ARCHIVED Breastfed 5 Month Old - Highly Sensitive To Wheat/oat/dairy/egg
MarsupialMama replied to baileybit's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I screamed for the first few months of my life until my mom stopped eating dairy (she was breastfeeding me). My first daugheter screamed for the first 3 months of her life until we cut out soy (we were already dairy free). She stopped overnight. My second daughter fell off the growth charts in an extreme way (with many other problems) until we cut out gluten... -
ARCHIVED Frustrated - Help Please
MarsupialMama replied to Jules's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
One more thing: Some celiacs do not show the typical symptoms. My older daughter did not have any symptoms that I was aware of. She did have a large belly for her size, but she LOVED to eat, so we just figured it was from liking to eat a lot and having a full belly. We put her on a gluten-free diet when we put our second daughter on it (who was failing to... -
ARCHIVED Frustrated - Help Please
MarsupialMama replied to Jules's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For us it took 3 weeks before we noticed any changes in our daughter. Then we got improvements in appetite, sleep patterns, and attitude adjustments. She is gaining weight very slowly (I wish it was faster!!!!) but at least it is gain and not loss. We started the diet about 3 1/2 months ago. To answer your question, we saw improvements, but not as quickly... -
ARCHIVED I Need To Vent
MarsupialMama replied to Caseysmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't know what your child's status was, but be encouraged by this: Be glad that your doctor said "You are the mom, do what you think is right." In our situation, we have to rather prove to THEM that gluten is the problem, and fight to keep CPS off of our back because our daughter had lost so much weight before we came across the gluten-free idea. Testing... -
ARCHIVED Day 4 Gluten Free
MarsupialMama replied to wsieving's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We also saw a HUGE improvement in eating - went from practically force feeding our daughter to not being able to feed her enough! She wasn't drinking from a sippy yet, but all she wanted to do was whine and nurse, whine and nurse some more. Her attitude changed from being a crank-head to a smiley happy child. I was amazed! -
ARCHIVED Is Rice Milk The Only Other Option?
MarsupialMama replied to tan2406's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We usually do nut milks, but we have to make them ourselves in the blender. Blend nuts with a LITTLE bit of water until very smooth and creamy, then add the rest of the water to thin it out. A TINY pinch of salt and some sweetener or vanilla if you want is a nice addition. This at least gives us other options. We do hazelnut, sunflower, almond, cashew,... -

ARCHIVED Can I Just Assume It's Celiac's Now?
MarsupialMama replied to 3groovygirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If she is only 16 months old, I wouldn't bother with tests unless you really want to do it, because they are very unreliable, ESPECIALLY until the age of 6. The tests themselves have flaws. Many people can test negative for everything, but the fact is, they react the same (badly!) when they consume gluten. From your daughter's response, I would for sure... -
ARCHIVED How Long Before You See A Change?
MarsupialMama replied to nitu-752002's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wanted a response overnight, but it really does take time. I think it was about 3 weeks into the diet before we noticed any changes in our daughter. Not all symptoms improve at the same time. Her appetite came back at around 3 weeks, and her attitude and sleeping patterns got better. It took a few more months before we saw improvements in things like her... -
ARCHIVED 16 Month Old, Possible Celiacs...very Confused
MarsupialMama replied to Mommy2Ellie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You poor mama! Been there, done that! I know your stressing, but if your little one does have celiac, it DOES GET BETTER and life gets easier! I would suggest going on a gluten-free diet regardless of the outcomes of the tests, because they can be very unreliable until around age 6 as I understand. The proof is in the diet. If she is gluten intolerant... -
ARCHIVED Catch Up Growth
MarsupialMama replied to bear6954's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That makes me feel good because our daughter has seemed to have been slower in the gaining weight category (she has gained a few pounds, but not as fast as many people say happens), but my husband keeps asking me "Have you measured her recently?" because it does look like she has gained in height. I wish I would have measured her before, because now I have... -
ARCHIVED Hi! I Am A Mom Who Needs Help
MarsupialMama replied to Omshanti2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Casein is a dairy-derived milk protein. It is refined to a white powder by several processes, but it is used as a binding agent in many things. It is highly used in producing industrial glue. This is why it is used in foods like dairy-free cheeses and whatnot - to hold them together. Personally, something that is used to make industrial glue (and other... -
ARCHIVED Help 15 Mth Old W/ Symptoms Of Celiac Drs No Help
MarsupialMama replied to kbalman's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Something I agree on - keep a food log. While I am one of those people who would rather have their fingernails ripped off with pliers than keep a food log, I found that actually keeping a daily record of her food was very helpful for several reasons: First, I could see what she actually taking in, making sure she was getting variety and not stuck in the... -
ARCHIVED Help 15 Mth Old W/ Symptoms Of Celiac Drs No Help
MarsupialMama replied to kbalman's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Take matters into your own hands. Parents have a better grasp on how their children relate on a day-to-day basis rather than doctors who only run tests and compile symptoms. Try the gluten free diet for a few months (I recommend 3). You will be able to see SOME kind of changes within that time, and you can judge for yourself if they are positive. I put my... -
ARCHIVED New, She's Not Diagnosed Yet
MarsupialMama replied to sugarsue's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter was not only picky with food - she was totally uninterested. We were at the point of fighting to get food into her. After 3 weeks gluten free she started eating like a horse. MAJOR change! Tinkyada pasta is the best one we've found. I have not been very impressed with most of the gluten-free grain foods i've found, but we do like that pasta... -
ARCHIVED How Long Is The Healing Process For 2 Year Old?
