Trying to understand and spread the word about the correlation between infertility and Celiac Disease. I plan to tell all my doctors, contact everyone I can, preach it on my blog, tell whoever will listen- TEST for celiac disease if you are not getting pregnant.

About Me

-Started TTC 4 yrs ago on my 30th bday. Unexplained infertility. 7 IVFs with my own eggs, 3 more IVFs with either donor eggs, surrogate or both.

-4 miscarriages including a devastating one at 20 weeks.

-Dx with Celiac Disease via bloodwork, endoscopy, biopsies, gene panel, January, 2010.

-Was told this was why we lost our son at 20 weeks; told to go gluten free asap and try again in 6 months.

-Very active in the infertility world, have lobbied in DC twice for infertility healh insurance, adoption tax credit, etc.

-celiac disease testing will now be my new crusade. If fertility docs test for other autoimmune diseases in their workups, WHY are they not testing for this??

  1. I'm not really a baker so I love anything that I can make that comes from a box! Last year I used the pumpkin bread mix from Trader Joe's which was a HUGE hit, but that was before I was diagnosed and actually could eat it. I'd like to make another pumpkin bread this year, but I've yet to see a gluten free bread mix. Does anyone have any suggestions for one...
  2. Yep, celiac 100% affects fertility. They aren't sure why, but it does, and whenever you read a list of possible things Celiac can do to your body, infertility is always on the list. I had unexplained infertility for fours years, 10 IVFs and 4 miscarriages until diagnosed last year. And 5 months later- we are newly pregnant. It's a good idea to check for...
  3. I'm happy to call them Monday morning and get the low down and write back here!
  4. Thanks Reba! Every time I do another IVF, they take thyroid blood levels and it always is normal (I've done a ton of IVFs). Hmmm, so I don't think it's the thyroid causing the nail straitions, breakage and weakenss....Interesting, I am going to assume it HAS to be the C.D. But if anyone out there has nails similair to mind, I am all ears, so thank you...
  5. About 7 years ago pre-dx, I noticed that my once strong, very nice nails started to get softer and two especially started to flatten out and get these odd vertical striations on them. Also, the white "moons" on almost all the nails are large and misshapen. I am going to assume this is an affect of the malnurishment we get from having celiac disease, but I...
  6. Thank you SO much, everyone! I have an appointment tomorrow with the nutrionist at the Columbia's Celiac Center, and I plan on asking her this question. I can report back here with what she says, if you like!! Sunshine
  7. I just voted yes- I always did, always hated it! But I have nice hair at least, so that makes up for it. I gasped when I read your post bc I always made fun of my forehead!!
  8. I keep reading on here that we need to watch our lipstick, our chapstick, our lotions, our shampoos, etc. I've read the lables of all the things I use and it just sounds like a chemcial factory! I buy whatever shampoo at a drugstore, lotions on my (chronically dry and cold) hands from the drugstore although the Kiehls brand is the one that works the best...
  9. Not sure if this helps, but I was first diagnoised via a bloodtest at my GP's office and right away went to Columbia's center. I had already done the Entero test and came clutching those results to show my doctor. She didn't even look, as she said it doesn't help her, since it is a private lab and basically the main doctor there determines his own standards...
  10. On another forum I visit, I use the PM service a lot, and I would like to have other members be able to PM me. Not sure if they can do that by simply clicking on my username, but I see that othes have a little "envelope" icon below their name that you can click that takes you directly to a PM pop-up screen. I looked all over the control panels for an option...
  11. wishes I knew I had celiac disease before the 10 IVFs and 4 miscarriages....

  12. Hi Angela! As someone (only 33) who has "unexplained" infertility and endured 10 IVFs (7 with my own eggs, the rest some combo of donor eggs and a surroagte) and 4 m/c, inlcuding a devastating one at 20 weeks, I am very interested in learning more of this Mayo clinic study. I was recenlty dx with celiac disease via blood panel, edoscopy, biopsy, gene panel...
  13. Not sure if this helps, but I too have one copy of the MTHFR gene (although homocystine levels ok.) I was tested after my 1st miscarriage (via IVF #1, have done 8 IVFs all together due to unexplained infertility, now I know it's Celiac.) He told me to go on Folgard and a baby asprin before we started the next IVF round since the gene affects how my body aborbs...
  14. Testing! I hope someone on here can explain why a doctor recommends waiting 6 months and/or if healing starts as soon as you stop eating gluten or is there a specific, known time period that healing begins to start in the body? Thanks everyone in advance!
  15. Hello! I am so excited to have found this board! I have the classic celiac disease symptoms and saw my first GI at the age of 13; I am now 33. DH and I started trying to have a baby when I turned 30 and nothing happened. We've been to 6 fertility clinics, and have done a total of 11 IVF's, including 3 with donor eggs and 2 with a gestational carrier because...
