ARCHIVED Confused By Test Results
gf4life replied to simply's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Also, Dr. Fine is a guest speaker at many celiac disease support groups. If you go to the Celiac.com Forum home page, and look at the calendar events, he is listed half a dozen times for speaking engagements across the US in the next 3 months. Just thought I'd mention it. Mariann -
ARCHIVED Question About Calcium Supplements
gf4life replied to gf4life's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks Sarah. I guess I need to get used to eating the greens you mentioned. I just have never liked them. Do you have any good recipes for them that would make them taste better. And do you think I would have to eat the whole leaf, or could I juice them in my juicer and still get the nutritional benefits? Sorry to load you up on questions. Why... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy Results
gf4life replied to emsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Celiac Disease is the end stage of Gluten Intolerance. The are both an autoimmune response, and the problem (well, one of them anyway) is that there are no standard tests for doctors to perform that will find gluten intolerance in it's early stages. There is a test though, that is offered by Enterolab, but it is new and not accepted fully in conventional... -
ARCHIVED Confused By Test Results
gf4life replied to simply's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I know that the tTg test should be done on IgA, unless you are IgA deficient, since the IgG is not as specific and won't pick up Celiac Disease as easy. I felt the same way as you about Enterolab at first. I was of course skeptical. But he has been mentioned in some very reliable publications on Gluten Intolerance. To name a few: Wheat Free, Worry... -
ARCHIVED Question About Calcium Supplements
gf4life posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was wondering if anyone knows if Citracal Plus with Magnesium is gluten free. I know that Caltrate is, but it is not casein free. I have been feeling like I should take a calcium/magnesium supplement since I am not eating any dairy, and have not liked the feeling that my stomach gets when I take the Citracal, but maybe it's the B vitamins in it, or the... -
ARCHIVED Trying To Understand Tests
gf4life replied to Nshea's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Stacie, Did Dr. Fine ever get back to you regarding the issue of "0" tTg? Just wondering. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Daughter Diagnosed In 2002
gf4life replied to KellyR's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
How old is your daughter? I only ask, since the older they are the harder it is to get them to change their diet. If she is old enough, you need to sit her down and explain to her that although it is hard, she needs to stay gluten free for health reasons. If she is old enough, show her some information regarding the disease. Remember that she will eventually... -
ARCHIVED Confused By Test Results
gf4life replied to simply's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Simply, No you do not have to be on gluten to have your total IgA tested. And it is possible to have a weak positive and still be IgA deficient. Although after two weeks off gluten those first tests for Gliadin are not accurate. You have to have been on gluten for them to show anything, even then you never know. I tested negative on all the bloodtests... -
ARCHIVED Very Frustrated
gf4life replied to gf4life's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, I can't get the kids in to see the doctor until April. I checked on the cost of the Prometheus tests and it is $290 for the blood tests, but if they are negative then they run the gene test. The cost for both is $730! Times three, it just makes my head spin. Even with the 25% discount for credit card pre-payment it is still $1650! I think I would... -
ARCHIVED Should My 11 Month Old Be Tested?
gf4life replied to on-belay's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would ask for testing if it were my child. They will do a blood test called a Celiac Panel, if the doctor is knowledgable enough. Then if those are positive, then they will want to do a biopsy. If you don't care about having a diagnosis from a conventional doctor and just want to know if gluten is causing your duaghter's problem, then I would highly... -
I'm sort of really angry right now. I've been waiting for my kid's blood test results for 5 1/2 weeks. I really felt like this was way too long, and I kept calling the doctors office. They kept saying some of the tests were pending. Well the doctor ordered the full Celiac Panel including gene testing from Prometheus labs. It is the only lab he trusts...

