  1. After reading all this I feel compelled to point out the actual Catholic teaching in what happens during the Consecration at Mass. During the Consecration, the bread and wine are completely, totally, and utterly changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus. The wheat in the host, including the gluten, is gone. It does not exist any more. I realize that...
  2. I tend to get more C than D these days, though the D has never really left. And ther ever present "G" (gas), if you understand me. Ed
  3. I'm 5'3" or 5'4", but I do get it honestly. My mother is 5'0 1/2" and my sister is 4'11 1/2". Ed
  4. Kaiti, There's a Giant in Owings that sells Bob's Red Mill products, along with other gluten-free foods. Weis aslo carries some too, but its selection isn't much. Ed
  5. Almost all Irish here! MY great great grandfather on my dad's side married a girl from Toronto though. He was the one who dropped the "O" from the family name too. Ed
  6. My wife is the one with the acid reflux. When she gets an attack she munches on Tums as if they were candy. Ed
  7. I think everyone here has gone through a similar experience. My wife does get annoyed at times if I mention my celiac. My side of the family doesn't understand exactly how I got it. (I can lay every single penny I have that each one has the gene and probably win big.) What I do know is that people are worth more that they are generally treated, and...
  8. I have bouts of fatigue also, and I do dring a good bit of soda to help keep me going. But I do have to admit that it isn't constant. Also, many times when I'm doing something the adrenaline kick in helps, and afterwards I'm bushed. So I do like to keep busy . It is interesting to read that fatigue is a common occurance in celiac disease. I contributed...
  9. Doug, Your son's symptoms are amazingly similar to mine during my first two years. I had little or no weight gain, stunted growth, diarrhea or floating stools (which I still occasionally get), and looking completely and utterly malnourished. And I ate and ate and ate. Yes, he should get tested. ( I never was tested-- they weren't available way back...
  10. My symptoms are boring these days compared to what I've read here....some diarrhea maybe, maybe constipation, and lots of gas. I do have a tendency to feel tired at times and I do have occasional insomnia, but I'm not sure I can thank my celiac for that--v there are other credible possibilites. Ed
  11. I finally went up to 150 pounds, though I believed I list weight recently. I am now a size 32 waist after being a 34 for a while. BTW, I'm 5'6", though my wife swears that I'm shorter than that. I also have a "cast-iron" stomach, though I've had problems with diarrhea, gas, gas, gas, and still more gas . My wife constantly complains about it, but...
  12. Sally. No, they don't sell the meat. What I do is bring my own bread. I don't see why anyone in Subway wouldn't make a sandwich for you if you bring in your own bread and explain why. Ed
  13. Ally, I don't think you'd want to try the banana dirt LOL Back then kids were taken off almost everything and were fed a diet of bananas and dry curd cottage cheese. After they started putting on weight and growing ther were slowly introduced to other, usually gluten infested, foods. Ed
  14. HI Lisa Ann, I know, there was almost no information on it, and that was the common treatment back then. I had the same treatment. Of course, I complained all the time about bread, annd it came to the point that my parents didn't even bother with it when it came to me. Of course, I continued eating the spaghetti, cake, and other gluten-filled goodied...
  15. Is there anyone here that diagnosed with celiac disease when they were very young? I happenned to be diagnosed way back in 1959 by my pediatritian who just happenned to hear about it. There were NO tests, samples, are anything like that done at all. My growth was stunted since I was weaned and had drastically lost weight, and this was the only possibility...
  16. That line about being a cafeteria manager got to me. One of my jobs is clerking at a Subway, with all that good food and all that bread that I bake but can't eat. Fortunately I do at times remember to bring some of my own bread with me so I can eat a sandwich. Staying gluten-free isn't easy, especially with a wife who insists on keeping the...
  17. Not only is there a lot ot Tradition surrounding the Eucharist, but also the teaching is very different from other Christian faiths that teach it. Catholic teaching is that the wheat in the Host is totally replaced by Jesus'. presence. In other Christian faiths, it isn't. It may sound like a technicality, but it is a veryv important difference here. ...