MarsupialMama replied to Jules's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It depends on how much damage was done, and also how fast you heal. I know that sounds really stupid and basic, but my husband can heal a wound in a few days what would take a month for me. I don't know why that is, although I've always been a slow healer. Daughter has been gluten free for 3 months and we noticed improvements in appetite, sleep, and attitude... -
ARCHIVED Advice - Info 15 Mth Old Son
MarsupialMama replied to Hannahsmommylisaw's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just to add to the above comments: It DOES take time to heal - anywhere from a few months to a year. I would always recommend trying the gluten free diet for at least 3 months. While we saw changes in our daughter's appetite, attitude and sleeping habits in 3 weeks, just now we have started to see improvements in her bloated belly going down, etc. Some... -
ARCHIVED Catch Up Growth
MarsupialMama replied to bear6954's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The weight and growth thing DEFINITELY depends on the individual. I've heard many many stories where the weight is packed back on pretty fast. I have a friend however whose little boy took about a year to get back together with his weight. I try to remember this in dealing with our daughter, because the weight has not been coming so fast. After 3 months of... -
ARCHIVED Hair Growth After Going Gluten Free?
MarsupialMama posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Is there any link between hair growth and going gluten free? I've noticed that after 3 months of being gluten-free my 2 year old suddenly has a lot of hair, and she has been bald since birth. Could just be her timing, but I was wondering if anybody else experienced this? -
ARCHIVED 18 Month Old <3rd % Weight
MarsupialMama replied to jennyo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Definitely try the gluten-free diet. It can't hurt and if that is the problem, you will find out. In 3 weeks we noticed the following changes in our 18 month old (who was 16.5 pounds or so): BIG change in appetite (went from force-feeding to can't fill her up!), finally sleeping peacefully through the night without waking up to cry, and major change in... -
ARCHIVED Should I Eat gluten-free While Preg. Im Not Celiac But Youngest Is
MarsupialMama replied to Lainey's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
LOL! I'm pregnant and wondering the same thing! 2 babies (not diagnosed, but confirmation in response to diet changes) (ages 4 and 2) are gluten intolerant and/or celiac and I'm pregnant with Baby #3. We've all be gluten-free (minus husband) for 3 months, and after the episodes we had with our youngest getting sick, I don't think I'm going to go back on... -
ARCHIVED Chew And Spit
MarsupialMama replied to wsieving's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, like EVERYTHING ELSE in the celiac realm, it depends on the individual. But my daughter gained her appetite back around 3 weeks gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED What's Best For Constipation?
MarsupialMama replied to mama2two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is easier for an adult, but if you can get a child to take it, more power to you! A teaspoon or tablespoon of olive oil will help a LOT. Seems odd, but I had constipation for years and after taking one spoon a day, it cleared up! I don't remember if I took a teaspoon or tablespoon, but a child wouldn't need more than a teaspoon. -
ARCHIVED Chew And Spit
MarsupialMama replied to wsieving's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We had to fight to get food into my 1 1/2 year old (at the time), and she didn't want to eat ANYthing. Half the time she would try to spit things back out, which was very aggravating. Mostly things like fruit with skins, so I started peeling all those. But she didn't like the texture of almost anything, except very pureed foods and mashed potatoes. We could... -
ARCHIVED Telling Family
MarsupialMama replied to wsieving's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, I am used to dealing with crazy family members, so it is probably easier for me to do this, but I absolutely would NOT leave my daughters with family (or anybody else) who does not believe that there is a problem. You may want to give it time for those who oppose to get used to the idea and be educated about it because these things are not very easy...
