  1. sorry for the delay in responding. tiffany, i feel like i've got no choice but to take the time to research all this - osteoporosis is scary. and though i had plenty of time to prepare for the diagnosis which i had anticipated a year before i got the scan - it was still a big shock (no pun intended). i feel like i've got to do whatever it takes to take...
  2. thanks for the replies. mark, what tiffany said is right. running is weight-bearing - as is any exercise that involves having to bear the entire weight of the body (unlike cycling, swimming, etc.). my doctor did not explicity approve a running regimen, but did give me the green light to exercise (previous appt. in which she diagnosed the osteo, she had...
  3. I'm looking to you all you very knowledgeable folks on this forum once again. Soon after being diagnosed with celiac I found out I have osteoporosis (am now 36) and want to get on a regimen to build up bone density. I understand I have to do weight-bearing exercise and since I live next door to a park, thought running would be the best way to go. I have...
  4. I just noticed that I seem to be having dental enamel loss - my teeth have become translucent. I too am now looking for a dentist that would know how to treat dental enamel hypoplasia secondary to celiac disease, in the New York City area. The Columbia Celiac Disease Center recommended someone in Connecticut - too far for me! If you have any names, please...
  5. just went to my first meetup yesterday
  6. Thanks for all the very useful tips, all. In my two and a half weeks of living gluten-free, I've found myself saying "wheat allergy", "gluten intolerance" and "celiac disease" depending on the company and their clued-in-ness (which I assess very quickly!). Unfortunately I have not yet risen to the challenge of waiters. I did go out once with a large...
  7. It's a simple blood test that includes TSH and various T3 & T4 levels. Be careful about what range they use to diagnose hypo. If you've got symptoms, family history and your TSH is above 2.5, insist on getting treated! Too many doctors rely on outmoded TSH ranges to diagnose hypo!
  8. I am a lifelong lacto-vegetarian who recently went gluten, dairy and soy free. I eat plenty of legumes and nuts, besides rice and corn and do not at all feel like I'm not getting enough protein. From my experience, it is quite doable, though it definitely requires planning and cooking a lot at home. There are plenty others out there who are also gluten...
  9. Oh, I just saw this thread - never thought to look in this forum. I live in NYC! And would love to meet other people with gluten issues. Just got diagnosed. lauriechick, Is the vendor fair accessible by public transport? No car!
  10. have you had your thyroid functions tested? ridged and brittle nails are a sign of hypothyroidism. they were one of my first signs. please beware!
  11. It's just been a few days since I got Enterolab results and a day since I got biopsy results which show gluten and casein intolerance. I've been gluten-free/CF for five days. I haven't yet noticed any symptom change. One change that I have seen is that I'm feeling very emotional - I can't stop crying. I don't know if this is due to the dietary changes...
  12. Does anyone know of any support groups in New York City? I know there's one in Westchester and stuff that happens upstate but have not heard of anything in the city. Any information would be helpful.
  13. If I were you, I would never see this guy again and let him know why. I told the the celiac "expert" I've consulted that no one would consider celiac or any type of malabsorption condition for me as I was not underweight. She thought it was absurd - of all the hundreds of celiacs she has seen, she said that only 5% are the supposed "classic" type with...
  14. duodenal biopsy. what made your biopsy "inconclusive"? I just received such a diagnosis. see Open Original Shared Link
  15. I feel particularly obligated to share this, since I had sounded the false alarm about testing at CDC (shame-faced). My doc called and clarified - apparently the discharge nurse had completely misinformed me. THe doc did indeed do 8-10 biopsies from TWO sites - the stomach and the duodenum. The stomach because she wanted to check for H. pylori (all clear...
  16. Hi gf4life, Your post makes things MUCH clearer - thank you. Wow, it seems like you have this figured out, so many family members with this I too have heard (from a nutritionist that I saw) that not all the genes associated with celiac have yet been identified. Therefore, it is only possible to rule celiac IN through genetic testing, and never...
  17. Hi Michael, I'm really trying to get, in Enterolab terms, what the difference is between someone with gluten sensitivity and celiac - what is the difference between me and a person with celiac in terms of our biochemical makeup and/or reaction to gluten? Do let us know what your doctor has to say. For Enterolab, you need one "complete" bowel movement...
  18. Hi to anyone who is following - I tested positive for gluten senstivity through Enterolab. I've posted the results here: Open Original Shared Link Still waiting for biospy results!
  19. Hi Michael, thanks for the detailed response. So if I have an active immune response to gluten AND have associated intestinal damage what distinguishes me from someone with celiac? The lack of celiac genes? The KIND of intestinal damage? If it is not villous atrophy, then what is the nature of the damage? Sorry for all the questions, just...
  20. I got my Enterolab results and would appreciate any help in interpreting the findings: Fecal Antigliadin IgA: 33 (normal <10) Fecal Antitissue Transglutaminase IgA: 30 (normal <10) Quantitative Microscopic Fecal Fat: 381 (normal <300) Fecal Anti-casein IgA: 23 (normal <10) HLA-DQBI Allele 1 0601 HLA-DQB1 Allele 2 0601 Serologic Equivalent...
  21. I have been so burned by doctors in the past few months I can now only go to a doctor that comes with high recommendations. I am also tired of going the allopathic route. I am looking for someone who is well-versed in celiac/gluten issues and is also up to date with vitamins and supplements. Also looking for someone who is invested in providing good patient...
  22. Hi Rohan, You should have the "full" celiac panel done which includes five tests. I couldn't tell from your post if you are currently in India. Please determine that the lab at which the tests are done is a reliable one, experienced with celiac testing. Here in the US, I believe Prometheus is considered the most reliable. Be aware however that it is...
  23. Someone told me that it could be that the doctor took more than two samples but put them all together in two bottles - I do hope that this is what the nurse was referring to when she said two samples were sent. And then it will turn out that I am unnecessarily freaking out. The results were supposed to be in after Wednesday but thus far I have received...
  24. Hi Beverly, I just noticed this post to me from way back when, which I had not seen before as I was off the board for a few months thinking (thanks to many misguided doctors) that I needed to get celiac out of my head. Thanks so so much for the words of support and suggestions on how to handle grad student responsibilties along with trying to doctor oneself...
  25. No theories from the fam. Celiac doctor offered differentials of tropical sprue and giardiasis. Am confused about the tropical sprue - she says the intestinal damage is the same in tropical and nontropical sprue (celiac), the difference being the absence of antibodies in the former. Wouldn't this make it sero (false) negative celiac then? I need to clarify...
