  1. DanceswithWolves, I was diagnosed 7 months ago. My mother is 55 years old. She was diagnosed with lupus about 15 years ago. She has lost her hair, her hearing, has cataracts, has 1/2 a stomach left, has vomiting and D every single day, doesn't eat, she has sores all over her body (?DH), she weighs 37 kgs (81.4 pounds) at 5 ft 4. Now let me assure...
  2. My bloating, which was really bad, only went away after 6 months of being gluten free. The culprit was rice and any other starchy food. Found out I have an intolerance to rice. I will still get a bit bloated if I eat too much at one time or have too much chocolate. However the bloating is nowhere near as bad as it was. Only look 3 months pregnant...
  3. Hall100, When I first started the gluten free diet I had the same problem as you. It seemed as if everything caused gas and bloating. Now 7 months down the line things have improved dramatically. The bloating has almost gone completely but only over the last month. I still get gas but only when I eat starchy food or food that I can't digest like...
  4. Elisabet, I have also had problems with cramping and sore muscles. I have found that taking a magnesium supplement helps immensely. I have tested it by coming off the magnesium and the pain and cramps come back, then taking the supplement again and they go away! Worth a try! Yvonne
  5. [Hi Christa, I have been gluten free for 7 months now. I have intolerances to rice, sucrose, chocolate, nuts and seeds, etc. etc. After 7 months I still can't tolerate rice at all. I have noticed over the last 4 weeks that my stomach is no longer swelling up like a balloon if I eat chocolate or sweets. In fact, in general my bloating has improved...
  6. Thank you everyone for your kind words and prayers. At the moment I'm just taking one day at a time. I haven't actually let go yet. The pain is almost physical right now. I want to scream but I am scared I won't stop. So I just keep pushing all the thoughts to the back of the mind. I talk to my brother - well I try - but I start crying and can't...
  7. Thanks so much for all the responses. I was overwhelmed this morning at how many there were and have been sitting here in tears reading them. In tears but they were a comfort and just what I needed. Thanks for your prayers everyone. My faith has helped me a lot the past few weeks. I know God had a reason for taking my brother even if I don't know...
  8. Hi guys, Probably shouldn't be posting this but I'm in need of a bit of support right now and I've had so much from this forum re my gluten problem. I lost my 26 year old brother 3 and a half weeks ago. He had a motorbike accident, hit a tree, had brain surgery and passed away the next day. I'm devastated. Trying to carry on and be strong for my...
  9. Hi Japsnoet, Thanks for the info. I will definitely try and get hold of that book. I have ordered the Bette Hagman books already through Amazon, just waiting for them to arrive but if you say this Lola Workman book is easier then that's the one for me! Thanks again, have a great day. Yvonne
  10. Thanks everyone for the responses! I have sent an email to Breads by Anna to seen if they will send me some. Richard - so far I agree with you. I am ready to give up on bread altogether. Pretty much used to going without it by now. Stephanie, ah the paddle issue - it makes really interesting big holes in my "bread". Thoughout about trying...
  11. Hi guys, I finally went and bought a bread machine realising at last this is a lifelong thing. Well, I have tried every recipe I can get my hands on and they all SUCK. I mean honestly the bread, even toasted, tastes disgusting. I live in South Africa, I cannot get Kinnikinick (sorry no idea how to spell) products or any other read-made gluten-free...
  12. Skar, I have never heard of of the Paleo diet but I also only have a flat stomach when eating a basic meat and veg diet, and having protein at every meal. I also felt that I had more energy and just generally felt better. Rice and potatoes bloat me terribly. Grains definitely do not agree with me However I have looked at the SCD diet and I don't think...
  13. Allison, as Merika says you don't mention anything about gluten. Apart from all the gluten grains - I have allergy/intolerance to rice, nuts, seeds, chocolate, sucrose, potatoes and alcohol. This makes my diet very limited. Like your daughter, I was hungry all the time for months. This has eased a little but I still eat every 3 hours. Not being...
  14. George, I am trying to locate a copy of the book here in South Africa, but failing that, I'll order from Amazon - just takes so long to get here. I ordered some Bette Hageman recipe books about 6 weeks ago and haven't got them yet. Bobcatgirl - you gave me a good laugh! A-holes indeed!! You just put into words what I was thinking! P.S. My bread...
  15. Thanks so much everyone for your responses. I think I have finally made peace with it all and have finally accepted my new gluten-free status. Am going to try out my new bread machine tomorrow. Really looking forward to it! Have a great weekend everyone! Yvonne
  16. Carrie, two weeks ago I would have said the biopsy was absolutely essential for me - I needed proof but after doing my own 'gluten challenge' I don't need the proof. I actually cannot believe how sick I was. It is totally baffling to me how bread could affect me like that after eating it my whole life. This specialist I saw was recommended to me by...
  17. Thanks Nini! I have heard of this book many times. I'll definitely try and get a copy - I want to read it!
  18. Well I finally went to see a specialist yesterday. He sort of listened to me and my long list of symptoms and history. Then he said "so what's the problem?" Does going gluten free make you feel better. I said yes, so he said why do I need anymore proof than that? Hmmmm .... Anyway he booked me in for a biopsy and blood tests for 2nd November...
  19. Hi Janelson, I know exactly how you feel! Do you have any other intolerances? I ask because my stomach swells terribly from other things too - not just gluten. I have intolerances to rice, seeds, chocolate, sucrose and a couple of other things. The rice makes my stomach huge. My swollen stomach makes me feel fat and I'm not. I even have 2 different...
  20. YOU GUYS ARE WONDERFUL! Thank you so much for all your responses. I honestly don't think I would have got through the last 6 months without the support and info on this site. I am feeling a bit better today. Last night I had shooting pains very low down in my lower abdomen that were so bad I thought I was going to pass out or end up in hospital. The...
  21. There is something wrong with me. Apart from Gluten that is! I took my son out for dinner on Friday night to celebrate him doing so well at school. I couldn't find anything on the menu that was 'safe'. I asked for plain meat and french fries. I didn't enjoy it - too worried I was going to get sick. So for some stupid reason I decided to test...
  22. Hi Jen, Don't know about that - its my PMS week - so I was ready to rip her head off. Hee hee.
  23. Wandering Hermit, I know what you mean. This disease makes me a bit like a freak. The other side of the coin is when some people do understand and make a big deal out of going somewhere where you CAN eat. Then I feel really guilty about being such a bother. It embarrasses me. So much easier just to stay at home. I won't go anywhere anymore....
  24. Shrimp? Ok people really are stupid then. Ha ha. The same colleague came and plonked half a melon on my desk to apologise. I was so tempted (just to be evil) to tell her I can't eat it because its got gluten in it. That would have really stumped her and given me revenge. I controlled myself however.
  25. Sorry guys but I have smoke coming out my ears and need to vent to keep my sanity. I am sooooo sick of explaining this disease to people. One of my work colleagues - whom I have explained to at great length and in great detail the consequences of me eating gluten - has just suggested I INTRODUCE IT BACK SLOWLY INTO MY DIET and surely the linsoy bread...
