  1. Jeff, So sorry to hear that you have joint pain after three year gluten-free. If you know your diet is most definitely gluten-free, then I would think it might be something else triggering the pain and inflamation. Or you could be one of the few that take up to 5 years to heal and be completely symptoms free. I am 31 and have had joint problems since...
  2. Lyn, That's interesting about the NSAID's triggering DH reactions. I took Aleve for two years (almost daily) for my headaches and joint pain, and although I did have some DH on my scalp (along with the psoriasis) I never had it anywhere else on my body until I stopped taking the Aleve. I now think the Aleve caused a lot of the burning feeling in my intestine...
  3. emsmom, All of the symptoms you listed can be caused by celiac disease. I hope they are able to get your daughter in to see the GI sooner. I am going through testing on all three of my children, and have gotten appts. for them for this month. I hope yours goes well, since it sounds like your little one is sicker than mine are. God bless. Mariann
  4. dlayman, I am overloading on gluten in the hopes that it will show up on the biopsy. I think that I tested negative on the blood tests because my regular gluten diet was too low on gluten to cause enough damage to produce antibodies. I don't ever want to be on gluten again, so I want to know I did everything within my power to get accurate results. I...
  5. dhickey, Now that is just not nice that your in-laws will make special meals for your husbands uncle and not for you! I don't know why some people (especially family members) do this to us. As for the bread maker, it is not really needed for gluten-free breads. You can save yourself a bunch of money and just get a few new bread pans. Most of the gluten...
  6. filititi, have you checked into whether there are any celiac support groups near you. It really would help to meet other people near you who are going through the same thing. A good place to find support info is at Open Original Shared Link they have a very large database of support groups listed by states. It is normal to feel depressed and sad about...
  7. That's kinda cool, Shirley. Any idea where your mom got the name? It is very unique. And that dish you posted sounds good. Where do you get the pasta mix? Mariann
  8. I found this page on enabling.com that tells why celiacs need to avoid Open Original Shared Link I hope this helps. Mariann
  9. I have itchies caused by eating soy, which I am allergic to, and since I started back on gluten last November, in anticipation for a biopsy this month, I have itchy hands. The blisters didn't appear until about a week or so into the intense itchiness. Now the blisters are covering my left hand (back of hand and palm) and are spotty on the right hand. It...
  10. Tiffany, This is one of the reasons that I did agree to go back on gluten for the biopsy. I am 31 years old, chances are that I will see a "new" doctor at least once in my lifetime, and statistically more than once! I don't want to have to "prove" my situation to anyone. I want a concrete diagnosis that the medical field will accept without question....
  11. Whey is a milk protein. It is gluten free, but if you are sensitive to dairy, then you shouldn't have it. Many newly diagnosed celiacs just starting on the gluten free diet might need to avoid dairy for a while during the initial healing process, then can try adding it slowly back in. I am casein intolerant as well as gluten intolerant. Casein is a protein...
  12. Thanks guys, for your sympathy and support. If I had been gluten-free for longer I might not have gone through with it, but I had only gotten my test results back and been gluten-free for two weeks before my doctor finally agreed to do the biopsy. I knew this might happen, and had made my decision ahead of time. I was feeling better after two weeks gluten...
  13. Alison, I was wondering how long you have been gluten-free, as well as off the pill? I took birth control pills for about 5 years and then stopped taking them. I didn't have a period for about 6 months and then had one about every two months and then they slowly worked their way to somewhere around a month(give or take a week). I got pregnant about two...
  14. Thanks for the heads up. I just recently got that book, but haven't tried any of the recipes. I will keep a close eye on it when I do.
  15. Hi Enigma, I did try the high protein, low carb diet a few times, each time losing about 30 lbs. in two months. but at the time I did not know I had celiac disease, and I did have a hard time digesting the high amount of protein. I know that I did consume gluten in some foods during that time, so I know why I would have some of the symptoms remain...
  16. I am almost finished with my gluten challenge and will be going in for my biopsy in less than 3 weeks. I was just wondering, for those of you who have had to do this, is two months eating a LOT of gluten enough to show damage. I know it is affecting me, I now have a DH-like rash on my hands, and plenty of other symptoms returned when I went back on gluten...
  17. Kelly, YES! Many of us Celiacs suffer from this before going gluten free, and also during gluten contamination episodes. Some people call it different names like fuzzy mindedness, or brain fog, or spacey, but it is all pretty much the same feeling. During all the testing did they ever test you for celiac disease? Celiac Disease can often mask itself and...
  18. Hi everyone, I just wanted to say thanks for all the great ideas. I have three kids, 2 in school and one starting next year. They are all three most like Celiacs and after we get finished testing them they will start a gluten-free diet (if needed). I was finally diagnosed with celiac disease last Nov. 10th (2003). I have found that my children have always...

    ARCHIVED Cbs News Report

Hi Shirley, I guess some people have a hard time accepting that a "normal" food like a hamburger bun could be poison to someone. I am hoping that we can all make celiac disease a household word that everyone understands. Mariann
  20. Hi Everyone, I am happy about the changes being made, since it is easier to get around, but I'm still learning all the new gadgets. I changed my user name, many of you know me as fernandofamily , now I am gf4life! Which more accurately describes me on this board! I don't mind losing the old site, but there is a lot of valuable information being lost...
  21. Hi tgcatmr, I would say try the diet. You are very fortunate to have an openminded doctor in regards to celiac disease. Most doctors take a negative result and tell you you don't have it, and drop the issue. You should start to feel better and gain some weight as Silly Yak UK said, if of course Celiac is your only issue. Many also have problems with...
