  1. I know how you feel! I've totally been there! I've found for myself I have to be less scared of telling people what I need to stay well :) if I act nervous or like I don't "deserve" to say it, people are more likely to not be understanding. Hope things get better!

Stephanie, I'm very interested in peer-reviewed studies! It would be so nice to show them to people who are close to me but maybe a little bit skeptical? Or even just for myself, I'm very curious :)

  2. Aww... I've been there!

I love the picnic idea... I did that a lot this summer :)

Anyway, I've online dated before and I agree with what everyone said... I usually just tell them when it comes up naturally, like if they suggest a restaurant and I'll say, " I hope this is okay, but I have a really sensitive gluten allergy... Could we go to x or y place instead ( or do x and y instead) ? "

Have so much fun dating :)!!

  3. Wow, you look great in the second picture ! I get how that is... I don't have a diagnosis either :(. My doctor said he "strongly suspects " I have celiac disease.

The most awful thing that ever happened to me was I had gotten serious with this person I thought was the one for me, and one of his friends ( I guess she was having a hard time because she was going through a divorce she didn't want to have ) started telling him and his family that I was making it up for attention and naming all the "attention seeking" things I did ( ie I jumped away when the bread tray was under my nose at a party) .

It was so awful for me because the truth is I would do anything ANYTHING just to be like everyone else and the rest of them who were being so mean behind my back, although my boyfriend at the time informed me of every word they said.

I would never do this again, and I don't know why I did but I was so worried about appearing attention-seeking the next time I saw that woman I ended up being super sick for weeks because I didn't want to appear "picky" . She had of course brought trays full of crumbly sugar cookies to the party :(. One of the toddlers stuck her hands in my mouth after eating :(

It was so horrible . Couldn't win either way :(

  4. I love Harvester! I went there last year and I was so excited when my boyfriend found it at a place close to his place here in Vancouver BC.

I am also super sensitive but I've never reacted to New Grist. I guess there's people in the world more sensitive than me! It certainly doesn't seem so over here… I've never met anyone who reacts to such low ppm as I do :-(

Anyway, I would stay away from "gluten removed" beers if you are sensitive !

  5. Hi there!

I'm super busy making a raw food dinner for my friends but I just wanted to give you my two cents.

I was just like your wife, SUPER sensitive to anything, getting sick all the time, continuing symptoms even though I was completely gluten free even down to my personal care products, which were also free from gluten cross contamination. I was only working three days a week.

About 2 years ago I went raw. It took me a much longer time to get healthy (maybe 6 moths-1 year) and while I still get stomach aches, I am now working full time and perusing a full time masters degree. It's awesome.

I understand your concern about protein, but I found I did not do to well on nuts as a protein source. I don't know why. Sashimi went over well, (and for some reason goat cheese, especially raw and organic) and I also find that if one or two days a week I eat a normal gluten free meal, I feel better physically and it's better for my sanity.

Mostly I'm fruitarian though, meaning I eat fruit all day and sometimes green smoothies. I'll usually have a very large salad in the evening. Apparently there are people that eat ONLY fruit and thrive without protein deficiencies, but I found that was a little too restrictive for me and I didn't feel quite right. But I think we need less protein than you think. I've been eating mostly fruit for a year and I am fine :-) I do supplement Iron, calcium and D.

I found this out for me by trial and error. I just wanted to write you cause your wife sounds just like I was and I want to help and give her hope! I totally know how it feels :-(

I hope you try raw and figure out how to modify the diet in a way that works for her.

  6. Hello!

I know it's been a very long time since you've posted, but I am a super sensitive celiac thinking of traveling to Panama. How did you find people in Panama were in regards to your allergy when eating out? Did you have problems explaining the dangers of cross-contamination?

Thank you so much for your help!

  7. Hey! I know this topic is old but I thought I'd put in my two cents :-)

I am super, super sensitive and one of the worst glutenings I have ever had was from my hair conditioner. When I read the ingredients, there was actually wheat protein on there! After that I threw out all my personal care products and just bought gluten free ones.

So if your girlfriend is having a shower BEFORE she sees you she might be glutening her hair!

I love desert essence organics. They smell yummy and are 100% gluten free.

Did you ever find out what was making you sick?

