ARCHIVED Help! Does Pepto Slow Healing?
GFshay replied to GFshay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks, those suggestions are great. I stopped the pepto 2 days ago and also cut out dairy. I'm feeling much better! I hate the idea of no dairy, but you're probably right that my amount of damage is too much for even the best Lactaid pills. I hope to return to it soon... Tonic water, eh? That explains some of why I always felt better after having a vodka... -
ARCHIVED Help! Does Pepto Slow Healing?
GFshay replied to GFshay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for the input-- maybe it would help if I give you more info. I didn't get really ill after Thanksgiving, but I just started feeling nauseous and had lots of cramping/bloating. I didn't have full-blown D and didn't vomit. So I don't think it was food poisoning and doesn't make me think the doctor would have much to say about it except to rest and... -
I was CC'd on Thanksgiving after allowing a hostess to do her very best to cook gluten-free foods for me. Ever since then, I have had lots of pain in my upper and lower intestines (burning, throbbing & cramping), occasional D and nausea. I spent several days eating all my own, totally gluten-free foods which were easy on the stomach (rice, bananas, applesauce...

ARCHIVED Remedies For The Newly Diagnosed?
GFshay replied to jess-gf's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm also looking for things to aid the process. Lots of people have talked about enzymes-- which ones have worked for people? Are there any drawbacks to starting them before giving my own body a chance to get itself balanced(like ending up dependent on them)? I've discovered that candied ginger from Trader Joe's helps settle my stomach, and Benadryl helps... -
ARCHIVED More Sensitivity To Dairy?
GFshay posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am about 7 weeks into the gluten-free diet and have been finding that, after a sort of honeymoon period of feeling great, have now had a few bouts of having discomfort/pain/bloating after eating anything. It lasts for a few days, so I always assume that somehow I've CC'd myself. Of course, after Thanksgiving at family's house, I'm going through that now... -
ARCHIVED Recently Diagnosised...questions!
GFshay replied to Free-CountryGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Unfortunately doctors just don't get good enough training on Celiac and other diet-related problems because there are very few medications that make a difference, which means drug companies don't provide the training on it the way they do for heart disease, diabetes, etc. If you only recently started being gluten free, I'd recommend finding a doctor who will... -
ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Dinner... Dont Cook For Me!
GFshay replied to Rowena's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm going to my husband's family's house for Thanksgiving, and the hostess has been very insistent on making things that are safe for me. I kept saying I'd bring things that would be okay for me so I'm not nervous, and she said she understand and was fine with it... but she went and bought new casserole dishes and a cutting board to be used for gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Varying Types Of Reactions-- All From Gluten?
GFshay replied to GFshay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with new symptoms (same thing with me: vertigo etc), although I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing that. I keep hearing everyone's voices in my head to "give it time" and just be patient... easier said than done, right? Anyway, thanks for the reassurance. I need to get out my head a bit, I think. -
ARCHIVED Varying Types Of Reactions-- All From Gluten?
GFshay posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm only about a month into the gluten-free diet and have been quite careful. I'm avoiding most processed foods and whenever I do eat processed stuff I make sure it's not made in a shared facility. That said, I've been having random bouts of very different symptoms. I'd say about 60% of my week each week has been symptomatic in some way. Sometimes it... -
ARCHIVED Boston Market's New Gravy Contains Wheat
GFshay replied to So Cal Cyclist's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I saw some previous threads from '05-'06 saying that the rotisserie chicken at Boston Market is gluten free... does anyone know it that's still true? My husband got really excited about the possibility of getting chicken from there. -
I've been battling this too as I'm also new to having a gluten-free kitchen. I've replaced my cutting boards and cooking utensils (all bamboo). My aunt has Celiac and shares her kitchen with gluten-eaters. She said she uses plastic storage containers and cutting boards that have had gluten on them with no issues, as long as she runs them through the dishwasher...