ARCHIVED Gf Cold Cereals
gf4life replied to aldociao's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Libby, I've not tried the Puffin's Peanut Butter. Peanuts seem to bother me, so I'm avoiding them and I've never cared for PB for breakfast. I like the Puffin's Cinnamon, and Original. Again I'm not sure if they are okay for us, because of the oat flour, they are not considered gluten-free. The Puffin's Honey Rice flavor is okay, and the only one... -
ARCHIVED Confused And A Bit Scared
gf4life replied to j9n's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sarah is right. Conventional mediacal tests for Celiac Disease cannot rule out celiac disease. They can only confirm it 100% or tell you that you might not have it, but they can't ever say that you don't have it with 100% certainty! Although most doctors will say that they believe the tests, don't be fooled. This is a quote from my Enterolab diagnosis... -
ARCHIVED Dorritos
gf4life replied to hillary-h's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most Doritos say if they contain wheat on the label, somewhere near the nutritional information. The ones that say they contain wheat are NOT gluten free. Some of the flavors are gluten-free, but produced on the same lines, so if you have a reaction you may not want to eat them. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Not Sure What To Do
gf4life replied to ciacci's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You can have both ulcerative colitis and celiac disease. Insist that you be tested. It doesn't hurt the doctor to test you. Make sure they give you a full Celiac Panel. This should consist of the following: *Gliadin IgA Antibodies *Gliadin IgG Antibodies *Anti-endomysial IgA *Anti-human Tissue Transglutaminase IgA *Total Serum IgA If... -
ARCHIVED Reactions To Gluten
gf4life replied to tagger's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Tagger, I was reading somewhere around here that some B vitamins are made from yeast. Are you sensitive to yeast? That might be it, but who knows. I don't take very many vitamin supplements since before I went gluten-free they made me feel awful, but since going gluten-free I haven't bothered to find a good gluten-free supplement. I don't like to take... -
Clare, Outback Streakhouse also has another gluten-free dessert. Their Sydney's Sinful Sundae is gluten-free. It is vanilla ice cream rolled in toasted coconut, covered in chocolate sauce and topped with whipped cream. If you don't want the chocolate sauce they could leave it off for you... Mariann

ARCHIVED Adjustment Period?
gf4life replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Deb, You sound a lot like me a few weeks ago. I kept accidently getting some gluten into my diet, and it took a few weeks, some digestive enzymes and a major elimination of many foods (yes, many gluten-free foods) to get my system to calm down. It can take up to two weeks for gluten to get out of your system with each accidental ingestion. How... -
ARCHIVED Vinegar
gf4life replied to lpoglitsch's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The only way it is safe is if you can confirm that the source of the vinegar was gluten free (like corn), and not from a gluten grain like wheat, or barley, which are much more common forms of distilled vinegar. You can call the company and ask if you have a particular brand in mind (or in hand!). Otherwise, it is best to just use the vinegars you listed... -
ARCHIVED Confusion
gf4life replied to judy04's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Donna, The stool test can be used while gluten-free, but it really is just to check to see if you are getting any accidental gluten. The antibodies will continue to be present for a while in your intestine while gluten free. The length of time varies for each person, but for a few months at least. Dr. Fine does not recommend going off gluten for... -
I bring my own food anyway. I can't risk getting sick over their food. I bring a big purse (don't know if your a guy or girl), I only have my wallet and my keys in the bag, and then I fill the rest with snacks. I being a bag of popcorn from home and some gluten-free candy, or any other food that I can wrap up and fit in the bag. Plus some bottled water...

ARCHIVED Reactions To Gluten
gf4life replied to tagger's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Connie, I missed you posting the list, since that was the week I was out of town. I don't mind you reposting it. I hadn't gotten around to it. I also found a lot of things to add to it, from the book Dangerous Grains by James Braly and Ron Hoggan. They list over 200 symptoms and related diseases to gluten intolerance in the back of the book. ... -
ARCHIVED Digestive Enzymes?
gf4life replied to gf4life's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That would be asuming I could get my doctor to believe me that I am gluten intolerant and run additional deficiency tests. I'm on my own as far as the medical field is concerned. I just wanted to say also, that we can't always trust vitamin/supplement companies when asking about the gluten-free status of their products. I contacted the Flora... -
ARCHIVED Recovering After Accidental Ingestion
gf4life replied to ham&ex's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It was suggested to me (by someone on this board) that the digestive enzyme glucoamylase may speed up the recovery time from a gluten accident. I don't know if it works, and I haven't tried it, but it can't hurt to try it, right? If it does work then maybe you can cut the recovery time. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Gf Cold Cereals
gf4life replied to aldociao's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Aldo, Maybe the puffs are contaminated by being puffed in the same place as the wheat, but they do not consider the corn flakes contaminated since the corn flakes are made in a different plant. But consider this. There was a problem last year with the Natures Path/Envirokids cereals& bars being cross contaminated. since they are run on the same...
