  1. Bella, You said you have always had an intolerance to wheat gluten. Were you diagnosed with Celiac before? And have you also been avoiding rye and barley glutens? There are many forms of hidden gluten out there, so maybe you have been having gluten all along and did not know it. The stress of losing your brother could have triggered the disease to go...
  2. Sarah, if you find a good recipe for lasagna without cheese, let me know. I have some Tinkyada lasagna noodles, but just have no idea what to use in place of the cheese to make it taste"right". Mariann
  3. This is good to know. Now I have never liked taking pills unless I absolutely need them. Being intolerant to dairy as well as gluten I have been worried about my calcium level in my bones. I am wanting to get a bone density test, since my mom suffered terribly from kidney stones, and quite often (about 2-3 times a year, sometimes more) and now my older...
  4. I just wanted to share with you guys that I had a very nice lunch today at Mimi's Cafe restaraunt. I had a tuna and avocado sandwich and had them substitute a bed of lettuce for the bread. I explained that I am gluten intolerant and can't eat any bread at all. They brought it to me and verified that there was absolutely no bread anywhere on my plate. ...
  5. Not all things with natural flavoring in them have gluten in them. You need to call the company to find out exactly what the natural flavoring is. if they can't answer the question adequately I would avoid that product. I believe Yoplait is gluten-free, except they can't guarantee the vanilla flavoring is not made with grain alcohol based vanilla, so that...
  6. Kidney disease/stones can be common in Celiacs. Once you are completely gluten-free you shouldn't really form too many more stones, but I'm not sure if the calcification that is there will break up or not. My mother suffered terribly from kidney stones, and there are a few things that were recommended to her. The first being do not drink alcohol. This...
  7. So far the only things I've used it for is breads and it always calls for tapioca starch in the recipe. I don't know what the difference is, but I assume the starch is only part of the tapioca, and the flour is ground from whole tapioca. Sort of like the potato starch and flour. Please correct me if I am wrong. I would like to know for sure, as well....
  8. Hi Jessica, I'm glad you like De Boles, it goves you another choice when you are pasta shopping. We couldn't stand it. Yuck. On the top of my shopping list is "NO DE BOLES PASTA", so I don't accidently forget and buy another package. I figured somebody must like it, since they sell it at all the health food stores I've been to. Mariann
  9. Hi Debbie, After a year gluten free, there really is not point to bother with conventional testing, but Enterolabs is good, if you want to know "for sure". They can do a gene test, it costs around $150, and if you wanted they could also do a stool panel test to check for antibodies to gluten in your stool. Now this stool panel may very well show that...
  10. Hi Angie, I like the Tinkyada brand Brown Rice Pastas the best. The corn pasta is good. I DO NOT recommend any of the De Boles brand of pastas. None of us in the family liked them. As for bread, most of the store bought gluten free breads I've tried are just not worht the small fortune that you have to pay for a loaf. They just don't taste...
  11. Sarah, I have a different situation, since I am now gluten-free and my kids are still on gluten waiting until they are done testing. Their blood tests should be back this week, and if any of them are neg. on blood, but positive on the gene I will have them on the gluten-free diet as a precautionary measure. Until then, they are eating what ever gluten foods...
  12. bfinnegan, The way my kids doctor put it is that it is either 100% gluten free, or not at all. You really can't cheat on this diet. It is your health that is at stake, not just a few pounds like a weight loss diet. I just wanted to say, welcome to the board, and feel free to ask questions. We are all here to support each other. God bless,...
  13. Aldo, I found where I read the information. It was in Danna Korn's book ,"Wheat Free, Worry Free". This is what it says: I do remember reading somewhere about fructose intolerance, but it must have been somewhere else. I'll see if I can find it. Phil, I'm not surprised that they said IBS without testing you for other things. I'm sorry...
  14. I just got an e-mail about a gluten-free restaraunt in Edmond's (just north of Seattle) here is the info for it. There was an article about it in the Seattle Times, here is a little exerpt from the article. "Rarely does it feel so gratifying to recommend a restaurant as it does to recommend Kaili's, a folksy house restaurant in Edmonds so homespun its...
  15. Thanks Lily, I'm happy to share. I've always had a weird obsession with medical books and since I got on the internet it's been insane! I just seem to absorb what I read, at least when the topic interests me. My sister and a few of my friends lovingly refer to me as Dr.Mariann and call me to ask me what I think about their symptoms before they call the...
  16. Thanks Sarah. I'm going to make it as soon as aI get my hands on some cauliflower. I'm doing fine, just getting used to eating gluten-free again. It is such a relief after the last few months! Within one day my intestines were not rumbling violently and the pain was much less. I am looking forward to the results of my biopsy (in three weeks!) ...
  17. Hi JEN, It could be the eggs causing problems, but it wouldn't change your antibody levels to gluten. Although after 4 months the tests would not necessarily be at "zero" some people take 6 months or more to be able to reduce their levels to zero, and yours were exceptionally high. I have a few questions for you. Do you routinely have anything...
  18. Hi VAGuy, Yes being off gluten will alter the results of the blood tests and the biopsy, but since you have only been gluten-free for two months you hsould still be able to be tested by Enterolab. I highly recommend them, and they do offer a few tests. You could e-mail Dr. Fine at Enterolab and ask him which test he would recommend for you (the stool...
  19. Sarah, could you post the recipe for Roasted Cauliflower with Rosemary and Garlic? It sounds wonderful, and I'd like to try it. Thanks, Mariann
  20. I think it depends on who you talk to in the company. A lot of people do not know what gluten is, and since it doesn't say GLUTEN right there on the ingredients list, then they say it is gluten free. If the label says barley bran, then it is not gluten-free. The oats thing is still up in the air as far as it's gluten-free status, but the risk that it was...
  21. I have had a problem with the rice flour waffles being too grainy of a texture and my kids won't eat them. I don't care for them either. The only Van's waffle I have really liked was the Flax waffles. But not if they are allowed to get cold! They are just too dry and hard as a rock! I am about to give up on waffles altogether unless I can find a good...
  22. Jacque (or anyone else who knows), Do you have an easy conversion for those of us who don't use the same measuring system? It would be nice to know how to convert gms, and mls, to cups, teaspoons, tablespoons, ounces, etc. Thanks, Mariann
  23. Hi I recently (at Christmas) purchased a Kitchenaid mixer. It has a 5 qt. bowl and a 325 watt motor. The bowl moves up and down, it is not the flip top one. I bought mine from amazon .com for $199.00 and free shipping, plus it came with a free crock pot, which I wanted to replace anyway, now that I'm gluten-free. So I feel like I got a great deal! I...
  24. Welcome littlemonkeys, I am glad that your husband is getting the help he needs in finding out what is wrong with him. If he does have Celiac Disease, please try to find a pediatric GI for your daughter (or the same one your husband sees if he sees children). You don't want to keep her 100% gluten free before testing, but I know how hard it is to watch...
  25. Thanks for your responses guys, I really appreciate it. I am going to be eating out on Wednesday of next week. My daughter was invited to her friends 5th birthday party at our local Perko's. They don't have very many gluten-free foods and they serve bread with everything. I've tried asking them not to put the bread on the plate, but it has never...