  8. Hey Sarah,

I'm from Canada, so the brands might not be the exact same, but I love to travel or go on rad trips. I always bring a bunch of fruit, kettle potato chips and safe rice crackers. For something more filling in case I can't find a safe meal I like tasty bite indian meals. They come in a little pouch so you can throw the whole pouch in boiling water and then you don't have to worry about any cross contamination on the pots and pans they use. There is a lentil one that is dairy free and has a ton of protein and iron. I am super-sensitive so I'm pretty sure these things are all gluten-free.

I also like to bring my own sponge because I got super sick years ago after washing gluten-y pots and then washing my dished with the same sponge. I don't know how sensitive you are so I'm not sure if that would be a concern for you or not.

I want to go on a gluten free trip!!!! But Bob's and Ruth's is so expensive :-(

  9. LOL, I've fantasized about a gluten free city too! And I am really enjoying this post because it's particularly relevant to me. I just ended a 3 and a half year relationship, and dating for the first time with celiac... well, it's an experience

I would love to date someone gluten free, but I've never met anyone. My ex was really really good. Washed his hands after he ate wheat, never brought it into the house, brushed his teeth and washed his face and waited before he kissed me. He wasn't perfect though, to get him there it took some fights and um, "training" ;)

Anyway the dating scene is weird. I learned if you meet someone and they don't take your allergy seriously they are probably not the best person to date. Also, the first time I met someone I wanted to kiss, I didn't tell him about my allergy until he leaned into kiss me after just having a gulp of beer! I sidestepped but I felt bad. Sooo now I tell them earlier.

This was also helpful to me after my experience:

    Open Original Shared Link

I also think that since wheat products are so crumbly that they should wash their faces too. But I am super super sensitive, so it might be okay for you. I just wanted to say that it is possible to date gluten eaters!

  10. Hi everyone

I live in Richmond BC, I have been gluten free since August 2006 after struggling with huge digestive problems, stunted growth as a child, depression as a teen and young adult, etc etc.

I hope I can help with Stylo and Miloandotis' sushi question. I am SUPER sensitive so keep that in mind. I have never encountered sushi rice that is a problem here, although when I was in Quebec they told me I could not eat sushi at all the restaurants I went to. It turned out the rice vinegar they use there contains barley malt. I suppose it's something that is common there and not so common here.

When I go out for sushi, I call beforehand and inform them of my allergy. When I am there an ask them to use a clean knife every time they cut my rolls and I ask about the wasabi and rice vinegar. I use Bragg's liquid aminos (pure fermented soy sauce) because it is less expensive than the wheat free soy sauce I can get here. I had a bad reaction to miso once so I don't do it. I used go to a sushi restaurant called Iki, on Broadway and MacDonald. If the owner of the restaurant is working (his name is Kyo) I feel really comfortable because he is quite knowledgeable.

I hope that helps you! Please feel free to ask anymore questions about Vancouver!

  11. Hi Alison,

I used them, and I started in December. They have really really helped me. I just got another order. I don't buy the CP-1 (50 billion) though, I buy the four strain (200 billion) and the bifido bacteria (400 billion) one. It costs me A LOT, but I was so, so sick before that it's totally worth the money for me.

I like the powder because I find if I empty them in my smoothies, they seem to have a greater effect on my well-being. Previous to this I was using Udo' choice high potency probiotics (74 billion) in my smoothies and that was helping a lot. That's why I decided to go with custom probiotics, I was asking myself if very high counts was what I needed to heal.

From all I've read, probiotics are a very personal thing. Different people do better with different strains and dosages. Custom probiotics seems to work fantastic for me though.

  12. Hi Wonka,

Sorry, I didn't notice your reply! I haven't tried Panne Rizo's brown rice flour. Do you like it? I ended up buying the super fine one Annalise Roberts suggests when I went to visit my brother in LA. good but expensive!

About Westpoint Naturals, they are extremely good at keeping allergens segregated. I am super sensitive (have to have a gluten free home), and I buy their products all the time without any problems. Just wanted to let you know because I use their products a lot!

    Bye for now!

  13. I really should have posted this awhile ago because I realized I had a cavity a couple of months back and began calling around for dentists. Everyone says they can't GUARANTEE their products are gluten free, but I'll "probably" be fine. The last girl I talked to kept telling me, "You don't actually swallow anything, so you can use our products even if they aren't gluten free." Arrg! I told her if I swallowed even a tiny bit I'd be really sick, but she acted like I was being crazy and just kept repeating herself.

Anyway, does anyone know of a dentist in the Lower Mainland or even on Vancouver Island that can guarantee their products are gluten free? I am super sensitive and also react quite badly to minute amounts of gluten.