ARCHIVED Vertigo/dizziness After Going gluten-free?
GFshay replied to GFshay's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks for the suggestions... I'm waiting to get in with my doc for follow-ups to test my nutrient levels... I have about a week still to go before that. I haven't eaten at any restaurants since starting the gluten-free diet. I've checked my toiletries and they all seem okay, although there's a chance I haven't recognized some ingredient in there. There... -
ARCHIVED Vertigo/dizziness After Going gluten-free?
GFshay posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have been gluten-free for 3 weeks now, and have had a few days here and there when I feel lightheaded and have quick episodes of moderate vertigo, which tend to come and go throughout the day. I haven't seen any connection to eating something that might be contaminated, and have been very strict with my diet so far. I haven't noticed these sorts of... -
ARCHIVED I'm About To Start An Elimination Diet...
GFshay replied to StacyA's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Try tea instead of the coffee. Black tea has a good amount of caffeine, and I would think it is relatively safe even during an elimination diet... but I'm no expert. I've started drinking green tea because people say it's healthy and can help detox your body. Although I think it sometimes can irritate the stomach. Good luck! -
I'm also new to this whole thing... actually even newer than you! I give you credit for being brave at the restaurant, and even braver that you stood up for yourself when they messed up. I've been gluten-free for about 3 weeks and haven't yet tried anything out of the house, aside from a friend's house who spent lots of time prepping carefully for me. ...

ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed: How To Keep Eating Enough?
GFshay replied to GFshay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Those are great bits of advice. I am a complete sugar addict, so cutting that out right away might be a tough goal. Not something I can do right away, at least. I'm having enough trouble eating enough as it is. I am currently reducing dairy to be safe, but have always been able to tolerate it with a Lactaid pill. My doc didn't seem to think that would... -
ARCHIVED Lactase Supplement -- Silly Me...
GFshay replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am a huge advocate for lactase supplements. My doc said they're totally fine to take as much as needed, and they give me lots of much needed protein and calcium. I usually try to cluster my dairy into specific meals or snacks so I'm not popping them all day... but I usually take at least a couple a day. Plus you don't have to worry about weird flavoring... -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed: How To Keep Eating Enough?
GFshay posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just started my gluten-free diet a bit over a week ago and glutened myself somehow a few days ago. I was already starting to feel much better till that happened, and since then I haven't been back to that good place yet. Although I've worked hard at being careful with what I eat, I'm back to my old stomach symptoms (bloating, pain, random bouts of "D")... -
ARCHIVED So, Tell Me Why I Need This Endoscopy....
GFshay replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My doctor told me the small intestine (the site of the damage in Celiac) is one of the fastest-healing parts of our body. He said you can start to have significant healing within just a week of being gluten free. So it is definitely important to do a gluten challenge before an endoscopy to have a definitive diagnosis that way. The one benefit of getting... -
I totally sympathize. I'm only a bit over a week of being gluten-free post-biopsy. Seriously, until you get the endoscopy, enjoy all your glutenous foods! I actually started a blog and kept track of the stuff I enjoyed before going gluten free and it made it more fun, even knowing I might be hurting my intestines. But it's all for the sake of getting a definitive...

ARCHIVED First Time Glutened? CVS Med To Blame?
GFshay replied to GFshay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I ended up sick all night... it seems like it was some major exposure... I didn't start to feel back to normal till last night and even now am not back to the health I had been feeling last week. My best guess is the meds since the food was very simple. Nothing new. Ingredients were just fish, OJ, lime peel, and garlic with rice and broccoli. However,... -
ARCHIVED Trader Joe's Gluten Free
GFshay posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just started my gluten-free diet and we had tacos using Trader Joe's corn shells and taco seasoning, both labeled with their little "Gluten Free" symbol in a cute little stamp of a "g" on the front. Then after the meal, my husband noticed that there was a bit more info on the nutrition label... It says: "Our vendors follow good manufacturing practices... -
ARCHIVED What Were Your Antibody Levels....
GFshay replied to Shannonlass's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I haven't been able to completely decipher my levels, although the physician's assistant said my levels were the highest she had ever seen. If anyone can help me figure out which is which, I welcome some assistance! Iga: 248 mg/dl (ref range 81-463) (tTG) Ab, IgG: (not tested... said "not required"... maybe because of other positive results?) Endomysial... -
ARCHIVED What To Do After Accidentally Eating Gluten?
GFshay replied to GabrielleM's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm actually in the middle of my first experience getting glutened. I'm watching TV and just riding it out tonight, but was curious if there's anything people recommend I do or take for the pain. I'm drinking lots of water and using a heating pad, but what I'd really like is something to dull the stomach pains I'm having. Does anyone know if something like... -
ARCHIVED First Time Glutened? CVS Med To Blame?
GFshay posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had my official diagnosis for Celiac 2 days ago but was able to start my gluten-free lifestyle one week ago (yay!) after my endoscopy. I have been starting to feel much better, but then today I took CVS Extra Strength Headache Relief (the generic for Excedrin), in the rapid release capsules because of a headache. I then cooked a lovely, carefully gluten...
