Maui has 2 health food stores that I know of. One is on the main road leading out of the airport heading toward the other side of the island. The other is in Lahaina. They have pre-made dishes for dine-in or carryout.
Also, there is a Kobe steak house in Lahaina as well as the places Jen mentioned. Over in Kahana there is an Outback Steak House and, I know there is an sushi place over in Kapalua.
Enjoy your trip!

I had Celiac & cheating explained to me this way.........It's like trying to say that someone is a little pregnant. You either are or you aren't. If you cheat you won't heal and it just opens the doors to a variety of other problems.
It's tough at the beginning but it does get easier. Hang in there!

I posted this info on the forum talking about Bard's beer being recalled....
I found a Chinese beer being imported into the Cleveland Area that is made from Black Rice....Yinpu Beer. The local health food store where I shop turned me onto this in substitute for the Bard's which is off the shelves right now. I Bought and drank a 6-pack of it this past weekend and had no adverse effects.
They have a website (although it doesn't mention anything related to Celiac) but you can look for yourself @ www.yinpubeer.com

The name of the beer is Yinpu. It is being imported into the Cleveland area and was even featured in an article printed in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The article didn't mention anything associated with Celiac but the manager at the health food store where I shop is selling it as an alternative to Bards.
You can visit their website at www.yinpubeer.com

P.S. I drank a 6-pack of it over the weekend and no adverse effects (Hiccup!)

If I could get thru an endoscopy than anybody can!
I am a lousy patient. I'm not kidding. I get woozy and nearly pass-out from needles/blood draws/IV's, etc. It really isn't that bad of a procedure. The worst part is the gas pains and the sore throat the next day.
Hang in there & best of luck!

I was told by a manager at the Mustard Seed in Solon that Bard's recalled their beer because of over-fermentation which caused the bottles to explode.
He did show me a Chinese Black Rice Beer they carry which I bought and it was okay. It took a little getting used to but it was half the price of Bard's so I'll live with it.

I think that diagnosis is S.O.P. for Dr's today.....It's what they did with me, too.
I was the one who insisted after 3-months to try something else and the endiscopy showed the damaged villi. Blood work followed and viola......Celiac Disease.
Best of luck!

Potato's O'Brien....
Red Skin Potato's....
New Potato's....
Fingerling Potato's....
Hawaiian (Purple) Potato's (Special Occassions Only Please)....
Parsley Potato's....
Twice Baked Potato's....

I'm watching the Food Network the other night and they were doing a show all about Donuts. Boy, talk about hitting below the belt! it was real hard to sit there and watch all those Krispy Kreme Donuts and think I may never enjoy them again
So it got me to thinking (Can you smell the smoke?).......What if you were granted a wish and could eat whatever you wanted for one day with no side effects? What would your top three choices be?
Here's mine:
(1) Little Debbie Nutty Bars (Sniffle, Sniffle)
(2) Giradanno's Deep Deep Pizza from Chicago (And Don't Forget The Beer!)
(3) Double Stuff Oreo's & A Glass of Ice-Cold Whole Milk to dunk them into.
Let's hope this miracle gluten-free pill that is rumored to be in the works become a reality so we can go back to enjoying some old favorites.
Thanks For Playing!

P.S. GO TRIBE!!!!!!!!

I apologize if this question has been asked before......Does anyone know if Crest White Strips (The things you put on your teeth to brighten them up a bit) are Gluten Free?
I have a box at home and was wondering if they would "Get me"
Thanks!

Tinkyada pasta is the best that I have tasted. Look in your local grocery store's organic section (If available) as you should find it there.
The shopping can be overwhelming at first but it does get easier. You will learn what taste's good and what is a good price for items as time goes by.
Hang In There!

Personally I opt for the Turkey Bacon. It has less overall junk in it (Especially MSG) and is better than eating pork. But, I also understand to each his/her own.

This happened to me a few times. Especially when I was pre-diagnosed and now after I get glutened. I believe it to be the result of gas backing up the digestive track because of poorly digested foods (I was checked out on the Halter monitor to make sure it wasn't cardiac related). I also suffered a few panic attacks in the beginning which got the old ticker beating pretty good.
After being gluten-free for a while the symptoms have gone away for me and I'm starting to ween myself off the heartburn meds as well. I think it just takes time for some real healing to occur and hopefully your husband will see less symptoms as time goes by.
Best of Luck!

