ARCHIVED Please Sign This Petition For gluten-free Girl Scout Cookies!
Gardening replied to Gardening's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Takala, the petition is for a cookie free of the top 8 allergens and also gluten-free. This way, one cookie would cover not only the celiacs, but also the peanut-allergic children, and anyone else sensitive to the top 8 - including soy. So many families have multiple children with food allergies to different things - it gets to tricky and limiting! It... -
ARCHIVED Please Sign This Petition For gluten-free Girl Scout Cookies!

KarenG, ITA, they will need another bakery to make them. Maybe Enjoy Life would contract out, since they are already a gluten-free, nut-free facility. -
ARCHIVED Please Sign This Petition For gluten-free Girl Scout Cookies!
Gardening posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A girl scout troop has started an online petition for Girl Scouts to come up with a gluten-free allergen-free cookie. Currently, the two baking companies for GS say there isn't enough of a market for them. There are SO many little girl scouts with celiac, gluten sensitivity, or other allergies (peanut, egg, etc) who can't eat the cookies they are asked... -
ARCHIVED If You Get Glutened Friday Night, You Feel The Effects ________
Gardening replied to Gardening's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you for all your feedback. Just to complicate issues My 5 year old woke up with belly pain last night. Felt like she was going to throw up in the morning, then it went away. By 1pm, she had thrown up at a friend's house. Felt naseous the rest of the evening, D at bedtime, and just woke up to throw up again. She's clearly sick. Now I... -
ARCHIVED How Long To Try Gluten Free?
Gardening replied to kimtn's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Also check zinc levels. I do think the symptoms warrant a trial. OT helped my daughter's SPD quite a bit, but even when she "graduated", she couldn't stand dress-up clothes. Yet several months after being truly gluten-free (she needed a clean-out to reboot her system), she was able to prance around the house in princess dresses. -
ARCHIVED If You Get Glutened Friday Night, You Feel The Effects ________
Gardening posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You feel the effects when? Friday night? Saturday morning? Later? Both my daughters are gluten sensitive/celiac, and I've been off gluten for 6 months - very strict - to see if it would help my fibromyalgia. It didn't seem to help. I tried something with gluten a week ago as a test, and didn't see any effects. So Friday night, my husband and I went... -
ARCHIVED 3 Year Old Need Maryland Doctor
Gardening replied to swchach's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Dr Anca Safta is the pediatric GI with the Celiac Research Center in Baltimore. They are affiliated with the U of MD hospital downtown. The office is within the hospital - but the office is only for pediatric specialists and the surgical procedures are done in a children's hospital-within-a-hospital. The waiting room has toys and murals, the exam room... -
ARCHIVED Constipation...
Gardening replied to ToriMartin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
So far, she's getting backed up again. I was trying to be conservative in the doses - frankly, I skipped a couple of days after the cleanse, then chose the smaller of the recommended doses (doc said 1/2 to 1 scoop, and I've been doing 1/2, thinking she's only 35 pounds, why give her the adult dose?) I'm going to slowly increase her dose - want things... -
ARCHIVED When My Child First Went Gluten-Free, I Noticed _______
Gardening replied to Gardening's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Up to 5 poops/day, mostly undigested food. Today, her first poop was at 1:30pm, and from a distance, it would have looked normal and formed (up close there was still undigested food, but not as much). So maybe we're turning a corner... -
ARCHIVED When My Child First Went Gluten-Free, I Noticed _______
Gardening posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 2 year old has been gluten free for one week. I have not seen any changes yet. I know one week is not much, but I was so hoping for a magic bullet... When did you first notice changes/improvements? -
ARCHIVED Constipation...
Gardening replied to ToriMartin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My older daughter has major constipation issues. Here's what her GI (who happens to be at the Celiac Research Center in Baltimore, but my daughter does not have an official celiac dx): 1. Do a 2-day cleanse. Only clear liquids for 2 days. Strained chicken broth, vegatable broth, clear juices, popsicles, etc, and WATER. Take a double dose of Miralax... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Test Results
Gardening replied to musicmom2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Another possibility is that you are IgA deficient, and so you would otherwise spike a much higher number on Enterolab, but you don't make enough IgA. This is rare, but this is the reason a blood celiac panel includes Total IgA as one of the tests, to make sure the other tests (IgA tissues transglutamase, etc) are valid. I think it's worthwhile to try... -
ARCHIVED Help Understanding Celiac Panel Results For 1Yr Old Daughter
Gardening replied to JamieCarin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
JamieCarin - As long as the lab report has the correct age listed, then it should automatically give the correct range for her age. I don't have my personal labs in front of me, but my range is much, much higher and my actual number is something like 260, which would be waaaay high according to your daughter's range, but pretty much in the middle of... -
ARCHIVED Red Blood This Morning, Went To The Ped.
