  1. Hi Gillian, I am so sorry to hear you are still having problems. I hope that the colonoscopy gives you some answers. I just wanted to say that I'm here for you to just chat if you want to e-mail me. God bless, Mariann
  2. That funny! If they only knew how many people really have an intolerance and might stop buying thier foods they might put together a list!!
  3. Hi Traci, Welcome to the board! I hope I can answer your questions adequately. Okay, at least one parent has to carry the gene to have the child get true Celiac Disease. There are forms of non-Celiac gluten intolerance, but they are only now starting to realise this and it is not currently being researched to my knowledge. (I can e-mail you a...
  4. You know, I've just recently started telling people about the fact that I have celiac disease. They don't understand Celiac Disease, or gluten intolerance, but they do understand allergy. I just say that I am allergic to gluten, which is part of wheat and also casein which is part of milk, and they seem to understand. And I know it bugs some celiacs since...

    ARCHIVED Communion

Newbie, I was just thinking (and I'm not sure about the way your church works) but would it be possible for you to take a sip of the blood first, before they priest dips the body in the blood? I mean it might be wierd always being first in line, but it might be a solution. You will get contaminated by the small particles of gluten in the blood. Anyhow...
  6. I can eat the Puffin's Honey Rice (gluten-free-no oat flour) without a reaction. So I think it might be the oats. I can try again with the McCann's oats and see, it also might be that the oat flour they use is contaminated. But the fact remains that the jury is still out on whether oats are safe for Celiacs and I can live without oats. There are enough...

    ARCHIVED Communion

Hi Newbie, I know how you feel about not being able to take communion at church. I tried "just a little crumb" too, and got very ill. It can take a long time to feel better after an accident too. I just really want to be able to not feel down too often. I have a ladies meeting tonight at church and it is a dessert potluck. I tried to make a gluten...
  8. Hi Dallan, My kids are also big jerky fans. You can make a good gluten-free marinade to flavor the meat in by mixing some spices with some wheat free soy sauce (or tamari sauce). You can pretty much mix it to be whatever flavor you like. Peppered, garlic, teriyaki flavored, what ever you like. It sounds like you already know how to dry it in the oven...
  9. Kelly, I've only been gluten-free for a little over 6 weeks, and when I first went gluten-free I was eating oatmeal. I didn't notice an obvious reaction to McCann's oats, and I was also eating some of Barbara's Puffin's cereal that contained some oat flour. I did have a few other gluten accidents, so I really can't say if I had a reaction then or not,...
  10. On of the common things that contain hidden glutens that most people don't realise is fresh meats, especially chicken, turkey and pork. The manufacturer adds broth and/or natural flavoring to them to make them taste better and be more tender when cooked. Many times these added ingredients have gluten in them.
  11. That may be true, to a degree, but odds are that some of them are actually undiagnosed Celiacs. I only know of one other Celiac in my town, and statistically there should be around 80 or more. So there have got to be quite a few... Mariann
  12. See, now my husband thinks I'm crazy, that everyone I meet does NOT have Celiacs, but I do run across a lot of people who I think should be tested. Now I've only mentioned celiac disease to a few of them, but I invariably get a response to the tune of "oh, I don't have a problem with wheat. I eat it all the time." Yeah, well so did I! It seems like most...
  13. I actually did give blood this last Saturday. I checked the guidelines of who could donate, and since they check your iron when you get there, I figured I'd probably get turned away, but I would try anyhow. Well this was the first time that my iron level was up. I was actually quite excited to know that. I certainly feel like I'm absorbing more nutrients...
  14. My allergist had no idea how to test for Celiac Disease. So unless you have a better allergist, I would suggest you find yourself a different doctor who could test you. All of the symptoms you mentioned could be caused by gluten intolerance, but they could also be something else. You should ask for a Celiac Panel, and that should include the following...
  15. 1. Female 2. Caucasian 3. Symptoms started before age 4, 31 at time of diagnosis. 4. 185 lbs. 5'2" before diagnosis, 6 weeks into diet 178 lbs. still 5'2" (hasn't been a year yet) 5. doctor-diagnosed by Enterolab (Dr. Fine) in 2003; conventional blood tests and biopsy were negative 6. upper gi, lower gi, intestinal ultrasound, endoscope without biopsy...
  16. Thanks Aldo. That was quite a list of foods. I agree that magnesium is very important. Magnesium deficiency is actually quite a big problem in America and has gone widely unrecognized. Most people get adequate calcium, but without the magnesium it doesn't matter. Since I have been dairy free for more than 4 months now, I really feel like I need to supplement...
  17. Well maybe I can help you out. This includes all dairy products not just cheese. This is from food list Open Original Shared Link that you can print out if you want to. Always check the labels though, just to make sure, and eliminate (I suggest crossing it off your list so you don't accidently get it again) anything that seems to bother you. DAIRY...
  18. I can't really help you out here, since I am casein intolerant and can't eat cheese, but I do know that blue cheese is pretty much off limits, since the mold they use to make it "blue" is often harvested from bread, and thus is not gluten-free. As for the other questions someone else will have to help you out there. Mariann
  19. If you are looking for regular vitamins, not chewables the options open up even more. 20. Open Original Shared Link Use the link above to find the post that will let you do just that! Jessica (angel_jd1) is very good at keeping this going. We all need to do our part to get the labeling laws secured for the benefit of those current on the gluten-free diet and those to come! As for the corn pops, I would check the manufacture date, instead...
  21. Hi Geri, The Gliadin AB tests are not totally specific to celiac disease. This means that although the high IgA reading could point to celiac disease, it doesn't necessarily. You should stay on a normal diet though, since the biopsy is the next step. Do not let the doctor tell you that going gluten free before the biopsy will not mess up your test...
  22. Laurie could you pass on the information about the summer camp. My 9 year old really wants to go, and should he test positive and need gluten free, I would not want to send him to a "regular" summer camp. Thanks. God bless, Mariann
  23. I ordered the tests. It has just been an emotional roller coaster the last two days. I went out and got more gluten foods for my kids to eat during the next week. I hadn't gotten very many, since I thought the Prometheus tests would come back soon. I just have to keep the kids from eating too many of my gluten-free foods, and keep them on gluten...
  24. Hi Jules, According to the book Dangerous Grains by James Braly and Ron Hoggan this could be. In the "Comprehensive List of Gluten-Associated Medical Conditions on pg. 197 it says: I hope this helps. My brother also has liver problems and digestive problems, but will not get tested for celiac disease. I keep trying to get him to at least try the...
  25. Crisco oils and shortening is supposed to be gluten-free. others are: Olive Oils are naturally gluten-free, so as long as they are plain they are fine Spectrum Organic Shortening Grapeseed oil is good too Butter and most margarines are gluten-free, but if you are avoiding dairy be very careful as butter is out and so are most brands of margarine...
