I just thought I would update now that I have returned from my trip. We had a great time and no food issues. I would find the chef every day when I went to the meal area, and he would give me a 'tour' of what I could and could not eat. On days when there wasn't much to offer (Asian night had soy sauce in everything), he would go get a clean pan and have...

Thanks Laenie - I have been using Lotemax for over 2 years now. It is a steroid drop for allergies - he chose that one over some others because it can be used long term. However, I do have to go in every 6 months or so to make sure the pressure in my eyes is ok (a side-effect of this drop). When he gave me the Restasis, he was concerned that it might not...

ARCHIVED Freaking Out
june27 replied to meggg's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was diagnosed in February and it was quite a surprise to me as well. For me it felt both daunting and overwhelming in the beginning, but it does get better. The newbie section of this forum has a lot of good information to get you started. It is probably worth having your husband read some of the information as well - the path will be a bit easier... -
ARCHIVED How To Self-Diagnose If Doc Will Not Run Tests
june27 replied to june27's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My sisters are all adults.... All 3 of them did ask their doctors to be tested, which tells me they are at least concerned that they might have celiac as well. I do think that testing would be preferable, but if they do not have a doctor that will order the test, and they are not motivated to find a new one, then doing a gluten challenge seems like... -

ARCHIVED How To Self-Diagnose If Doc Will Not Run Tests
june27 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was diagnosed as Celiac about 10 months ago with bloodwork. I have 3 sisters, and after my diagnosis suggested that they each get tested. I sent them all links to websites with information about the disease (1 of them thinks it is very possible that she has it. None of us, even myself, have the 'classic digestive issue' symptoms). I know that at least... -
Well, my primary care referred me to someone. Someone I know told me about another one nearby, but since I have HMO, insurance won't cover him. So, we'll see how this guy is I have been on the Restasis for a few weeks now. No real notable difference yet (not sure how long it takes to work). My eyes still have a fair amount of inflammation and are...

Test results: ANA - positive SSA, SSB, rheumatoid factor, and ESR all negative. I have an appointment with rheumatologist in February. I also talked to my naturopathic doctor - she has some other natural remedies to try to help with the inflammation as well. So, we'll see what happens next.. I will bring up the additional food allergies as well. ...

We are planning a trip to Club Med, Turks - I have been doing a lot of on-line research and it sounds like they should be prepared to deal with gluten-free diet. I was curious if anyone had been (to any Club Med), and what their experience was. I am also curious if there is any special precautions that I should be taking before going - this will be my first...

I figured I'd post an update... I finally made an appt with my primary care doc to ask about a referral to a rheumatologist. I was prepared to fight for this, expecting her to push back (the eye doc has not been very proactive on this front). She was awesome, and all of my worrying was for nothing. She suggested Sjogren's before I had a chance to, and...

Can anyone recommend a good Rheumatologist in the Lowell area?

thanks again for all of the info - i will make sure i am armed before my next doc appt i wish i could blame it on the celiac. unfortunately, i think it was just too early when i got to the manchester airport (i had a 7am flight when i left), and just not awake enough to pay attention to where i parked. first (and hopefully last) time for that.

Gemini - thanks for all of the great info!! I am just returning from a weekend in warm Orlando (and was quite disappointed to return to 30-something degree weather at the airport. To make matters worse, I couldn't for the life of me remember where I had parked, so they had to have someone drive me around to locate my car - how embarrassing!!). Once...

i started seeing a naturopathic doctor earlier this year for chronic allergies and dry/inflamed eyes (that i presumed was due to some systemic issue). after doing a food sensitivity test which i scored off the charts for gluten/wheat/oats, she asked my primary care doctor to run a celiac panel for me. (massachusetts does not recognize naturopathic doctors...

so, i finally got to see my opthamologist. he still thinks that my eyes don't look that bad, but this time he finally understood that i am doing a lot of precautions to make them better. i asked about sjogren's and this time he seemed to think it was likely that i have it. he expressed concern about the inaccuracies of testing (negative doesn't mean...

i have a full eye exam every year. and i see my opthamlologist 2-4 times a year because he needs to monitor the pressure in my eyes when taking these steroid drops. for a while, i was going in more frequently because i was having either erosions, infections, or ulcers. i have been doing all of my eye issues through my opthamologist, and not my primary...

Gemini - I am outside of Boston as well. It is nice to finally have someone who understands the pain associated with dry eyes. Most people just don't get it. Thank you so much for listening, and providing very useful info. When I was first diagnosed with Celiac, I asked my eye doc about Sjogren's - he told me that "my eyes aren't dry enough for it to...

Thank you both for the responses! As I read them today, I realize that I was feeling a bit of self-pity as I wrote last night. Overall, my eyes are doing much better than they were a few years ago (before humidifier and nighttime ointment), but I was feeling a bit disappointed that the dryness is back I was diagnosed with bloodwork. Doctor didn...

Welcome! It definitely is overwhelming to have to overhaul your diet like this. It takes some getting used to, but it does get easier with time. If you don't want to give up all grains, and are feeling adventurous, there are a few gluten-free ones out there that are not mainstream, but are gaining in popularity: 1. buckwheat - I'm not a huge fan...

I have a question regarding dry eyes, but will start with some background info... I was diagnosed with Celiac in February after starting to see a Naturopathic Dr for signs of inflammation. I have suffered with seasonal allergies for at least 25 years, taking prescription drugs for them for almost 20 years, and getting allergy shots for the past 6 years...

ARCHIVED Want To Lose Weight, What Diet Is Best?
june27 replied to hwnw123glutenfree's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
a few years prior to celiac diagnosis, i went on weight watchers. the things that i really liked about it are: - it encourages you to make choices, and helps you to make smart choices (for example, if i have this small bag of chips, then it means i can't have as much for dinner. if i have an apple or veggies instead, then i can have the big dinner i was... -
ARCHIVED A Freedom Diet? Im So Lost!
june27 replied to Dejibo's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
i began my journey in february (diagnosed with celiac, and trying new diet to improve seasonal allergies), and had to give up gluten/oats, dairy, yeast (which is in more things that you might realize, including anything with vinegar), yogurt, and oranges for two months. i completely understand how overwhelming this can be. i find that going back to the... -
ARCHIVED Grass Fed Or Grain Fed-How Do You Find Out?
june27 replied to 123glldd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This has been a very interesting post to read. I have been trying to make better selections when it comes to meat, but the US labeling for meat is so confusing (and in many cases, rather useless). I recently started buying meat from the local farm which is not labeled as 'organic' but I know that they they treat the animals with respect, and they have... -
ARCHIVED Having Trouble Accepting The Diagnosis
june27 replied to scarlet-willow's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome! I was diagnosed with bloodwork about 6 months ago. Like you, I never experienced the "classic" celiac symptoms. I was often a bit bloated, and could belch like crazy, but that was it. I was diagnosed when I went to a naturopathic doctor to see if there were anything that I could do to help my chronic seasonal allergies. I have now been gluten... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Tired
june27 replied to june27's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
@nvsmom - they checked T3 and T4 as well, and both came back "normal" @a1956chill - no they did not check Vit D. i'll have to ask for that next time... @frieze - what is MMA testing? my B12 came back as 335 - but they didn't include the desired range. from what i have seen online, this seems on the lower end of the scale, but it's hard to say without...
