ARCHIVED I Don't Want My Husband To Go gluten-free But Will I Still Be Safe?
violentlyserene replied to HS7474's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'd rather deal with a mixed kitchen than an unhappy husband. It's a bit of a pain sure, but I don't mind. He's careful to stick to our protocols so I can eat safely and that's all I need. Fortunately, a mixed kitchen works for us so we don't need to go more extreme. The exact set up depends on your home and your situation but in general a storage... -
ARCHIVED Old Country Buffet
violentlyserene replied to violentlyserene's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
We only go once a year so i barely remember what's there but there should be fresh fruit. Thank you, I can't believe i didn't think of that! A friend suggested they may have baked potatoes as well which would be great. I'd love something substantial but i eat worse at home so a potato, ice cream and fruit is certainly good enough for me. My family knows... -
ARCHIVED Old Country Buffet
violentlyserene replied to violentlyserene's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
It's not my choice of places but I'm doing the best I can. I'm definitely calling ahead, just not sure what to ask them about. Asking for gluten free stuff is likely to get me blank stares but if I can be specific on things, it should be better. I won't suffer from eating there because I don't react and I'm extra careful the rest of the time so I can keep... -
ARCHIVED Old Country Buffet
violentlyserene replied to violentlyserene's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
When I searched, i found a couple mentions of people eating at OCB which is why I asked here. It had been done by members already and I was hoping to find their advice. It is a risk and one that I accept for a once a year event. My goal at this point is to mitigate it, not find to ways around eating there at all. -
ARCHIVED Old Country Buffet
violentlyserene replied to violentlyserene's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I'm aware of all the potential issues and since not eating isn't an option, I'm trying to be proactive and make it as safe as possible. -
We're going to Old country buffet tomorrow for a family thing. Since we'll be there for a while in a large group with everyone else eating, i'd really like to find something to eat so the attention doesn't stay on me and my lack of food. We only go once a year so I'm not even sure what they have and can call and ask about. Those of you who risk buffets...

ARCHIVED What Does Super Sensitive Mean?
violentlyserene replied to Di2011's topic in Super Sensitive People
Food! I've been eating a whole lot of stir fries and kabobs (both actual kabobs on a stick and the stuff I'd put on the kabobs just roasted in a draining pan). Potato shepherd's pie is a favorite here as well. -
ARCHIVED Ready To Start Trying - Books On Celiac/pregnancy To Recommend?
violentlyserene replied to aming44's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There aren't any. I looked extensively when I was diagnosed because we'd already been trying but all of my drs say it's perfectly safe to get pregnant as long as you are gluten free. The only problems I know of come in with irregular cycles but that can be dealt with like problems caused by other things. I do recommend Taking Charge of Your Fertility. The... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Grocery Guide
violentlyserene replied to violentlyserene's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks all for the recommendations. I think I will go with Cecelia's this time and see how I like it. -
ARCHIVED How Much Gluten Is Too Much?
violentlyserene replied to violentlyserene's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It does indeed! I'll go look it up. Celiac is so much more serious than I ever realized. If I hadn't gone looking for specifics, I'd have never known that eating gluten would put me at risk for so much or how much contamination really matters, esp with a gi dr that doesn't seem to understand the implications of celiac. Even trying to be careful, albeit... -
ARCHIVED What Does Super Sensitive Mean?
violentlyserene replied to Di2011's topic in Super Sensitive People
If they ate it, certainly! If they don't react to anything less than that, does that mean they can put themselves in the average celiac category and be careful or is that more towards non reactive celiacs who need to be super careful? I seem to have missed your point. I'm curious since that's roughly where I fall right now and can't tell whether I'm... -
ARCHIVED What Does Super Sensitive Mean?
violentlyserene replied to Di2011's topic in Super Sensitive People
Where do celiacs who don't react to anything but something like a piece of cake fall on that spectrum? -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Grocery Guide
violentlyserene replied to violentlyserene's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you! This is definitely not intended to be a permanent crutch, just a help. I'm going to my mom's for thanksgiving and am hoping a quick reference would be helpful for all those iffy ingredients. -
I'm looking at getting a grocery guide to make life a tad easier but I'm not sure of the difference between the available books. If you have one or the other, how do you like it? Is it accurate? I expect a few corrections since that's just the nature of food manufacturing but I'd like something I can rely on without checking the website every time I look...

