ARCHIVED Do You Buy Grains?
no-more-muffins posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would like to buy some brown rice, sorhgum, millet and maybe some other grains to use in baking. If I grind them myself they will be fresher and healthier. I know that oats are commonly produced and grown near/with wheat. Is this a common problem with other grains? Does anyone ever buy grains in bulk? Where do you get them? -
ARCHIVED High Fructose Corn Syrup
no-more-muffins posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The more I read about dietary changes I need to make the more I worry about other food additivies and ingredients. I have been reading a lot about HFCS and I think it is bad stuff. Do you guys stay away from it? What brands of BBQ sauce, worchestershire and ketchup don't have it? Why is this country so messed up regarding food and nutrition? We are... -
ARCHIVED What Foods Are You Intolerant To?
no-more-muffins posted a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I know there are a lot of people out there who have problems with dairy, corn, soy etc. I am wondering what your intolerances/allergies are. Have you had testing for these or do you just know through trial and error? Even if you are only intolerant to gluten, please respond because I am trying to get a picture of how many people have multiple intolerances... -
I am glad to stumble on this thread. I have had problems with anxiety for the last several months and I hope that the magnesium and calcium supplement I take will help. And it is good to hear that the gluten-free diet helps as well. Right now i think I am having withdrawals from dairy so I have been having a big more anxiety right now. I have been gluten...

ARCHIVED Tired Of Doctors! Need Diagnosis
no-more-muffins replied to Kimberly1966's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you considered testing at www.enterolab.com? They have tests for gluten, dairy, soy, egg and yeast plus some others. A lot of people have found answers there. And you definitely need to try the diet for longer. Anxiety and gluten withdrawal symptoms are common (although annoying and uncomfortable). I read on another threat that anxiety can come... -
ARCHIVED Wal-mart Brand's "gluten Free" Labeling
no-more-muffins posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have been noticing that Wal-mart's "Great Value" brand has very clear labeling when products are gluten free. I just wondered if anyone had ever had reactions to any of the foods labeled "gluten free" by the "Great Value" brand. I am hoping that it is a trustworthy thing. It is SO nice to pick up a package of something and see the words "gluten free".... -
I feel the same way. I hope I am not driving all my family and friends bonkers with all my talk of gluten. I just know so many people who could be suffering bad symptoms from eating gluten, and I want them to be healthy. I guess you just have to be willing to speak up, but also willing to respect other people's opinions. It is definitely a fine balance...

I certainly don't profess to be an expert by any means or even a knowledgable person necessarily, but I can give you my experience. I never really have/had diarrhea or constipation, just some loose-ish stools. I think both of those things are normal with celiac. From your symptoms I can understand why you would be suspicious of celiac. I would be too...

I am going on my first cruise in 2 weeks. It sucks that I finally get to go but I can't eat much of the food. I have contacted the cruise company and notified them of my special diet. What is the best way to avoid gluten, cc and making a scene? I am going with my whole family and I want to be able to eat safely without making everything a huge...

ARCHIVED What Is The Point Of Diagnosis?
no-more-muffins replied to TotalKnowledge's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am the type of person who really wanted a diagnosis. I did all the testing and everything came back negative for me. (Blood and biopsy.) I was so sure I had celiac when I read about it. My symptoms totally matched. For me, trying the gluten-free diet was really the only thing I could do to potentially feel better. I think it is great if you can get a... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests Normal?
no-more-muffins replied to Desy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Both my blood and biopsies were normal. I am convinced that I have gluten intolerance though. I had many of the symptoms you have. I have been gluten-free for almost 3 weeks and some of my symptoms have gone away. If I were you I'd try the diet. Perhaps you would be interested in the testing that is done at www.enterolab.com. They don't test for celiac... -
ARCHIVED Why Is Everybody So Much Into "whole Wheat"
no-more-muffins replied to dream77's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My only idea about the whole wheat craze is that eating refined flour and simple carbs aren't as healthy as eating the whole grain. I agree with you though that wheat is definitely making a LOT of people sick. Our country is way too dependent on wheat. As anyone who is trying not to eat it knows, it is in EVERYTHING. I hope to see more gluten free stuff... -
ARCHIVED How Many People Are Actually Self-diagnosed?
no-more-muffins replied to no-more-muffins's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for sharing that article. It always gives me hope when I read that gluten sensitivity exists without showing signs of damage to the villi. I am so glad that some doctors are finally figuring it out. I just hope that the word will spread. There are a lot of sick people out there who could be so much healtier if they just knew what to do. -
ARCHIVED No Diagnosis Yet But Numbers Increasing
no-more-muffins replied to suzyq63's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't think you are stupid for being apprehensive. It is a difficult change to make at first. With her numbers going up like that I think it is just a matter of time before she is in the positive range. The earlier you catch it and make the change the better, and like the pp said, it could actually really help her behavior. It is worth it to give it... -
ARCHIVED Tortillas
no-more-muffins posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Corn tortillas have become a staple food for me. I wish I could find them in a bigger size though. Does anyone know of a brand of corn tortillas that are the size of regular flour tortillas? -
I am wondering if many of you experienced ups and downs after starting a gluten-free diet. At first I noticed some withdrawal symptoms and more fatigue. Then for a couple of days I started to feel better. Today I feel more sick again and more tired. Tell me this is normal. I am sure it probably is, I just need someone to tell me that. It was soooo good...

