Somehow about a week ago, I fell victim to cross contamination. I have spent hours trying to figure out where it came from, but I am at a loss. Anyway, last week, the horrible gas, the distended belly (it's seriously hard as a rock), canker sores, diarrhea, cramping and stomach gurgling came back big time. I've been glutened about 4-5 times in the year...

ARCHIVED Just Hit Me That I Can't Have A "normal" Thanksgiving
mamaesq replied to lpjourney's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know how hard it is. Last year was my first gluten-free Thanksgiving and even though my mom was diagnosed the same day I was, she didn't want to do a gluten-free Thanksgiving because "it wasn't fair to the others." So, I suffered through it and was sick for a week. This year she came to her senses and we're doing a gluten free turkey and a regular one... -
It is truly wonderful to have such a supportive husband. I was diagnosed last October and spent the holidays learning what I could and could not eat. My husband went out of his way to organic grocery stores near his job to buy gluten free baking mixes, and he spent hours baking pies and cheesecakes that I could eat. He has tweaked some of his favorite...

ARCHIVED First Week Going Gluten Free And Very Emotional!
mamaesq replied to Jallen's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My canker sores are mostly gone too. The only time I get them is if I have an accidental gluten ingestion. I accidentally had some on Sunday afternoon, I had diarrhea on Sunday night and a big sore on my gum on Monday morning. It's how I know if I was glutened or if I am sick. It will get easier. I cried most of October whenever food was involved... -
ARCHIVED Why Do Some People With Celiac Disease Look So Healthy And Other's Don't
mamaesq replied to Ms. Skinny Chic's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was also at my heaviest when I was diagnosed, despite trying everything possible to lose weight. Once I went gluten-free, the weight started coming off immediately. I have lost close to 30 lbs in nine months. I would love to lose another 10, but if I don't, I'm still happy with how I look and feel. I never EVER thought I would feel this good again. -
ARCHIVED Lost A Lot Of Weight After Going Gluten Free
mamaesq replied to MomOf2PrettyGirls's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was diagnosed on October 2 and have lost nearly 30 lbs since then. I ran anywhere up to 7 miles at a time 4-6 times a week last summer and kept gaining instead of losing. Once I was diagnosed, I stopped running (mainly because of weather and laziness), but that's when my weight began to drop. Within two weeks I was down over 5 lbs and by December I had... -
ARCHIVED Question About Meat?
mamaesq replied to mommaof4's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I try to avoid it (I see it mostly with chicken), but that's mostly because I don't think it tastes as good as normal chicken. Now that I am gluten-free, I am even more conscious of it since they don't label what the solution is. -
ARCHIVED Having My Son Evaluated For Celiac Disease
mamaesq replied to mamaesq's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We're a week into the gluten free diet. I took him to see my gastroenterologist and he ordered the genetic test (finally!) so we should have those results in a week. He's also having a complete stool analysis because the doctor thinks there is malabortption of some sort going on, even though his bloodwork has been negative for celiac thus far. He had an... -
ARCHIVED Gain Weight Or Lose On Gluten Free?
mamaesq replied to Raynee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've lost about 30 lbs since October, I read in Gluten Free for Dummies that overweight celiacs tend to lose and underweight celiacs tend to gain. It makes sense... -
ARCHIVED Neg Blood Tests, Now What?
mamaesq replied to balmerhon's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I forgot about the Whole Foods in Annapolis...I hear it is is absolutely amazing. It is shocking to see the grocery bills go up so much! We are a couple of days into the diet and he's doing pretty well. He suddenly hates fruit, and now I feel like his diet is even more limited. I think he might be feeling pretty good- he's been in a really great... -
ARCHIVED Does Going gluten-free Change Child's Behavior Quickly?
mamaesq replied to cgwilde's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I noticed this tonight!! I started my 4 year old on a trial gluten-free diet after discussing it with my pediatrician (I posted about this below). I have been gluten-free since October when I was diagnosed and have been convinced that he is at the very least gluten intolerant. Tonight I was putting him to bed and I thought that his eyes looked a lot better... -
ARCHIVED Having My Son Evaluated For Celiac Disease
mamaesq replied to mamaesq's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, my son's bloodwork all came back negative, but we're still dealing with the same issues as before. Dr. Fasano said to just watch him and to reevaluate him as he gets older. The pediatrician saw him yesterday for a 6 month weight check, and he's gained a little over a pound. He wanted my son to weigh 35 pounds by now, but he's still below 34.... -
ARCHIVED Neg Blood Tests, Now What?
mamaesq replied to balmerhon's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hey Hon! Love the name! I took my 4 year old to see Dr. Fasano at University of Maryland earlier this year and his bloodwork was fine, so he didn't do anything else. I was diagnosed with celiac in October and my son is itty bitty, so I worry. He has constipation, always complains about tummyaches, gets canker sores, can be irritable, etc. My son... -
ARCHIVED I'm Not Gluten Intolerant After All :-(
mamaesq replied to Greg56's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Greg, I am so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I lost my grandfather to pancreatic cancer in December and have gotten really involved with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. I've lobbied Congress the last two years to try to get more funding for pancreatic cancer through the organization. They are a tremendous group of people and provide great support... -
ARCHIVED Surprise Benefits Of Going gluten-free
mamaesq replied to mikehall117's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Libbyanne- I actually checked out the menu before we went, but nothing sounded good to me. I used to stuff myself with the chicken parmesan or chicken alfredo, and the thought of getting grilled chicken and veggies seemed less than appealing. My sister has eaten there since she went gluten-free and had a great meal, but I was being fickle I guess! Thank... -
ARCHIVED Surprise Benefits Of Going gluten-free
mamaesq replied to mikehall117's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
YES YES YES!!!! I am in love with my arms. I feel them all the time and I can't believe that they are MINE!!!! They used to be everywhere on the backs of my arms and on the first warm day when I wore a short sleeve shirt, I noticed it. I was thrilled! My 4 year old son, who has tested negative on his bloodwork (but I think he has a gluten intolerance... -
ARCHIVED For Those Who Were Diagnosed After Having A Baby..
mamaesq replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think I've always had some issues, but I was diagnosed 27 months after my youngest was born. I had pre-eclampsia and an emergency c/s (stalled labor, high fever, and decels) with my first, and I often wonder if that triggered something. Things definitely got worse after my youngest baby was born 20 months later. I was always bloated, but it got so... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Oops...how Soon Will Symptoms Onset?
mamaesq replied to Tim86's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had different reactions. Mostly, I am really gassy, have diarrhea for a few days, and am so bloated. I wore a pair of pants on a Wednesday, got cross contaminated on Thursday night, and wore the same pants on Friday afternoon and they didn't fit me. Fortunately they were side zip suit pants and the shirt and jacket I wore was long enough to cover... -
ARCHIVED Why Does Removing Gluten Makes Symptoms More Obvious
mamaesq replied to sugarsue's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been gluten-free since October 2, and I can think of 5 times that I've ingested gluten (only once was intentional...it was after my grandfather died and I was eating pizza in part because it was St. Louis style and I haven't had it in years, but also, it was part of grieving for me...I learned THAT lesson). The first time was about 2 weeks after... -

