stay calm and enjoy your baby.... while awaiting test results.... It may well be that the birth of your child "triggered" your celiac disease to an active status and that you have not been actively celiac for any where near 36 years. I was recently diagnosed with Celiac disease at age...
  9. Hello, since you are young enough to be concerned about infertility, I would not be as concerned about getting a bone scan.... you do not want to take any of the medications prescribed for bone loss if you wish to get pregnant..... Educate your self about building bone naturally... you are young enough to do it.... Unless you also have milk allergies...
  10. Hi, 2 years is really a short amount of time when it comes to celiac disease. I was just recently diagnosesed, too... If my trigger was the mono I had at age 17 ... I have had celiac disease for 50 years... I admit ... I did learn during that time to eliminate most white wheat from my diet... really baked goods... I thought I had a reaction to baking...
  11. I woke up here in Arizona to a very cool morning... a great day to cook the small pork loin in the freezer. I am newly diagnosesed. I live in a small town.... over 50 miles from the nearest gluten free market.... I usually roast a pork loin in a bed of bread stuffing to keep it moist. This is a very lean no visable fat loin. Any suggestions....
  12. Peggy, I do not think the problem is gluten.... I have never been able to use Lucerne products... yogurt/ cheese /milk. I suspect but do not know for sure... that the culprit may be the type of antibiotic fed to the cows... I react to Lucerne products exactly as you describe and I also react that way to Titracycoline ane Erthromiecine (spell checker not...
  13. Hi Brainfood, I am new to this celiac thing but I am an old hand at reading labels. (garlic sensitivity) .. you have been given some good advice on reading glasses and magnifyiers.... so let me give you some other tips. When you forget your glasses in a supermarket ... find and employee/stock person and ask them to read the label. I live in a small...
  14. When the doctors asked me about foods that bothered me ... possible allergies... my list was 3 pages long.... 3 pages of foods and ( products ) that I avoided... when I look at the list now.... I can see that some of my "allegeries " were reaction to gluten... the oily after taste and digestive turmoil after eating baked goods was probably not reaction...
  15. interesting!? I was a smoker too but did not have similar problems when I finally was able to quite after umpteen tries... I did have drastic stomach problems the summer that I tried to quit using nicotine gum.... Then it was about 6 months before my system settled down...
  16. I went to the doctor because of a bad taste in my mouth. Thought it might be acid reflux. He sent me to a gastroent/specialist..... ( not on my spell list) I had an upper and lower GI and a small bowel biopsy as well as photos.... The specialist was certain that I had celiac disease but scheduled blood work for me anyway... The blood work confirmed...
  17. I am a newbie, too. Good to hear the positive response/feed back you are getting from other members... I am getting positive support of my husband, too. He does a lot of the cooking... and now that he understands the cross contamination issue... he has revamped the kitchen cupboards. He still has his store bought bread and crackers ... but for baking...
  18. Jason you need an accurate diagnosis and once you have a positive diagnosis... you need to consult with a dietitian that is very famialar with Celiac. First you must understand the disease from your comments I think you have not gotten all pertinent information ... and THEN you must share this information with family friends and co workers....Had you been...
