Ok, this puts me in a dilemma too. My GI doctor found my Celiac but also that I had GERD and a hiatal hernia. I don't feel my GERD because I guess my hiatal hernia keeps it from coming up but my doctor put me on Nexium. I asked when I could get off it because I don't like to take medicines if I can avoid them. She said I had to take it for a least 6 months to a year for my stomach to heal even though I couldn't feel any pain. I guess it is suspose to help my hiatal hernia too. Ok, so now I don't know what to do.

Good question. I may try Lipton Onion soup again since it says made in a facility that processes wheat. It doesn't say may contain traces of wheat. There are certain products that I can't find substitutes for.

I am trying to switch over my personal care products. So far all the hair sprays I have used have gluten in them. Does anyone know of a safe hair spray. Is there a product line that has all gluten free stuff and can be bought at a local mall or store?

I kinda thought Cool Whip wasn't too bad for us. I have been using Lactaid milk and didn't think I was having any problems with it. I do have to admit that I had a latte with real milk and maybe that was it. I just don't really like Soy milk and I don't like any of the other "substitute" milks. Anyway I hate my diet, who doesn't, so I make rich gluten free deserts like flourless chocolate cake and who knows but my gut probably can't handle all that fat.
Today I found that my symptoms were simular to ones I think I had when I ate gluten but maybe not as bad. As I said - can you tell in any way if it is gluten from CC that is causing the symptoms or lactose exposure? It would be nice if there was a difference but maybe not.

I am a new Celiac so I am still learning. I had a bowl of Ben and Jerry's ice cream a month ago and had a reaction. My intestines where having a bubble bath of their own. I thought the ice cream was gluten free so I assumed that I now had a lactose intolerance. For a month now I have tryed to be lactose free but yesterday I decided to cheat with using Cool Whip on my gluten free desert and buttermilk in my gluten free muffin mix. I may be having some symptoms but not too bad. My question is - do people find that their symptoms from a lactose exposure are different than a gluten one? And how important is it to stay lactose free or is it just a comfort thing. I wouldn't think of exposing myself to gluten but might still be making CC mistakes.

Fage is great!! Just found it, and I am addicted. Yummmmmmy.
-Daisy
I did try Fage and it is good. I think it is better than Dannon Greek so I will do Fage from now on.

In my opinion you should look for a different product. Anything you put on your body or hair has the capacity to make it into your mouth or nose. I also wouldn't want the mist floating around and landing on my toothbrush, handles of my faucet etc.
I hadn't thought of that. I have been busy working on learning food choices and now and going to watch personal care products but it is a long process. I almost think make-up and such is even harder to evaluate. At least I don't have DH but I am going to switch everything over as I learn more.

I went back to the store and read the label again. Now it says - processed in a plant that also processes wheat so I decided not to buy it again. Maybe it is ok but for this week I chose another recipe.

I made the oven baked chicken that is on the Betty Crocker site and it was good and easy to make.

This what I understand:
Lipton Onion Recipe Soup & Dip Mix does list Autolyzed Yeast Extract (Barley) - basically MSG. I believe that this is one of those components that is so processes, that it is, in fact gluten free, regardless of the source.

The Facts
# Autolysis is a chemical process in which salt and live yeast interacts. The salt causes the live yeast to essentially self-destruct--the digestive enzymes in the yeast "eat" themselves. This creates an inactive yeast with an entirely different set of proteins. Further processing creates autolyzed yeast extract. Many processed foods contain the ingredient; but what few are aware of is that autolyzed yeast extract, with its hearty flavoring, is also an abundant source of MSG.

# YEAST: Baker's yeast, autolyzed yeast, and autolyzed yeast extract are gluten free. Brewer's yeast if not gluten-free unless it is found in a dietary food supplement, in which case it is gluten-free. All distilled vinegar is gluten-free. Malt vinegar is not distilled and is the only one to be avoided.
Good to know. I wonder if I am ever going to figure out how to read labels.

I am another IBS person and had it for 30 years. Now this year I find out I am a Celiac. I always had constipation unless I was having an "IBS" episode. I think everyone who has IBS should be tested for Celiac.

I just looked at my label for Redkin hair spray #18 and it has wheat in it. I can almost taste it when I spray. Should I be using another product or just try to keep my mouth closed when I spray

While I was shopping today, I found barley listed on Lipton's Onion Soup Mix box for the first time. I called Unilever, and found out that they have indeed decided to change their recipe and add gluten. When I asked why, they couldn't tell me. I can't believe they would add gluten to something that was great the way it was, and I wanted to alert people to this change. Please call Unilever and protest at 1-877-995-4490. In the meantime, does anyone know of an onion soup mix without gluten?
I saw that too on their dry mix package. So is it or is it not gluten free. I would love to use it but I didn't buy any.

This document IMHO is outstanding material to bring to your child's doctor:

The page where this doc came from also contains lots of other good stuff:

Thank you, my children are age 33 and 30 so the decision is up to them but I will continue to send them information to convince them to do testing. So far I haven't had any luck but they are both busy parents. My daughter is 7 months pregnant so I worry about her the most. She has an adopted son and then got pregnant but was told she probably would never be able to. I strongly believe her infertility issures may be due to Celiac because she has for years been then one with "stomach" problems.