ARCHIVED Purposely Glutened
violentlyserene replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been staring at frozen eggrolls for weeks. Fortunately, I'd have to actually get to the register and home and by then, rationality would take over. KFC really does a number on me too. I'd swear the boxes were talking to me. The only thing that I can't resist is Wendy's chilli. I love it and while it's technically gluten free, the variety of possible... -
ARCHIVED Using Rice Flour
violentlyserene replied to lemontree1's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I keep sweet rice flour and regular rice flour around for pancakes, fritters, brownies, coating pans, etc. -
ARCHIVED Wedding Shower Problem
violentlyserene replied to AngieJoy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It sounds like your nephew is really stressed about the wedding and not being himself. I wouldn't worry too much about too much. I wouldn't have called yet but it really wasn't that big of a deal. -
ARCHIVED Do I Have Celiac Disease
violentlyserene replied to contrarianrevolution's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You should see your dr. That is a symptom of depression which certainly can be apart of celiac symptoms. Make sure your see your dr before trying gluten-free since testing usually requires that you are eating gluten. -
ARCHIVED Shared Kitchens?
violentlyserene replied to TwitchyMcLurcherson's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm still working out the kinks in all this but I have created a separate section of the kitchen for myself. Gluten stuff is a different color or type than gluten free and they aren't stored together. Something like a big rubbermaid tub might be helpful for storing food if you can't get cubboard space. I use one for gluten-free dishes. Anything that I've... -
ARCHIVED How Much Gluten Is Too Much?
violentlyserene replied to violentlyserene's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wow. Thank you, that's exactly what I needed to hear. 6mgs seems like a lot still to me when the only gluten is in terms of contamination that is on microscopic levels. It's starting to sink in at least. -
ARCHIVED How Much Gluten Is Too Much?
violentlyserene replied to violentlyserene's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thank you for understanding. I fear I came off as a bit of a lunatic in my desperation to get somewhere but I do understand that there is no real answer. The study you mention is one of the ones I've looked at over and over. The best thing I found yesterday was a blog article somewhere that does the math and essentially, it breaks down into showing that even... -
It's understandable to feel that way. I try to celebrate gluten as a fad because it means I have better access to foods I didn't have before. Mostly I've been eating unprocessed foods lately but it's so so good to be able to have cookies or saltine or bagels whenever I get the urge. Celiac/gluten intolerance advocates do a lot and I do not want to discount...

ARCHIVED Gut Healing Support
violentlyserene replied to meinelse's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was doing some reading on this today and I don't really have any answers unfortunately. A lot of what I read came from Heidi of adventures of a gluten free mom and her journey to heal herself and her family. The clinic they went to suggests a few different tests to rule out any related obstacles (gut flora was the new one I've never heard of). The clinic... -
ARCHIVED How Much Gluten Is Too Much?
violentlyserene replied to violentlyserene's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
No worries here about just giving up. While I have weekly occurrences of desperately wanting something and sometimes I swear gluten foods talk to me, I don't give in. The cookies I ate was a very purposeful choice for the sake of my future sanity. I now know that I do have an unpleasant reaction and that helps a lot in continuing to resist eating gluten particularly... -
ARCHIVED How Much Gluten Is Too Much?
violentlyserene replied to violentlyserene's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've done a lot more reading and I think I've finally gotten somewhere. The "what does it look like" issue was surprisingly hard to find. I found one article that took a piece of bread as an example. It has something like times the level of acceptable gluten so based on that, even a crumb is too much. When you take into consideration all the possible places...
