  1. People with gluten intolerance almost always have the HLA-DQ2 and (or) DQ8 genetic markers. Absence of both of these makers indicated a very low chance of having Celiac or DH. Their presence indicated a greater potential of Celiac than for the general populace. Celiac panel blood test is a very good idea; make sure he is being glutened for some weeks...
  2. I've been gluten-free since September (flu and then high stress) and love to cook. So much of gluten-free cooking is better than with gluten-full stuff. gluten-free breading on fried things doesn't absorb oil and water as much and stays crunchy. I run gluten-free breads that collapse through a food processor; they still make good crumbs or croutons. Some...
  3. I had a symmetrical rash on the insides of my calves, back, and sometimes arms for about 40 years. Looked like small water blisters and were incredibly itchy. Only things that helped were heavy-duty hydrocordisone cream and clothes that did not rub the rash. Even with snow outside I would wear shorts. I have shown the rashes to doctors over the decades...
  4. My health was pretty good until Sept. 09, usual degradation of body parts with my advancing age. Underachieving thyroid. Early Sept. I caught the flu and a few days later a very stressful event. A week or two later the GI and arthritis. I have quite a few symptoms of DH and Celiac, but all the tests diagnosed only minor reflux.

  5. Thank you and the others for such great advice. It is good feeling that I am not alone. I won't bother to go to that GI again, although he was good at finding out that I had no other GI problems. I think we give medical doctors too much credit and some of them have attitudes. I think a PhD telling the GI that she is 90% sure she has Celiac was enough...
  6. Thank you. That is great advice, and it feels good to know I'm not alone. My husband is very supportive and he and my regular doctor believe me. Funny, I'm finding restaurants and menu items that I can eat. Went out for phad thai and my husband wasn't along. He missed it so that I made some for him. I guess even those that can eat gluten miss some foods...
  7. My doctor said coffee, even decaffeinated, can relax the esophageal sphincter and increase acid reflux. It also seems to have an effect on IBS such that it encourages food to move through the digestive track at a faster pace. Perhaps you are either having problems with contamination or cross-contamination of gluten, or the coffee is causing GI problems...
  8. Thank you for your reply. It has been interesting going gluten-free. I'm getting better at voicing my needs at restaurants and baking breads and such (even the breads that collapse make good crumbs and stuffing). I don't think I will go through the endoscopy again, 1 week of being sick on gluten was enough. I'm a scientist and it would have been good...
