  1. I feel for ya!!! The pros on this site will guide you. But all I can say - I get a smidgen of gluten and I get the burning, bloating and gas. I even did one little bite of a communion wafer Sunday and got gas - !!! So, the body has to heal again. We have stomach cancer in our family, so I'm all about looking at this like poison. Even a crumb. Hopefully...
  2. Don't give up! It's worth it! And it really does get easier. It took me awhile to figure out that I was getting gluten accidentally from different sources - like the fries at a fast food place, the hot sauce at a mexican food restaurant and my son, who is also gluten sensitive, was greatly disappointed to discover that the "malt flavoring" in his Rice...
  3. Bella - When I say we are basically eating the same things, I mean the same things but gluten free. Like, instead of Rice Crispies (which to our shock has malt flavoring) my son eats Rice Twice which we get at our local grocery's speciality section, and it's at the health food store. We also eat gluten-free waffles, of course gluten-free bread, and we...
  4. Hi Bella - I'm glad you finally got some answers to your problems. That is so cool. I am 6 months into the diet and the best resource for me has been this website. As for cookbooks,I got a couple, but they are too complicated for me and I have a picky family of eaters and little time or patience to cook. Still, I just google what type of dish I want...
  5. My first gluten-free Thanksgiving too and I was ready -- with my own serving spoon, and digging into the part of the plates that had not been touched. Then I stepped away from the table and when I came back, a relative next to me was so nice to serve my plate with all of the dishes passing by. Ug! Lesson learned - guard your plate! Really - people are...
  6. Hey You all - That response was from my Colorado friend Carol, a retired nurse who helped me realize I was gluten sensitive. She's awesome!
  7. Great stuff everybody. Thank you so much. It's crazy how much better you can handle this lifestyle with support like this.
  8. No, no, no. More of a feeling like we were sitting down over a cup of tea and I'm hanging onto your every word. I think my biggest takeaway of this post is - trust your gut. No need to get official labels. Also, you can't force other people to think or do anything, even your own kids when they are grown and gone. You have to provide the information...
  9. Dear Mushroom and Monklady123 - Your sage advice means so much. Thank you. I will definitely not forego months of subjecting myself to poison to get diagnosed. I humbly ask for a bit more of your precious time and valuable wisdom as I further this conversation. But I wonder if it was a mistake to not take my kids through all of the testing so they...
  10. Well Plumbago, I'm so glad you asked, because you may have some advice for me. I do have a high deductible (5K), so your first suspicion is correct. But I am wondering if an official diagnosis would create problems down the road if I need to get new insurance, which is possible. Of course - I know much will change in the insurance world, but basically...
  11. Ah... the wisdom of the posters has brought peace to my life today. Thank you so much. Now, as I confront these well meaning relatives I can handle it a bit better. Actually, I think they all have the same problem but are in denial and trying to take me with them Not going there!!!! You all are awesome. Best, Bobbie J.
  12. I seriously feel for you. I am so sorry .. for your cat too!!! I was just reading an article on the main page of celiac.com today about how few people understand us. You should read it for laughs - it's the one by Danna Korn. She basically says that .01% of the population get us and will try to help us - and that if we find those people, worship the...
  13. Hey Veteran Posters - This newbie has a question that I am being asked and I don't know how to answer. If I am gluten sensitive, how come I did not get sick all of the time eating gluten. But when I went off gluten, then reintroduced it, I got sick - even if eating a crumb of it? I had stopped eating gluten to try and fix asthma-type/VCD problems...
  14. EatMeat4Good- Your post really made my day, just because it's a happy ending story. I'm so glad that you have found some answers - on your own! I am praying for you to continue to get healthy - and get support from people in your daily life. You know, my family thought I was nuts. I told them I thought family symptoms decades back and currently are...
  15. I was just about to dive into a lunch of Progresso Chicken & Wild Rice Soup, and after spending the last 2 days of recovering from being glutonized, I stopped. Something told me not to eat it. I had read in previous forums this was okay, and the ingredients did not say it had gluten, but it didn't say it was gluten free. As my bowl of soup sat steaming...
  16. Carol is just going to love hearing that. Thank you!
  17. I'm suffering these syptoms tonight after eating candy with peanuts. May I ask - how did you find out that you were allergic to pork?
  18. I can't thank you all enough - the people who have posted hundreds of time on this site, the ones who have written books, created websites, children's books, made zillions of phone calls to companies... My family and I are reaping the benefits of all of it as newly diagnosed gluten sensitive, possibly Celiac Disease people. More than once I have been...
  19. Thank you. After I posted this, I did finally find a past post that talked about the problems with Amys. We are so tired of not feeling good that I don't want to risk it. I'll try that website, but in the meantime - it's quinoa pasta tonight! Then maybe homecooked gluten-free chili if I can figure that out.
  20. My kids (8 and 10) and going into month two of a gluten-free life and your site has been a tremendous help, but my kids are going to bed hungry and tonight I want to fix them a favorite - frito chili pie. I picked up the Amy's Organic Chili at our health food store. It says it's gluten-free but made in a factory that process wheat. So.. what do I do?
  21. For lunch, here are some ideas: Soup or chili or leftovers (spaghetti, stew, etc.) in a thermos. I heat up HOT water and pre-heat the thermos and then dump out the water and then the thermos stays hot until lunch. Make a pot of soup or stock up on soup on sale (Progresso Southwest Chicken/rice, wild rice/chicken, regular chicken/rice and Beef pot roast...
  22. has not set their status

  23. Thanks everyone for your replies to this amazing mom and wife. My kids and I are also newly diagnosed, so the tips were VERY helpful. I also have been freaking out over the lunch issue. It's usually late at night as I gaze into my pantry wondering what in the world am I going to put in those empty lunch boxes staring at me. A tip I read that I'm...