ARCHIVED Worth It?
no-more-muffins replied to bikingaway's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You MAY mess yourself up for the testing if you go gluten free but if you feel better eating no gluten then what is the point of testing anyway? To me, feeling better on the diet is as good or better (and cheaper) than any testing. Also, there are a lot of people who have used enterolab.com to help them diagnose gluten sensitivity. It won't tell you if... -
ARCHIVED How Many People Are Actually Self-diagnosed?
no-more-muffins replied to no-more-muffins's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It amazes me how many people are self-diagnosed. It is also amazing to me that we have all been so underserved by our doctors, many for years. At first I was hesitant to participate in this board because techincally, I don't have celiac. Neg blood and biopsy. It surprises me that so many people aren't "Gold standard" diagnosed, but we all fit in here... -
One of my very first symptoms when I started getting sick was insomnia. I just developed terrible insomnia, both being unable to fall asleep and waking up early in the morning. I have been using prescription sleep aids for a few months to help. At the beginning of my sickness I also developed depression and anxiety and I believe those were the underlying...

ARCHIVED Wheat Allergy Vs. Celiac Diseases
no-more-muffins replied to DPAZ's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It just really makes me scratch my head that drs would tell you to eat gluten so your intestines would be destroyed just so they could tell you you are intolerant to gluten. If you know you are intolerant to gluten, doesnt' that "count" just as much as if you actually have "celiac". To me it is the same and the thought of making oneself sick for months... -
I have heard that many celiacs are intolerant to milk (among other things). I think for me giving up cheese would be harder than the grains. I can substitute other things for wheat. But I don't think I can give up pizza (gluten-free of course) or cheese, ice cream etc. I am wondering how many of you are also intolerant to milk, and if you know if you...

ARCHIVED How Long Should You Try The Gluten Free Diet?
no-more-muffins replied to HelpinOhio's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'd definitely stay on it for the 3 months at least but I would also try either eliminating other common food allergens or do the allergen testing at enterolab. Milk (the protein casein) is a huge offender as is soy. Egg, yeast, corn, and other things are also common food allergens. If you are not getting better I'd try a food diary and an elimination... -
ARCHIVED Stool Test Positive!
no-more-muffins replied to jshelton999's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would say it probably wouldn't be worth it to test with enterolab not because of the same reasons as the pp but because you have already had blood results that were positive for all the things they test for. Your results would very likely be positive too and you would learn nothing. For people who dont' have any answers and get the run-around or the... -
ARCHIVED How Many People Are Actually Self-diagnosed?
no-more-muffins replied to no-more-muffins's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
"I think IBS is the most grandiose cop out to avoid taking the time to diagnose serious life-threatening conditions." To the pp who said this, I TOTALLY agree. IBS is just BS if you ask me. They say it is "functional" that it has no biological or chemical cause. That just proves that they are stupid because your body isn't just sick for no biological... -
ARCHIVED Wheat Allergy Vs. Celiac Diseases
no-more-muffins replied to DPAZ's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I personally wouldn't waste the money on the scope. I think that the idea of a gluten challenge is just totally unnecessary. If you know you don't tolerate wheat and it makes you totally sick, why eat it just so a dr. can stick a scope down your throat and POSSIBLY find celiac? I had an endo a couple of weeks ago and all the tests were normal. I just...