Jen,
This happens all the time. I've been gluten-free for 9-months now and I still go up-and-down with the symptoms. Everyone is different blah, blah, blah....you know the drill by now. I'm hoping that as time goes by and my intestine's heal more that I can live without celiac disease occupying my EVERY THOUGHT. That being said I honestly don't believe I'll ever be without some celiac disease related symptoms going on so I just try to make the best of it.
Best of Luck!

Broncobux,
I will be heading to LV in a few months so the list is greatly appreciated....Thanks!
Firegirl,
One thing I do when I travel is to request from the hotel a mini-fridge for my room. That way I can then go to the local health food store and buy some gluten-free supplies to keep me going (Fruit, Crackers, Cheese, Lunch Meat, Chips, Cereal, Almond Milk, etc.)
Best of Luck!

Rogue,
I had the back-tingle. It was an almost everyday occurence and it drove me nuts trying to figure it out. All I know is that it went away after I went gluten-free (Not right away) and some healing took place. Now I only get it when I have a Gluten episode.
Best of Luck!

Jen,
What a great question!
I think with this disease it's too easy to focus on the negative. We can't eat this anymore and I'm feeling lousy because I ate that, etc. Lord only knows how much brain energy I've spent this past year constantly thinking about my health.
My postives are:
I am eating healthier......
I am exercising regularly......
I went to the doctor for the 1st time in over 20-years......
And I've met a lot of great people
here on this forum who know how I feel.......
I've always been an optimist my whole life but, this past year I found myself with a real negative attitude because of the many questions regarding my health. Having celiac disease has taught me to be more appreciative of the many gifts I have in my life (Wife, Kids, Family, Home, Friends, Etc.) and give thanks for those gifts.
Hope you have an awesome vacation.

Home-made salsa is real easy to make and taste's better anyways.....
Salsa Recipe:
In a food processor start with 4-5 garlic cloves and a large onion. Add in your pepper(s) of choice (How many peppers? It depends on how hot you like your salsa and what type of pepper you use?). If you like it hot add the seeds. If not then omit them. Chop well. Add in your Cilantro (as much or little as you like) and tomato's (I like using Roma tomato's). Chop well. Add 1/2 fresh squeezed lemon (or lime juice), salt & pepper to taste. Mix well.
I usually add a few hand-chopped tomato's and a little more onion at the end to give my salsa a chuncky texture. Becasue the salsa doesn't contain any preservatives it only lasts for about 24-hours before it starts to sour. You can freeze this salsa for up to 6-months in a closed air-tight container.
Enjoy!

P.S. This salsa is great on scrambled eggs!!!!!

Jen,
Each person is different in their reaction but I usually feel better if I take a walk. It helps get my mind off how I feel when I can enjoy the sunshine, hear the crickets, etc.
When I really feel lousy I take Pepto Bismol for some relief.
Best of Luck!

Jen,
I take Proactazyme Plus from Nature's Sunshine with my meals. I also take liquid Iron and Liquid B vitamins as well. Finally, I too drink lots of water each day.
Best of Luck & Happy Labor Day!

When I feel lousy I usually try and go for walks to get my mind off how I feel. I also like to listen to jazz or other light music and sleep as much as possible. Finally I rely heavily on my natural magnet belt to ease my aches & pains associated with the bloating etc.

My wife and I have handed out Neon Glow-Sticks/Bracelets the past 3-years instead of candy. The kids absolutely love them and they serve a safety purpose as well while the kids are walking around in the dark. Not to mention that you can get a tube of 100 for about $10.00 versus spending more money on candy.

I visited The Flying Apron in Seattle this summer while on vacation (It's near the University of Washington Campus). It's a really (and I mean really) tiny place where you just walk up to the window and order your items. The whole place can't be more than a small bedroom in overall size.
The best item they had in my opinion was the berry scone. The chocolate chip cookies etc. that I ate were like "Gut Bombs". They were very dense and just felt like a brick in my stomach after eating. It was nice however to go somewhere and have the ability to buy a variety of things without worrying about how they were made or cross contamination, etc.
A definite must do for any Celiac visiting Seattle.

Gastritis And Cd?
in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Posted
Add me to the list of celiac disease & Gastritis people. I have been gluten-free for 10-months and still have unexplained issues with food that I know is gluten-free. Between trying to figure out other possible allergies, being gluten-free and having gastritis it has been very frustrating.
Best of luck to you,
Cleveland Bob
