  1. Here is an e-mail I received from Shadybrook Farms (brand of poultry products available at Lowes Foods in NC): Dear [redacted], Thank you for contacting Shady Brook Farms. At this time, we have only 4 products that contain gluten: Italian Style Meatballs Appetizer Sized Meatballs Cajun Fried Turkey Teriyaki Turkey Breast Tenderloins (CONTAIN...
  2. I don't mean to be critical, but I think you may be misinformed. My understanding of the FDA's requirement for labeling is that "wheat", as one of the Big 8 allergens, must be listed. I haven't seen anything yet published by the FDA that says rye, barley, and oats must be listed as well. The appellation "gluten-free" is only voluntary; so if something...
  3. My mother-in-law talked to our local butcher about gluten-free turkeys. He suggested Bell and Evans brand. I just called them and talked to a woman named Jen. She assured me that they don't add anything to their birds so they are gluten-free. All their chicken and turkey leaves their packaging facility as fresh poultry. They may freeze some of it in...
  4. Wendy's has been a life-saver for me! Diagnosed in February, I've had trouble with veggies and dairy as well as staying gluten-free. A Wendy's plain baked-potato with chili (taking out the beans) has been the perfect fast-food meal when my husband and I have been on trips or just don't want to cook. I can manage salad again now, so we've had fewer meals...
  5. The previous post was great! Also, keep in mind that if you do have Celiac Disease, then your body needs time to heal. With Celiac Disease, the immune response that's triggered by gluten damages the lining of the small intestine. If the lining is damaged, even in patches, you're missing some of your ability to digest. Undigested food can make for some...
  6. Has anyone eaten gluten-free at Emeril's New Orleans in New Orleans? I'll be there on Sat 9/13 with friends to celebrate an upcoming wedding. It's my friend's favorite restaurant (she's from LA), but I've never been. I haven't been back to New Orleans since dx early this year, so I'm a little wary. I'm taking my own breakfast and snack foods, but I'll...
  7. My doctor told me they were running the TTG test, but I was really expecting all my lab results to be negative. The diagnosis was a surprise even to the doctor. They were thinking that I had diverticulosis based on my symptoms. So, for me it was good to have a diagnosis that seemed better to me than diverticulosis, but it was a shock. At first, I had...
  8. Thank you, all. I'm doing fairly well now, having stopped drinking coffee, taking a much lower carb approach to my diet, and eating smaller but more meals. I'm resigned to avoiding lactose for another 6 months. I seem to tolerate Lactaid milk OK in small doses. I'll try a re-challenge with lactose in very small amounts early in 2009. I may plan to re...
  9. I'm a big fan of the pancake/waffle mix, too. I make a whole batch at one time and freeze them in single-serve bags. They defrost well and are great toasted to get the crispiness back. I didn't like the yellow cake mix, but I think I should try it again. I'm not sure I had completely forgotten what wheat flour cake tastes like when I had it before...
  10. Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is a fantastic link. I'm starting month 6 gluten-free and have become increasingly frustrated about avoiding raw veggies and anything with lactose. I'm hoping I'll heal quickly, but the references in this thread to one-two-and-three years of lactose intolerance are hopefully making my expectations more realistic.
  11. Hi, Beth in NC. I'm in the same boat right now. Please excuse some of the graphic symptom description, but I hope you'll understand! I've been avoiding all fiber, too, but I made up my mind today to eat start back eating small amounts of soluble fiber (peeled and cooked fruits & veggies, quinoa, nuts, flaxseed meal, psyllium) and avoid only the insoluble...
  12. In the 7 short days I have been gluten free, my life has changed for the better. Thus far, the pros have far outweighed any cons Granted, there's a long way to go to get to where I want to be, but atleast now - finally, things are moving in the right direction. That is something I have been waiting for, for far too long.
  13. I disclosed to Northwestern Mutual when my husband and I were planning to get additional life insurance. My premium would have been about 1/2 again as much because of celiac disease. After 2 years they would reassess but don't promise anything. They also increased my husband's quoted premium due to elevated liver enzymes (he has genetic cholesterol issues...
  14. OK, I was probably stupid about this, but I've been dying for cheese so I bought some goat cheese at Fresh Market two weeks ago. I forget the brand, but the label was clear: Goat's milk, rennet, salt, enzymes. I thought it was safe (gluten-free at least) and after 5 months eating gluten-free I was hoping that my lactose intolerance was fading away. Wrong...