ARCHIVED Overweight With Celiac Disease...is It Possible?
mamaesq replied to susie-q's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was...I was diagnosed on 10/2/08. I weighed 163 lbs (I am 5'2". I went gluten free, and today I'm 143, and I'm still losing. I went on a shopping spree the day after Christmas for new clothes and they are already loose. I eat like a little piggy too! I feel better than I ever have!! You mention that you are asthmatic- me too. My pulmonary function... -
Last night I went to dinner with my family to a restaurant where they are very familiar with our dietary needs. Oh, and my sister, who is also gluten-free works there. So, I got my usual, a cheeseburger with no bun and french fries (because they have a dedicated fryer!!!!), but when I heard my sister order chili, I decided that I had to have some too. I...

ARCHIVED Diagnosing Celiac
mamaesq replied to anniebeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The reaction can be that quick. When I have something with gluten, I can tell usually within a few hours. Yesterday I licked an envelope (apparently a big no-no, and I had forgotten this), and then took a tiny piece of icing off of a cake, I figured since it was touching the part of the cake that was touching icing, I would be ok. Apparently not. A couple... -
ARCHIVED My gluten-free Might Have Celiac...

There are some beers that she can drink too, like RedBridge and Bard's Tale. -
Mine went pretty much as I predicted. My in laws had normal turkey dinner stuffed with regular stuffing (which took a tremendous amount of willpower to avoid because it is soooooo good...fortunately, I won the battle!). I only ate a small bit of turkey because I knew it was contaminated, some mashed potatoes and corn...no gravy. Then at my parent...
