My dad made me really angry yesterday. I've tried to explain celiac to him. He refuses to believe anything. Here are some comments he made to me: "You're on the borderline of being ridiculous, and I take issue with that." "Doctors have a name for everything these days. Back when I was a kid we didn't have all these convoluted so-called diseases. It...

My boys (ages 10, 7, and 2) are having blood drawn today. I'm so anxious about the results. They are having the genetic portion as well.

I just called the manufacturer Roxane Labs to ask, and they told me that they do not give out any information about the ingredients of their drugs.

Thanks!

ARCHIVED Switching Kitchen To Gluten-Free
Schatz replied to TooManyHats's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I use reusable bags for sandwiches. If you go to reuseit.com you can see what kind I use. They are similar to the SnackTaxi bags and I also have the Wrap-n-Mat. I have washed these on my sanitary cycle. Is that enough? Do I need to get rid of them? Sigh, they're expensive (for me) so it'd be great if I could keep them. -
ARCHIVED Please Weigh In On The "new Pans/new Spoons/etc" Issue For Me
Schatz replied to slee11211's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
How about my crock pot? Should I replace it? I read to de-season my cast iron pans and then reseason. How do I deseason them? Is there a way to do it with using the oven's self clean mode? Last time I tried to use the self clean the cabinets next to my oven turned brown. -
Mostly baked goods as I know I can adapt most regular recipes. However, if you have a great gluten-free cookbook for regular meals that be great too.

How do you deal with your extended family when they roll their eyes because they think you've gone overboard with the issue of being completely gluten-free and try to avoid CC? What do you do when you visit their homes? Do you take your own food?

ARCHIVED Wheat Free But Not Gluten Free
Schatz replied to Schatz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
He will be tested, and in the mean time I'm having him eat small portions of wheat as well. He ate a grilled cheese with regular bread last night and didn't get a stomach ache. He did have problems sleeping though. -
My boys are going to be tested and they will have the genetic testing as well. That will give me some peace of mind. In the mean time they have to continue eating gluten, and having it in my house makes me shudder. I want to get it all out! There is no way I can have gluten in my kitchen. With three young boys who do not understand or remember to wipe counters...

ARCHIVED Confused Reading Labels

I'm not. I'll let my boys drink since they need to continue eating gluten until they are tested. -

ARCHIVED Confused Reading Labels
Schatz replied to Newbee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for that info. The no caramel color is on the sheet of what to avoid I received from my Dr. As for the Ovaltine it's only the Rich Chocolate flavor that might be considered safe. -
ARCHIVED Confused Reading Labels
Schatz replied to Newbee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just looked at this list. I saw Ovaltine and Carnation Instant Breakfast. Both are on the list as gluten-free. However, just this morning I read the ingredient list, and I know that the Strawberry flavor Instant drink mix has wheat listed right on the label. Also, Ovaltine has caramel color listed. It was my understanding that caramel color is from malt... -
ARCHIVED Benefits Of Testing
Schatz posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If I plan on switching the whole family to a gluten-free diet, what are the benefits to having the children tested? The cons are: 1) May have a false negative anyway 2) If diagnosis is on paper, they then have a pre-exisiting condition for future insurance issues.(Does it affect getting a life insurance policy?) 3) Extended family will think... -
ARCHIVED Wheat Free But Not Gluten Free
Schatz posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'd like to have my sons tested with a blood panel. The thing is my son tested positive for a wheat allergy about 2 years ago. He hasn't eaten wheat since....at least not much. He gets a bad stomach ache. He has not been gluten free though. He continued to eat barley, rye, and oat products. Would he have to eat wheat for awhile before having a blood panel... -
Thank you

Thanks everyone. I've been up and down these past few days. One minute I feel optimistic and the next I'm crying as if I'm doomed. I've decided that the whole family will go gluten-free. I'm just trying to decide if I should have them tested first.

ARCHIVED Vitamin D Deficiency--Poll
Schatz replied to PainfulSpaghetti's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I haven't gotten my test result back yet. -
I was just diagnosed on Monday. I'm in shock. I'm sad. I'm angry. I'm angry because my primary Dr. didn't catch this. She is *known* for her integrative medicine approach, and has diagnosed other people I know. I just don't understand how she missed all my symptoms and never thought to test me. I haven't been able to function well since Monday because...

I can't seem to find an answer to whether I need to replace my cast iron pans. Should I?
