  1. That is interesting. I learned something new today! I suppose the secretor status test would probably be a saliva test? If it didn't show your blood type, then you are a non-secretor? Is that how it works?
  2. Hi Linda, boy it took a long time for someone to answer your question, huh? Oh well. Here is what I have to say, the reason that gum base is on the forbidden list is that not all gum bases are the same. Each company is going to have a different formula and so some will be gluten-free, while others are not. To be on the safe side it was put on the...
  3. I'm glad to know that McCormick's pure vanilla extract is gluten-free. I e-mailed them and they never got back to me, but I did see on a gluten-free food list that all their extracts are gluten-free. I just ordered some gluten-free vanilla powder. I am hoping it works good. They said it gives a more true vanilla flavor. I hope so. I really don't care...
  4. Kathleen, are you sure they are the same? I get corn flour, which is finely ground corn meal. It is what is used to make tortillas and tamales, when you want a finer texture than regular corn meal can provide. It is certainly not the same as corn starch. You can buy it in the regular grocery store, but it is usually called masa flour. Mariann
  5. jaimek, Just make sure the buckwheat noodles/flour is 100% pure buckwheat. Some brands add other flours into them and that might make them not gluten free. Mariann
  6. I heard Atkins are gluten-free, but since I can't have dairy either I get ANDI bars. They are really good and gluten free and casein free. I get them at the Gluten Free Pantry, where you can buy them by the case, but they are still pricey at $2.00 a bar. Mariann
  7. Kyle, Please ask for testing before you try the gluten free diet. I am speaking from personal experience, it is much harder to get accurate testing, and also causes more damage to your body to go back on gluten after being gluten free. You have to be on a normal to high gluten diet for tests to be somewhat accurate, and even then sometimes the tests fail...
  8. Babs, One negative test result almost 10 years ago is not enough to rule out gluten intolerance. You may not have benn producing enough antibodies then, but may be having a worse reaction now. You should be tested again. With the strong family history your doctors shouldn't give you a hard time. Celiac can start at any age, and please do not let...
  9. gaceff, I'm in the same boat as you right now. I can not eat any kind of fruit or vegetable without having horrible symptoms of severe fatigue, gas, bloating, and lower abdominal pain. I've actually been more constipated though, and less diarrhea. It used to swing form one or the other. I have pretty much tried one soft cooked veggie after another...
  10. Hi Sarah, Welcome to the board. First off, there is a whole spectrum of levels of gluten intolerance, and research has really only touched the tip of the iceburg, so to speak. Gluten sensitivity is one of those grey areas, as far as the medical profession is concerned. Obviously you are having a reaction to gluten. Even those with clear symptoms...
  11. Casein is also added to a lot of other products, so keep reading those labels. Some things to look for, on the labels of food products, when eliminating dairy 100% are : whey, sodium caseinate, any other form of caseinate, and of course if the allergen label says milk, or of there is any added butter, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, cream, etc. Non-dairy does...
  12. Suzn, Your body needs many different enzymes to digest many different kinds of foods. With all the damage our intestines have gone through as celiacs we sometimes need a little help to aid in digestion. so digestive enzymes will help you get more out of your food. I certainly am not digesting well, only three weeks into the gluten-free diet (following...
  13. It is the same thing. It is all gluten intolerance, but has been called many things. Celiac Disease, Celiac Sprue, Non-tropical Sprue, Gluten Intolerance, Gluten Sensitivity, these are just a few of the most common names. It doesn't really matter what you call it, it just means your body can't digest gluten and damages your intestines when you do, resulting...
  14. Thanks Sarah. I suspect I am a non-secretor also. But I haven't bothered to test for that yet. Too busy with the celiac testing... I'm still going to check into the enzymes. I'll be going to the healthfood store on Friday, and will see about getting some then. Thanks everyone for your support. God bless, Mariann
  15. Sarah, I got a referral to a pediatric GI for my kids and he ordered the gene test through Prometheus labs. They have a special form that you can use to get the blood sent to their labs and they do the tests right. Your doctor can request those forms if they do not normally use them. I feel really blessed, the day we were in the office, the doctor...
  16. Hi, Unfortunately everyone is different and so there is not set time frame for how soon the symptoms will completely disappear. It sounds as if you are feeling better, but since you were still getting contaminated by the b/c pills until last month, that was probably the reason for the diarrhea to remain. Now that you are (probably) totally gluten free...
  17. Is it possible for you to talk to her doctor? He/she may stop looking since they found the U/C, but she has far too many symptoms of Celiac and Ulcerative Colitis is not terribly uncommon in Celiacs. When the disease goes undiagnosed for too long there are many other diseases that it can cause. Please continue to try to get her tested, or to speak to her...
  18. Alexa, If you want to know sooner what is wrong, you could still do the Enterolab tests. The complete panel of tests includes the Gluten sensitivity stool test, tissue transglutaminase stool test, intestinal malabsorption test, gluten sensitivity gene test, and for a limited time, free milk sensitivity stool test for $349. Even though you have been...
  19. Did your husband also have an Endoscopic Exam? (Tube down the throat to the stomach and intestines) Just wondering. Also both your husband and sons tests could have been altered by the fact that they have been gluten free for so long. I would have the entire family gene tested. Given the history and marked improvement on the gluten-free diet, any one...
  20. This is from a posting by Connie R-E in Baking and Cooking Forum under "Valentine's Day". She is talking about the Smarties Valentine Hearts, but I have seen Smarties on gluten free candy list before. They should be fine. You could always call the company to double check. What are the ingredients you are questioning anyhow? Maybe we can figure...
  21. That is really interesting about the B vitamins. I have a lot of allergies. Severe for house dust and Alfalfa, minor for almost everything else on the list. I recently drank some tea, Celestial Seasonings Tension Tamer with B vitamins, and felt very sick within an hour. I know I had been gluten-free that day, so it sort of threw me off to try to figure...
  22. The milk protein you are referring to is casein, right? In which case this is a lifelong intolerance. The reason being, that casein is a similar molecular structure to wheat gluten and therefor your body will see it as the same and you will have similar symptoms as if you were eating gluten. I don't think it causes the same intestinal damage, but symptoms...
  23. Thanks Lily, would love to be able to see a nutritionalist, but in order to get my insurance to pay I have to have an "official" diagnosis. Another reason I pushed for the biopsy! I can't get my doctor to run any blood tests or bone scans or anything. She doesn't believe I have celiac disease. I know I do, and I have my Enterolab diagnosis to back me...
  24. Well, I feel like I'm stuck, sometimes... I mean, I have an HMO and have to get a referral. I feel like one of these days my GP is going to say no, so I just try a little harder with my GI specialist. It would be nice for others in her practice if she would learn more about the disease, as there are quite a few undiagnosed Celiacs in her practice. ...
  25. I was wondering if you substituted corn flour (masa flour) for the rice flour in the tempura batter, and maybe added a bit more to make it thicker, would it work for the corn dogs? Or does it have to have other stuff mixed into it? I do have a recipe for mini corn dogs, but I have not used it yet, and I have also not used any of the bean flours. ...
