  1. Don't be frightened,it's just another diet to get used to and the chances of cancer of very minimal. My mom has it too. There is medication called protonix, or PPI's that help Barretts alot. The only problem with my mom is that she is allergic to all the PPI's, she gets diabetes insipidus from it. We are actually trying to find out if it is because she has...
  2. Happy birthday and may God bless you today!

  3. I'm planning an X-mas gift for my ma and want to give her something useful. Whenever we make gluten-free bread it's all lumpy and shapeless and kinda hard to make sandwiches with. So I was looking into getting a breadmaker, I figured it would make it easier...anyways, I was just wondering, is there really a difference between gluten free breadmakers and just...
  4. OK totally ignore my previous post, I was displaying my ignorance between DM and DI. Well my mom did have DI, but it was medication related, she stopped taking the meds and we noticed a difference within DAYS. So I dunno if you are taking any meds, my mom was on PPI's for her Barretts and now she obviously cannot take them so we are looking into surgry. Anyways...
  5. My mom is having the same exact symptoms. I began to suspect Diabetes because she's having the 3 P's: Polyuria, Polyphagia, and Polydipsia. But, it's the same thing, everytime they check her blood sugar levels, it's normal. She's been on and off sick lately and I highly doubt she has been glutened. I didn't think of Diabetes Insipidus though, but that is...
  6. Hello all! I am nursing student as well, currently am a PCT but am taking some time off of school for my RN. My mom has celiac, whereas I am just having a sensitivity to gluten. I eat gluten free though, in hopes of avoiding getting celiac. My mom was sick while I was in school, and it was really bad. My job wouldn't let me take a leave of absence so I switched...
  7. Thank you very much! I didn't think there was but I told my mom I would ask. I couldn't find out too much info online so that's why I tried here, everyone is always so helpful. I like your screen name it's cute! I have a turtle but he is more homicidal than anything! I have never seen such a greedy thing! lol
  8. Trying to find out what brands of these are gluten free. My mom is super sensitive and we are now realizing that we have to question EVERYTHING, and my dad isn't gluten free. My brother is moving out in a month and then we are making the household completely gluten free. (don't ask me why, my brother won't go along with the diet, regardless of my mother's...
  9. Well I am currently working at Wal-Mart (much to my displeasure, but hey it's a job) and I am a cashier, so I see a lot of the products that everyone buys. It is relatively new as far as I know, but for some reason Wal-mart is carrying more gluten free products and promoting them. I think it is kind of ironic, but probably just more of a coincidence, that...
  10. Omg...this is totally weird!! I have problems swallowing sometimes but only with drinking, not with food. I am actually having it now, it feels as if there is a bubble in my throat and nothing can relieve it. I don't have celiac but I do have a problem with gluten so I eat gluten free. The doctors have always contributed my difficulty swallowing to my smoking...
  11. Well just wanted to bring this out there, my mom has a problem with fruits and veggies that are not organic so I thought some other people might, but I guess it's not a big concern to anyone else. Although it is gross.
  12. "Conventionally grown fruits and vegetables are often waxed to prevent moisture loss, protect them from bruising during shipping, and increase their shelf life. When purchasing non-organic fruits and vegetables, you should ask your grocer about the kind of wax used on their surface even if you are going to peel it; CARNAUBA wax (from the carnauba palm tree...
  13. I found it on the FDA's website Open Original Shared Link It says: # Are there examples of food products that are naturally "gluten-free"? Yes. The following are examples of, but are not limited to, foods that are naturally gluten-free: * milk; nonfat dry milk) * 100 percent fruit or vegetable juices * Fresh fruits and vegetables...
  14. but I just found out that the wax they put on fruits and veggies MAY contain gluten, they cannot guarantee that it doesn't. I always wash fruits and veggies, as I am sure many do, but I don't know for those who are super sensitive, like my mom, may want to go organic. My mom only eats organic fruits/veggies now, and I just found out about this. Sorry if this...
  15. Thanks everyone! I have always wanted to try the honey with the comb still in it...I think you eat it or something....maybe? lol
  16. We are trying to find a good honey to eat, all honey is good for you but I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for more organic honey or anything.
  17. Thanks everyone. We tried to have the household go all gluten free and my dad is ok with it, he will eat anything put in front of him but my brother is on his own diet so...I'm not super sensitive but my mom is, that's why I was wondering. We went ahead and bought some new pans today. It's so weird, like all this stuff I wouldn't normally think of, we have...
  18. yes, you said cream of buckwheat on another post of mine, and I forgot to say thanks for that because my mom got some and she says it does help a load. She has been putting organic apples in the rice (gross!) but I will tell her to try other things, like we have organic zucchini. I think what her problem may be is nightshade. I have been seeing that a lot...
  19. OK, so we are new at this and I was just wondering, for cooking and baking, does my family need to get a whole new set of pots and pans? My mom and I are gluten free but my father and brother aren't. Is it okay too cook with the same pots and pans as long as they have been properly cleaned? And if so, what is the best thing to clean them with?
  20. Well that definitely explains it!!! I just need to know though how my mom can get some nourishment. Right now she is just eating rice and organic apples and rice milk. It seems that is all she can tolerate at the moment, and despite the fact that she eats a lot of it, she is still losing weight. She was badly glutened, and it is taking her a long time to...
  21. So, my mother and I have realized that we are just on the tip of the iceberg here and have a looong way to go, and a helluva lot more to learn. Apparently my mom is allergic to soy as well, which I saw is not uncommon, but we noticed another interesting symptom today. My mom tends to get nauseous after she eats meat. It took a couple times for us to notice...
  22. Hi Sylviaann, it is nice to know there is someone in the tampa area who can relate. We are in New Tampa, off of Bruce B Downs. My mom is also super sensitive, we have decided to go organic because since she is still getting sick. Today is an exceptionally bad day, we have spoken to three of our doctors who are basically saying my mom is paranoid and is making...
  23. I just want to thank you all very much for you wonderful advice! We felt so terribly alone with this and it is so nice to hear kind words and similar experiences. I'm sure a lot of you felt the same way at first. We have found a support group in Tampa so we plan on contacting them, I think it will be a great comfort to my mom to interact with other celiac...
  24. Thank you so very much!!! It's greatly appreciated. My mom was talking as well about seeing an endocrinologist. Is that a helpful thing to do when you have celiac?
  25. Obviously, as many of you know and have experienced, becoming gluten free is a major lifestyle change. I am allergic to gluten as well, but since I found out recently, I have not developed Celiac, and with becoming gluten free now, I have hopes to prevent it. But we are new to this, and almost 2 weeks ago my mom accidentally consumed gluten. She has been...