LOTS of companies claim "gluten free" who seem unaware of the cc issues with shared lines or shared facilities. I NEVER trust something that says "gluten free" until I contact the company and grill them, particularly because I have learned (the very hard way...) that I am ultra-sensitive to the evil gluten. Like so many on this board!
Just a thought,
lisa
There are mornings like today that I think this whole thing is impossible to figure out. I spend hours on the computer and feel like I am just making a dent in my knowledge of how to be gluten free. I can't imagine how some people who work or are busy mothers do it.
Anyway I picked up some Fage yogurt yesterday. I liked Dannon's greek yogurt but will try Fage.

Gluten Free grocery Shopping Guide by matison & Matison is a great purse sized book and I always have it with me. Like everything else though it was accurate at the time of publication so you still need to check ingredients but it is a great starting point.
I agree, it was very helpful for me as a new Celiac. They do post updates with changes on their web site. So check that every once and awhile.

I am going for my yearly blood work next week. Last year I was found to have Thyroid problems but no other problems. Then in July this year I was diagnosed with Celiac by biopsy. I was wondering if I should have other things added to my normal blood work like added Thyroid testing that isn't on the normal test or anything else that might be helpful to know.

That is encouraging news. I am hoping for the same thing. I am new to the diet but my bone scans weren't getting any better in spite of taking calcum and Boniva. My GI doctor who found my Celiac said that my back pain will probably go away too. I hope many of us Celiac's can look at the positive side of things.

I have found that dish soap is gluten-free. The problem might be the bathroom soap as wheat germ oil is added to things to make it soft, shiny and stick to hair or skin. But even then, most of the unfancy handsoaps probably don't have that.
Would like to know what toliet paper, laundry soap, dish soap or toothpaste has gluten so I can avoid them. I haven't found this to be an issue yet.
Crest and Colgate are safe which is the most important thing but I too wonder about soap.

I had a scone for breakfast almost everyday before my diagnosis. I have tried different recipes but haven't come up with a good one yet. I love to put chocolate chips in them and eat them with clotted cream. Can't use the clotted cream anymore since I am lactose intolerant but someday hope to. Maybe someone knows a lactose free whip cream that I can mix with lactose free cream cheese to make my own clotted cream. Anyway mostly I need a good scone recipe.

So, I'm back at school handling gluten snacks for my kindergartners and helping them with lunch. I carry soft soap with me to lunch to wash hands after helping them. I wash my hands so much throughout the day and they are now cracking open. Which makes me more paranoid about touching gluten! I did buy some food gloves and plan to use them since I have wheat and barely allergy as well. Do any of you know a good gluten-free hand lotion? I'm still a newbie at all this and just about everything scares me. I was using vasline unscented lotion, it looked safe, but thought I'd get this forums opinion. Thanks in advance!
I remember a post on someone commenting on how gluten eaters eat...I totally agree. My teacher has gluten in my classroom and it kills me. Crumbs all over! I have to be so careful. I keep my desk safe!
I was just getting ready to ask that question and need the same answer. I was taking care of my grandson and it seemed everything he ate had gluten so I washed my hands a lot. I have a good lotion that is Shea Butter but I don't know if it is gluten free. I had it before my diagnosis.

I am sure this has been discussed but it takes awhile to look through all the posts. I am newly dignosed with Celiac. Should my daughter and son be tested and what about my sisters and brother. Also what tests should they be given. My daughter was told if she didn't have symptoms that testing wasn't necessary. I have a sister who has auto-immune diseases but tested negative for Celiac on blood work. She also had symptoms of DH but I think the biopsy was negative. She just has to stay out of the sun. Since there are now 2 of us in one family that have auto-immune diseases I would think Celiac testing should be done on all of us. How do you approach a doctor to ask for tests.
By the way my children are young adults. I didn't have many symptoms and was diagnosed by accident when I had an endoscopy done for another unrelated symptom.

Right, try a search on silent celiac or latent celiac. Symptom free people are in danger just like people with symptoms. And there are many, many symptoms besides digestive issues that are related to celiac.
Thanks to all you guys. I really think my daughter has Celiac because all the symptoms she has had for years but when I told her mine she said she didn't have any of those. She also had had a lot of problems getting pregnant and she was married six years before getting pregnant. Can anyone be specific about what blood tests should be ordered.

I just ate there today. I have eaten at Cracker Barrel many times since going gluten free 01/10. I have not been glutened so far. I always tell the waiter that I'm gluten free and I ask them to please tell the cook to be careful. I have had grilled pork chops, green beans, carrots, fried apples, grilled hamburger steak, sirlon steak, baked potatoes, eggs, bacon (haven't gotten the nerve to try the grits yet). Sometimes they even have the manager come over but they are so use to me coming about every other week that doesn't happen anymore. Good luck!
That is nice to know. I like doing breakfast there and I love their grits. I know they weren't listed on their gluten free list but can't think of why grits would be off limits. I am a northerner turned southerner since being married to an Alabama guy.

I was diagnosed hypothyroid last year and then Celiac this July. If my thyroid is autoimmune (Hashimoto) is it important to know this. I go in for labs this Thursday and don't know if I should ask for differnt Thyroid tests.