Gardening replied to brendab's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The Celiac Research Center is part of the University of Maryland hospital/medical school. It is not a stand-alone facility. They have all specialties there, and they have a children's hospital within the big hospital. Dr Safta is actually treating a 19 mos old who was diagnosed with Crohn's at 12 mos, which is quite rare, so she is not exclusive to celiac... -

Gardening replied to brendab's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just noticed you were in the DC area. I am too, but we went to the Celiac Research Center in Baltimore and saw Dr Safta there - she is the pediatric GI who works with Dr Fasano, who is a top celiac researcher. She was knowledgable and really great with little kids. -
ARCHIVED Help Me Make My Home Gluten-Free
Gardening replied to Gardening's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
And a new coffee/spice grinder, since I used to use the Martha Stewart trick of cleaning it out with a piece of bread! Off to a field day at Bed Bath and Beyond! -
ARCHIVED Help Understanding Celiac Panel Results For 1Yr Old Daughter
Gardening replied to JamieCarin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There is a different reference range, because adults produce more IGA than young children. If her total IGA is below the range, then yes, she is IGA deficient. My 4 year old has a total IGA of 21, but her age-adjusted range starts at 27. Her pediatric GI considers her to be IGA deficient, and therefore the celiac panel is not a valid test for her.... -
ARCHIVED Red Blood This Morning, Went To The Ped.
Gardening replied to brendab's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Good for you! I totally gave up on my ped. I hope you get an appt soon. Make sure you tell the receptionist he is having black stools and there has been visible blood in his stool. If there have been any weight gain issues, mention that too. And if it's still a while before your appt, ask if they have a last minute cancellation waitlist, or if you... -
ARCHIVED Help Me Make My Home Gluten-Free
Gardening replied to Gardening's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Oh -right! I should replace all my spreadables (Earth's Best, almond butter, Veganaise, etc) for the crumbs - thank you for reminding me! My older girl is gluten-free too, so we are making the whole house gluten-free. We were just waiting for the scopes, since my little one needed gluten up until then. New toaster - check. And I guess my husband... -
ARCHIVED Help Me Make My Home Gluten-Free
Gardening posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My littlest gets upper and lower scopes tomorrow, and we're going gluten-free right after. I know about: No non-stick pans New wooden cooking spoons New cutting boards No more Aveeno products Vacuum the #@$% out of my couch and probably get it professionally cleaned. I see the Joelle makeup ads all over this site. Is there really gluten... -
ARCHIVED Moisturizers
Gardening replied to Terri-Anne's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am new to gluten-free, but I assume with health and beauty products, a big thing to watch out for is oats. Oats are in (almost?) all of the Aveeno products, and it's a pretty common ingredient in products for sensitive skin, for it's soothing properties (for people who don't react to oats!). It would be listed clearly on the ingredients. -
ARCHIVED Laura's Wholesome Junk Food
Gardening posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My family ate a pretty controlled (I thought) lunch at Whole Foods. We bought Laura's Wholesome Junk Food gluten-free brownie bites. I noticed later that the package said it was made on shared equipment. That night, my older daughter went into an hour-long non-verbal rage and had a very loose stool. We were also trialing strawberries that day... -
ARCHIVED Has Your Child Had A Colonoscopy?
Gardening replied to Gardening's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
MacieMay - Thank you, that is very helpful! My daughter isn't potty-trained, either, but she has a terrible time with diarrhea and blistering diaper rash. finally diagnosed - True, no incision - I guess I was thinking of the biopsy component, though. A friend's child's duedenum was perforated during the same procedure, so I have a lot of anxiety about... -
ARCHIVED Has Your Child Had A Colonoscopy?
Gardening replied to Gardening's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thank you! I'm glad she did so well! How did the amusement park work out with all the (I assume) diarrhea? I was planning on staying at home. Also, how long did the actual surgery last? And what were her results? -
ARCHIVED Has Your Child Had A Colonoscopy?
Gardening posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm really nervous - the GI wants to rule out IBD/Crohn's and seems pretty confident that my daughter has celiac. She has to be on a liquid diet for two days w/Miralax in preparation for surgery. She is only 2.5 and I don't know how to explain why she can't eat for two days. I'd do it with her in solidarity, but I don't want to be physically weak...
