  1. I screamed for the first few months of my life until my mom stopped eating dairy (she was breastfeeding me). My first daugheter screamed for the first 3 months of her life until we cut out soy (we were already dairy free). She stopped overnight. My second daughter fell off the growth charts in an extreme way (with many other problems) until we cut out gluten...
  2. One more thing: Some celiacs do not show the typical symptoms. My older daughter did not have any symptoms that I was aware of. She did have a large belly for her size, but she LOVED to eat, so we just figured it was from liking to eat a lot and having a full belly. We put her on a gluten-free diet when we put our second daughter on it (who was failing to...
  3. For us it took 3 weeks before we noticed any changes in our daughter. Then we got improvements in appetite, sleep patterns, and attitude adjustments. She is gaining weight very slowly (I wish it was faster!!!!) but at least it is gain and not loss. We started the diet about 3 1/2 months ago. To answer your question, we saw improvements, but not as quickly...
  4. I don't know what your child's status was, but be encouraged by this: Be glad that your doctor said "You are the mom, do what you think is right." In our situation, we have to rather prove to THEM that gluten is the problem, and fight to keep CPS off of our back because our daughter had lost so much weight before we came across the gluten-free idea. Testing...
  5. We also saw a HUGE improvement in eating - went from practically force feeding our daughter to not being able to feed her enough! She wasn't drinking from a sippy yet, but all she wanted to do was whine and nurse, whine and nurse some more. Her attitude changed from being a crank-head to a smiley happy child. I was amazed!
  6. We usually do nut milks, but we have to make them ourselves in the blender. Blend nuts with a LITTLE bit of water until very smooth and creamy, then add the rest of the water to thin it out. A TINY pinch of salt and some sweetener or vanilla if you want is a nice addition. This at least gives us other options. We do hazelnut, sunflower, almond, cashew,...
  7. Hooray! Success stories are what keep us all going!
  8. If she is only 16 months old, I wouldn't bother with tests unless you really want to do it, because they are very unreliable, ESPECIALLY until the age of 6. The tests themselves have flaws. Many people can test negative for everything, but the fact is, they react the same (badly!) when they consume gluten. From your daughter's response, I would for sure...
  9. I wanted a response overnight, but it really does take time. I think it was about 3 weeks into the diet before we noticed any changes in our daughter. Not all symptoms improve at the same time. Her appetite came back at around 3 weeks, and her attitude and sleeping patterns got better. It took a few more months before we saw improvements in things like her...
  10. You poor mama! Been there, done that! I know your stressing, but if your little one does have celiac, it DOES GET BETTER and life gets easier! I would suggest going on a gluten-free diet regardless of the outcomes of the tests, because they can be very unreliable until around age 6 as I understand. The proof is in the diet. If she is gluten intolerant...
  11. That makes me feel good because our daughter has seemed to have been slower in the gaining weight category (she has gained a few pounds, but not as fast as many people say happens), but my husband keeps asking me "Have you measured her recently?" because it does look like she has gained in height. I wish I would have measured her before, because now I have...
  12. Casein is a dairy-derived milk protein. It is refined to a white powder by several processes, but it is used as a binding agent in many things. It is highly used in producing industrial glue. This is why it is used in foods like dairy-free cheeses and whatnot - to hold them together. Personally, something that is used to make industrial glue (and other...
  13. Something I agree on - keep a food log. While I am one of those people who would rather have their fingernails ripped off with pliers than keep a food log, I found that actually keeping a daily record of her food was very helpful for several reasons: First, I could see what she actually taking in, making sure she was getting variety and not stuck in the...
  14. Take matters into your own hands. Parents have a better grasp on how their children relate on a day-to-day basis rather than doctors who only run tests and compile symptoms. Try the gluten free diet for a few months (I recommend 3). You will be able to see SOME kind of changes within that time, and you can judge for yourself if they are positive. I put my...
  15. My daughter was not only picky with food - she was totally uninterested. We were at the point of fighting to get food into her. After 3 weeks gluten free she started eating like a horse. MAJOR change! Tinkyada pasta is the best one we've found. I have not been very impressed with most of the gluten-free grain foods i've found, but we do like that pasta...
  16. It depends on how much damage was done, and also how fast you heal. I know that sounds really stupid and basic, but my husband can heal a wound in a few days what would take a month for me. I don't know why that is, although I've always been a slow healer. Daughter has been gluten free for 3 months and we noticed improvements in appetite, sleep, and attitude...
  17. Just to add to the above comments: It DOES take time to heal - anywhere from a few months to a year. I would always recommend trying the gluten free diet for at least 3 months. While we saw changes in our daughter's appetite, attitude and sleeping habits in 3 weeks, just now we have started to see improvements in her bloated belly going down, etc. Some...
  18. The weight and growth thing DEFINITELY depends on the individual. I've heard many many stories where the weight is packed back on pretty fast. I have a friend however whose little boy took about a year to get back together with his weight. I try to remember this in dealing with our daughter, because the weight has not been coming so fast. After 3 months of...
  19. Is there any link between hair growth and going gluten free? I've noticed that after 3 months of being gluten-free my 2 year old suddenly has a lot of hair, and she has been bald since birth. Could just be her timing, but I was wondering if anybody else experienced this?
  20. Definitely try the gluten-free diet. It can't hurt and if that is the problem, you will find out. In 3 weeks we noticed the following changes in our 18 month old (who was 16.5 pounds or so): BIG change in appetite (went from force-feeding to can't fill her up!), finally sleeping peacefully through the night without waking up to cry, and major change in...
  21. LOL! I'm pregnant and wondering the same thing! 2 babies (not diagnosed, but confirmation in response to diet changes) (ages 4 and 2) are gluten intolerant and/or celiac and I'm pregnant with Baby #3. We've all be gluten-free (minus husband) for 3 months, and after the episodes we had with our youngest getting sick, I don't think I'm going to go back on...
  22. Well, like EVERYTHING ELSE in the celiac realm, it depends on the individual. But my daughter gained her appetite back around 3 weeks gluten-free.
  23. This is easier for an adult, but if you can get a child to take it, more power to you! A teaspoon or tablespoon of olive oil will help a LOT. Seems odd, but I had constipation for years and after taking one spoon a day, it cleared up! I don't remember if I took a teaspoon or tablespoon, but a child wouldn't need more than a teaspoon.
  24. We had to fight to get food into my 1 1/2 year old (at the time), and she didn't want to eat ANYthing. Half the time she would try to spit things back out, which was very aggravating. Mostly things like fruit with skins, so I started peeling all those. But she didn't like the texture of almost anything, except very pureed foods and mashed potatoes. We could...
  25. Well, I am used to dealing with crazy family members, so it is probably easier for me to do this, but I absolutely would NOT leave my daughters with family (or anybody else) who does not believe that there is a problem. You may want to give it time for those who oppose to get used to the idea and be educated about it because these things are not very easy...