That would be best, but I'd also be happy if anyone had a dentist whom they visited and DIDN'T have a reaction afterward in Vancouver BC.

    Thank you so much!

  14. I use Annalise Robert's recipes too and I ALWAYS had problems with it falling. However after some research I realized the humidity from the air was getting into my bread (I live in Vancouver, BC). I add a couple tablespoons more of flour than she calls for in the recipe. I also have made the focaccia bread and added 1 and a half teaspoons of gelatin and it was great!

I don't know what would happen if you add extra gelatin to the sandwich bread because I realized awhile ago I like the taste of the focaccia better and it is easier to make.

I just realized while I was writing this that mine was falling while it was IN the oven and I think you said yours was falling AFTER you take it out. Could it be that you're oven is not callibrated correctly and thus your bread is coming out before it's completely cooked?

My favorite bread to buy is from smaller bakeries like Panne Rizo or Montaintop (both only in Vancouver BC). I also really like Choices' brown rice bread but again, it's only available in BC. Do you have smaller gluten-free bakeries in your area? I find those are best since they are made on-site and locally, so they don't need so many preservatives.

  15. Wonka,

I live in Vancouver too, and I buy my millet flour at Choices, Capers or Save-on-foods (in the natural section). I bought some before at Famous foods, but I think I got glutened. I don't think they are so good at separating their flours.

The kind I buy at the other places is packaged by Westpoint Naturals and Bob's Red Mill, bith of which I've never had a problem with, and I'm quite sensitive.

The only thing I'm looking for in Vancouver now is extra-fine-grind Brown rice flour! Does anybody have any ideas?

  17. I bought Annalise Roberts' Gluten-free baking Classics and everything so far has been FANTASTIC! I was just wondering what out of her recipe book and Bette Hagman's "The Gluten Free Gourmet Bakes Bread" you have made that are also fantastic.

I hate wasting expensive ingredients and time on something that doesn't turn out delicious. I wasn't so keen on Annalise Roberts' breads but I think that's because she doesn't like rice flour in her breads and I love it.

I am buying Bette Hagman's book next so I am wondering which recipe to choose from it?

Here is what I've made in order from best to worst my rating and some comments to help if you buy Annalise Roberts' book

Carrot cake 10/10 - I think it's the best carrot cake I have EVER had. Some comments I got from wheat-eating people were were : " I don't even like carrot cake but this is SO GOOD" , "Umm.... are you going to make that carrot cake again soon?"(that one was repeated a few times) and " You are not missing ANYTHING with ordinary carrot cake"

Lemon cake 10/10 - " I think this is my new favorite cupcake" (from 16-year old cousin) "wow" , "you should make this again at christmas time". I had to make this twice because my boyfriend ate the ENTIRE TWO CAKES in 5 days. He left me one tiny piece, so that way he didn't "eat it all" arrggg... I was so mad. Also, I was confused because he barely weighs 150 pounds ;) .

Pizza crust - 10/10 After being turned off of pizza for more than a year thank's to Glutino's (maybe it was a bad one... maybe they always taste like cardboard), this pizza made me remember that I LOVE pizza. Grimm's peperoni on top somehow makes it shine more... I made a vegetarian one and it was not as delicious. Again, boyfriend ate 2 pizzas in one day. I havent shared this one with others yet.

Buttermilk doghnuts - 10/10 EVERYONE said they were better than timbits.... also I had a stomachache before I made them and after I ate them felt better (???) I am confused by this but every time I ate these I felt fantastic! For the buttermilk I soured rice milk with a little lemon and let it sit for 10 minutes.

Brownie 9/10 - Delicious! 2 people at school bought recipe book because I shared this with them

Banana nut muffins - 9/10 Boyfriend and I destroyed these

Chocolate fudge cake 9/10 - friend said " most satisfying chocolate cake" my friend had had in a long time

Chocolate doughnuts- 8/10 - good but not as good as the buttermilk ones

Foccacia 7.5-10 I liked it, people said it was "good", boyfriend said "okay"

French bread 7/10 - it was just decent

Sandwich bread 6.5/10 -- just too rich for me. I think I might be used to dry rice bread. Boyfriend didn't like it.

So, you don't need to go into as much detail as me, but what bread recipes did you like from Bette Hagman's books... or what other recipes did you find were 10/10 from Annalise Roberts'? I think I like rice breads (other flours mixed in okay) best! Thanks!
