    ARCHIVED Communion

Hi Donna, A letter was recently sent to the priests in the Archdiocese of Phila. instructing them about this host and confirming that it is approved for consecration by the Synod of Bishops. If your pastor gives you a hard time, let me know and I'll see if I could get a copy of the letter. KathyB

    ARCHIVED Communion

Hi Donna, The hosts are available through the Altar Bread Dept., Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, Clyde MO 64432, 1-800-223-2772. When you call to order ask about the freezer issure. I think it is for long time use and the host is fine if not kept frozen. My daughter just receive at Bacculaurate at 7pm and gave it to the priest that am and it was...
  3. My daughter had all the neuro tests - normal- but was diagnosed with migraine disorder not linked to stress or diet. The gluten-free diet did not change the headaches and after trying many meds - she is still on a few for the headaches - we tried accupuncture and it worked. After 3 years of headaches almost daily, she went one month without. I do believe...
  4. The Chart House at Penn's Landing, Sullivan's Steakhouse in KOP, Carrabas in Springfield Mall and Vinny Testa's of Boston in Wynnewood have all served great gluten-free meals to my celiac daughter in the past few months. Most better steakhouses will accomodate you with a filet, potato, salad and Chart House and Sullivan's are top notch. Carrabas posts a...
  5. Thanks Lisa - maybe by the time the kids get a little older their will be more restaurant choices for you. I gave the dietician at Gwynedd the business card from the Dietary Shoppe and she is going to order some of my daughter's favorites. Good luck on Saturday. KathyB
  6. Lisa and Sara, I do believe the ravioli is from the company Dietary Specialties but I don't have any in right now. Lisa, The Dietary SHoppe is a must trip. The store is almost entirely gluten free except for a few speciality foods for PKU? and diabetics. They have both frozen and dry goods and the shopowner is Celiac and can give you lots of help. Try the...
  7. My daughter did not have a reaction but she doesn't have the typical GI symptoms although she is biopsy dx'd. The restaurant is Vinny Testa's and I just called ahead and asked the chef if he could prepare a gluten-free meal and he was very knowledgeable about the diet as he has a regular celiac customer. He did not need the restaurant card. I would call ahead...
  8. Hi Lisa, I get the cheese ravioli from the Dietary Shoppe which is in Philadelphia. The web is http/www.dietaryshoppe.com . They also have stuffed shells and lasagna, all frozen. I am pretty sure they ship the frozen foods but since it is local I have never tried. I have also discovered that a company called Nuovo pasta make gluten-free potato gnocchi that...

    ARCHIVED Communion

Ellen. I am not sure if the priest is keeping the hosts in the freezer but I supplied him with the first shipment of the hosts from the Benedictine sisters and he said he will order from now on. He consecrates two hosts at the first weekend mass (sat @ 4) for my 18 yr. old daughter and a newly diagnosed 9 year old. She simply stops in the sacristy before...
  10. Our family just got back from Vinny T's of Boston (actually located in Wynnewood.PA) where the chef offered to prepare most any dish, except the pasta, gluten-free. It was the first good Italian meal my daughter had out since going gluten-free in Jan. HE prepared chicken parm using grilled chicken, marinara sauce and cheese, sauteed green beans and zucchini...

    ARCHIVED Carraba's

Dinner at Carraba's was great!!!!! It is a little tough to look arounds at the pasta and Italian bread but the food was worth it. Kathy
  12. I just returned from Bennigan's and was pleasantly surprised to fine the gluten-free menu. My celiac teen wasn't with us but was happy to hear about it. The menu may be limited but it is important to her to be able to order from a menu without having to ask all the gluten questions. I'm sure it is important to mention to your server that although the item...

    ARCHIVED Communion

According to Dr. Alessio Fassano of the U of Maryland and a well known authority on Celiac disease, the low gluten host made by the Benedictine Nuns is safe for consumption by celiacs. It took ten years to create a host with enough wheat to be sanctioned by the Catholic Church but low enough in gluten (barely any) to be safe for celiacs. My daughter has received...
  14. I just wanted to say that I use one set of pots, pans, plastic spatulas etc. all in good condition for gluten-free and not gluten-free cooking and after 8 weeks on the gluten-free diet my daughters TTG went from very high positive to completely normal. I keep a separate counter for gluten-free food prep, also butter dish and toaster. I think if there was...
  15. Kelly, I wanted to add that my daughter is also under neuro.'s care for migraines and is managed with topamax and nortriptyline, she also is under cardio care for fainting disorder and has at times been suspect of mental illness. Since there is no family history, I refused to believe that, and it was confirmed by a psychologist. She is 18, has always had...
  16. Kelly, I just want to let you know that I have daughter who has just tested positive for celiac disease by genetic blood test, serum blood test and biopsy and her symptons were not intestinal but more reflux, irritability, leg pain and weight loss. After going on the gluten-free diet the moodiness and leg pain went away but the reflux got worse. The gluten...
  17. My daughter definitely has body aches related to gluten. They went away while she was gluten-free for 7 weeks and are back now that she is consuming gluten again for her biospy tomorrow. Mainly it is her legs that ache and not much helps. Warm showers or baths are better than using the motrin for a little one. Good Luck! KathyB
  18. ToBlackheartedwolf. My son and I are working on wireless site Open Original Shared Link so you can leave your binder home. It is free and can be used on any web enabled cell phone. The database is constantly growing as I am working on it in my spare time. Good Luck! KathyB

ARCHIVED Ped. Gi In Central Jersey?

We see a Ped. GI at Children's Hospital of Phila. Dr. Barbara Haber and I have heard good things about Dr. Janice Kelly who is also there. Appointments for both . are at 215-590-3630. Nutrtionists are also on staff there. KathyB
  20. I have a newsletter from a support group that gives a list of Ken's dressing that do not have gluten in the recipe. Like many companies that produce both gluten and gluten free products the statement is the usual one regarding minute possiblity of cross contamination. The packets are handy and my daughter uses them without problems. She also just got blood...
  21. My health care provider is Indepence Blue Cross of Greater Phila. The Spring 2004 Update publication for Personal Choice members has an article on page 9 titled "Celiac Disease Can Harm Digestion". It is a full page and states that the latest thinking is that one in 150 Americans have Celiac disease. Kathy B
  22. Mariann, I doubt you could find anyone as picky as my 18 year old daughter and she truly prefers them to flour tortillas. I have an electric quesadilla maker and she likes the standard cheese, chicken and veggie combo and also the very simple gluten-free ham and american cheese which is similar to a hot pocket. That's too bad about the soy. I keep worrying...
  23. Libby, I see you like the corn tortillas. Have you tried the new Don Pancho Gluten Free Wraps? My daughter actually prefers them to regular flour tortillas and they make great quesadillas. The are lighter than the corn tortillas and I found them on-line at the gluten free mall site. Kathy
  24. Hi Hillary, I also found that Kraft.foods always list gluten containing ingredients on their labels. Both Cocoa and Fruity Pebbles are on manyGF lists and even on the handout I was given at Children's Hospital of Phila. I combine them with Nature's Path Organic Crsipy Rice for rice krispie treats. My daughter says they are too sweet with just the Pebbles...
  25. My daughter's biggest complaint before her Celiac diagnosis was an insatiable appetite. Once gluten-free her appetite diminished. She is very thin and doesn't like her gluten-free choices so if she has a bad eating day she has an ensure plus blended with a couple of scoops of ice cream. She also eats Reeses Fastbreaks when she is out and can't find anything...
