  1. Maybe make felt gingerbread people and decorate them instead?
  2. It just seems with so many kids with food issues in the class baking is just a poor choice of activity. There are hundreds of other activities that pre-schoolers could do as a class. They can make bubbles, collages, finger paint. Even with cooking they could make things like apple sauce or sorbet that don't need flour or egg substitutes. You still have to...
  3. I have been thinking about this more with everyone's responses and for me the main issue is that I need to trust that the adults in my child's life will take this seriously and follow my instructions and not try to countermand them or make me feel like I am too protective. In our case, we decided that a simple one sentence rule - she will only eat food she...
  4. The teacher brings it up repeatedly as the prime example of something that my kid should be responsible for communicating to her. It is used as the example of how she is not an 'independent learner'. I think if she was diabetic for example no one would have an expectation like that. Even a super 'independent' kid shouldn't be responsible for communicating...
  5. This is the correspondence I had with the school on the first day. I met with the teacher and the school nurse the week before. In our discussion we decided that the teacher would send any recipes to me to review before she ate anything at school. I sent this to the school nurse two days later as a follow up. I deleted the actual names. The teacher was new...
  6. Thanks I really appreciate the support.
  7. I did go to the principal and since the school has a strict no food sharing policy because of food allergies and I believe she made the teacher stop the baking. I believe this is why the teacher is pissed and brings it up every time we have a conversation. She brought up the baking at the curriculum night and told everyone how much the children loved it an...
  8. My daughter is ten and in fifth grade. I met with her teacher before school started about how to handle celiac in school. At the meeting she said that she would like to bake with the class and I said I would think about it. I called the GI department at Children's, talked it over with my daughter, and my sister who's son has celiac. All three said it wasn...
  9. My daughter has celiac and my sister's son has celiac. My sister, her other daughter, my aunts, her husband, and I have have all tested negative and have been asking our parents for years to get screened. My dad has been very sick and finally agreed to ask to be tested/screened and has seen dozens of doctors since he has been in the emergency room and hospitalized...
  10. Hi Stephanie, I recently found these things because my daughter's teacher wants to try to bake gluten-free foods at school. My daughter decided it made her too nervous, so I told them today that she will only eat things from home. 11. We found out a few months ago. The doctor told us the + celiac blood tests are 94-97% accurate - so there is about a one in twenty chance it's something else besides celiac when you have a positive blood test. The doctors felt really strongly about getting the biopsy to confirm celiac. There are some very rare liver and pancreatic problems that they tested...
  12. Whole foods gluten-free bakery makes a very dark chewy gluten free ginger/molasses cookie. However it is something like $7.99 for only 6 of them. does anyone have a good recipe for these? I tried one from Joy of cooking with gluten-free flour but they were neither chewy nor dark brown. Thanks,
  13. We found out a few months ago that my daughter has celiac. Her blood tests and biopsy were both positive. We went to three different pediatric GI doctors and I found that they weren't nice or helpful until we got one that specializes in celiac. I think many general practice pediatric GIs have out of date and misinformation. Try to move your biopsy up sooner...
  14. We were just there. There are a couple of bakeries I wanted to try but didn't have time for. Open Original Shared Link : looks yummy! 15. I am still trying to figure it out. Last Friday night I went to a goodbye party for a co-worker and we fed my daughter first and she brought a really gooey cupcake so she would have something. She was perfectly happy. The party was mostly adults. At the party his wife was super worried about not having food for her and kept offering. "Oh we have ice cream...
  16. Best to contact Johnson & Johnson customer service. They should have a toll free number on the label and a website. Open Original Shared Link
  17. Thanks for all the advice. For me and her, the social part has been the hardest. She is really good about the diet and has been a real trooper. She is super determined to get better and stronger and is extremely careful about what she eats. At home we have the routine down. We have created gluten-free substitutes for most favorites. It is when we are...
  18. This keeps happening. We are invited out to a gathering of my friends/co-workers. I tell them that my daughter needs her own food and we will bring it with us. Friend explains patiently "Oh, there will be plenty of things she can eat that don't contain gluten. Don't worry." I don't take the chance and bring her own food anyhow - feeling a little rude in some...
  19. We tried pizza crust but what seems to work best for us is to get a slice of gluten free sandwich bread (we use whole foods one) and spread some pizza sauce and sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top and put in the toaster oven for 10 minutes. We also like the gluten-free pantry and 365 pizza crust mixes for something more elaborate.
  20. Children's Hospital Boston celiac support group has some good resources for school. Open Original Shared Link You should probably get a letter from your doctor and then meet with the principal, school nurse, and teacher and write up a 504 plan and a careplan. It's important to have that in place because the teacher may be out sick or at a meeting. The...
  21. Why a clear diet and miralax. My daughter was scoped and she just had to not eat anything after midnight?
  22. We are traveling to rural Minnesota this weekend. I contacted the local celiac support group person from Red River Celiacs that I found by an internet search of Minnesota and Celiac. She recommended a local restaurants that she eats at and was really helpful. She is even going to leave some baked goods for my daughter in the church kitchen. When I looked...
  23. My nephew was diagnosed and it took two years for his tests to return to normal. He sees a celiac specialist at Children's Hospital Boston and it is normal for it to take that long. It sounds like she is doing better and that maybe your GI isn't all that knowledgeable about celiac specifically - especially since he advised you it was OK to cheat every now...
  24. My daughter was diagnosed a month ago and I fell apart. I worried about her dating (She is 10) and all kinds of other things. Food is such a huge part of any social gathering. Trying to keep it away from a toddler is rough. They put everything in their mouths. I had to take her away from her best friends birthday party in tears when they served the cake about...
