  1. Hi Patrick, I havn't been back on line until today. Life got too busy over the weekend as usual! I agree, I make no excuses about the disease. I don't sugar coat it either. I think that as soon as you call it a DISEASE and explain that it is just as seroius as MS that right away everyone gets it. Everyone knows what MS is, so when you associate...
  2. Hi curiousifcd, I havn't been back on line until today, life got too busy! We have found that ALOT of salad dressings are not gluten free. Too many of them have modified food starch, or wheat starch in them. Like you said it's soo difficult when you can't see a label. I would probably suspect that the cafeteria dressings are probably not gluten...
  3. curioisifcd, You don't have to have all, or any, or even one of the normal symptoms of a disease to have it. for instance the normal symptoms for celiac disease is weight loss with maybe hypErthyroidism, I actually had weight gain and hypOthyroidism (where the thyroid slows down.) As soon as I went gluten-free I lsot 25 punds over a 9 month period without...
  4. Hi curiousifcd, My daughter is a celiac and goes to the University of Maryland. She had huge problems with the cafeteria. She's doing much better now that she is in an apartment and can control the cooking of her own food. She has discovered that a crock pot is invaluable and has become a pretty great cook. Find out if the cafeteria puts MSG or potatoe...
  5. Katie, guess what? I just googled it and there is now a Sephora at Columbia mall. If you have never been there you should check it out. It is our favorite mall in the area. Great stores. Have fun Wendy
  6. Hi Katie, There's a Sephora at Montgomery mall in Maryland and at Tysons corner in Virginia. Montgomery mall would be close enough for you to get to. Wendy
  7. Hi curiouifcd, With all the family symptoms, related disorders, and diagnosises of IBS I would encourage my family members to get checked for celiac disease. It sounds like a high probability. I also though that you might want to get checked for hypethyroid (Grave's disease). The shakiness and weaknes, panic attacks, heart palpitaions all sounds like...
  8. The best lowcarb diet is one that is not intended to be low carb. What do I mean? Don't go low carb, just eat whole foods. If you eat a diet rich in fruits and especially green veggies, (green LEAFY vegies all the better) you WILL loose weight. Drink a glass of 1% milk when you feel hungry outside of mealtime or get a craving (not skim, ...
  9. You could try getting a childs cookbook, read it with him, have him choose what he wants to make and make it with him. I'll bet he would be so proud of his own creations that he might eat it and decide that it's good. let me know how it goes. Wendy
  10. Maybe it was because I was soooo sick and the change is evident, but I have not had one person respond to me like I'm crazy or just on some"fad" diet. One of the things I almost immediatly explain is that... "it is an autoimmune disease like lupus or MS. When I eat gluten, my body responds to it like it's poison. Antibodies are sent out to destroy...
  11. these are so funny, some bring tears to my eyes. You might be a celiac if... You drive past a huge, incredibly gorgeous, bright green, lush field wheat and say, "oh look, hundreds of acres of poison!" Wendy
  12. Hi Wandering Hermit, Welcome The question about how much gluten is too much? I agree with Katie, accidents happen but try not to make them worse. Also...I feel that it's not really the "amount" of accidental gluten to worry about, it's the effects of it and how long those effects take to wear off. You will notice that the longer you are gluten free...
  13. Hi Jeff, I too, like everone else on this thread, suffer from joint pain (it used to be crippling at times) and extreme muscle pain. My left elbow bothers me sooooo much. It used to feel like it was constantly broken. The skin on the eblow feels very tender like I have a rug burn or something, although nothing is noticible. I would get shooting pains...
  14. This idea is so cool. Last night I was watching a show called (I think) 'medical mysteries'. True story about a man who kept ending up in the emergency room doubled over with excruciating stomache pain, tingling in his arms and legs numbness in his hands and feet, extremem fatigue, loss of memory, blurred vision. I can't remember what else. (symptoms...
  15. I have small white spots like reverse freckles on my arms also. My dermatologist said they are just sun damage, that anyone at any age can get them but mostly fair people as they age. I don't know if that's the same thing that you have? The white flecks in the fingernails are not specifically linked to celiacs, they are due to malnutrition. In countries...
  16. Hi Stephanie, I know what you mean about pills! It weems like all doctors want to do is give us a "magic pill". I swear, Doctors don't want us to get well or cured because then they would have no more patients, and at the first sign of illness, insurance companies just want us to die so they don't have to pay for treatment. It's all nuts isn...
  17. Hi Stephanie, Thanks for the great response. This is the first day I have been on line since last thurs. I can't wait for my daughter to read all this. Everything you wrote, about the rain clouds, the heaviness, the lethargy, the inability to concentrate, the forgetting words, or what you are talking about, going from zero to furious in seconds......
  18. Hi Lynne, When I had my allergist appointment last week I asked the same question. I said it's very difficult figuring out all this intollerance versus allergy stuff. He did explain it to me, but it was pretty technical (at least to me) I guess I would go on the internet to get a better understanding if I was you. It has to do with the bodies...
  19. Stephanie, I'm so glad you wrote this response. I have been trying to get my daughter to go gluten-free or at least cut down on wheat products for the last year now. She keeps saying she refuses. She is so unbelievably addicted to bready starches. I have to beg her sometimes to eat fruit and vegetables but it seems all she ever wants is starch. I...
  20. Hi Missy, My youngest daughter was missdiagnosed about 8 years ago with ADD. After years of suffering terrible mood swings, she started cutting, that's when we realized it was something more than ADD. A phychiatrist spoke with us only a few minutes before he realized the proper diagnoses. She has been on proper meds. since and is doing great....
  21. Hi aaascr, Oh,Oh,OH, HOHO,OH, I can't believe that ibuprofin has corn in it AHHHHH! and Xantham gum is in everything ARGHHH! Isn't this just sooooo frustrating? Maybe your right. Here's me...I ache so bad, so I take large amount. of Ibu. which if it has corn in it, results in making the situation worse. What do you take if you...
  22. Hi Del, I guess I should add chronic muscle pain, restless leg syndrom, and severe sleeplessness to the list in case you have any of this too. Wendy
  23. Hi Del, I'm not sure we have the same problems in common. When I went off gluten all my digestive problems cleared up and have never come back! I thank God every night for allowing me to enjoy living another day instead of days spent begging to die when the stomache attacks would happen, or spending every living moment in such severe joint and...
  24. Thanks for your quick answer Tiffany I guess when we are sick all the time we want to know why! Isn't it so frustrating? Would'nt that be a good reason for flare ups though? I guess I find myself searching so often because it drives me crazy not knowing why. I mean I try so hard to do everything right to stay completley away from gluten, corn...
  25. So...tell me what you guys think, I know that toxins can be stored in fat cells. If you lose weight and those fat cells break down, those toxins can be released into the body. What about gluten? If it can be stored in our fat cells also, then can we have problems when we lose weight? I was diagnosed a celiac about a year ago. I also found...
