  1. He wants to diagnose via biopsy, so he's asking me to do it again. A pain, a really big pain.
  2. Hello, I was previously diagnosed with celiac disease based on mild indicators on blood tests. My doctor asked me to immediately start the diet since I wasn't absorbing any of the food I was eating and he did not want to risk it. I was severely underweight. Anyway, I went to a gastroenterologist this year who requested, begged, that I get the biopsy done...
  3. You just have to learn to advocate for yourself and you will get the treatment you deserve. I am lucky to have an understanding college Dining staff.
  4. We are special despite this legislation. Not everyone is gluten-free. I do not think so. Also, just because we are covered by the ADA does not mean we get "benefits." On the contrary, we have to advocate for ourselves in order to get basic things from our schools - meals that are good for us, a healthy lifestyle.
  5. No, I live in a dorm. I do nothing of the sort. Dining Hall staff washes my dishes. I don't take up anything... space-wise. Sometimes, I do feel like I am taking up the staff's time, but then I remember I'm not the only one. The dining hall prepares ALL of my meals. They are required to since I am paying for room and board and people with food allergies and...
  6. I eat Rice Chex or Gorilla Munch with Soy Milk. I prefer almond milk actually, but the school doesn't have any. They have Rice Dream, but as far as I know that contains a small amount of barley, and I think it tastes really bad, anyway. I also can have gluten-free pancakes; the dining hall will make those for me sometimes. They have the Trader Joe's mix,...
  7. Salut! I suggest looking into going to New York; there are a good number of celiacs and it is a great place for someone who is just arriving from abroad. There is a good French population as well, which would make your journey that much easier. Gluten Free New York often has meet-ups, so asking them for help would be in your best interest. Bon voyage...
  8. My college requires that we tell them ahead of time. I have never told a professor, lest I have had to miss class for a doctor's appointment, but even then I don't tell them why I need to go to the doctor. As for the last part, I find that so weird and I am so grateful I go to my school! Our exams are never proctored; we take our finals on our own time and...
  9. I love Gorilla Munch!! With almond milk, they're perfect (I'm casein sensitive - perhaps intolerant...). It tastes like Kix. I spent a long time just eating Rice Chex over the past few months since it's "the special cereal" my school ordered for me. I went to the local supermarket, discovered Gorilla Munch and I like it a lot. Granted, these are the only...
  10. Hi all, I've heard complaints of gluten-free college dining in the past. I'm curious about other's experiences at their respective colleges. My school is very good and cooks special meals for me whenever I need them, the benefit of a small school with several dining halls. I made the transition while in college (during the summer, which made it easier...
  11. There was an article in Discover last year about another "Real Doctor House." Nice to see that there is more than one "real Doctor House" out there! It gives me faith in the medical profession.
  12. No, I was gluten free for five months, and I was preparing for the biopsy for one month on a heavy gluten-diet. I have not yet had the barium test (that is the next step). Sorry, that was very unclear.
  13. I recently went for an EGD and had a full celiac panel done. All came back negative; there was absolutely no sign of villous atrophy. My intestines were in good shape (one biopsy was taken of the small intestine). Aside from this, I am relatively healthy. I have a small hiatal hernia, GERD and I have iron-deficiency anemia, but I am otherwise, fine. Now,...
  14. I go to one of the five colleges (inc) in western Mass., and there is really a lot for us gluten-free people here. It's amazing.
  15. Hi, welcome!!! I am from New York City as well, but to be honest with you, I don't eat out much, and I go to school in Massachusetts, so I am unfamiliar with much of the NYCGF world. I was just diagnosed this summer, so I hope to explore more of it when I have more time at home!
