  1. My son had allergy testing (skin prick) done when he just turned two because he couldn't stop his runny nose. They tested for something like three dozen things and he was allergic to nearly every tree, bush and grass in the test. His back swelled up. He vomited on the way home from the overload of allergens and passed out for something like 20 hours straight...
  2. Don't I wish! I never realized how many cheeze-its, crackers and pretzels are just lying all over the ground until I had to be alert. This entire question came about because we were at a soccer game for one kid on Saturday and the baby managed to find a soggy old pretzel just hanging out in a huge field. How the heck did she find the ONE food source in...
  3. I truly think my middle kid makes dirt in some weird factory in our basement to give to the youngest. It's his special gift...
  4. Are you seeing the "drunk" symptoms appearing at the same time or around the same activity (before nap/after nap, needing food, needing to poop, etc)? Three year olds are like wild animals - so hard to understand! The only symptom that you're describing that seems enough for a phone call (for my personal taste) is the slurred speech. If that's truly new...
  5. I realize this seems like a silly question because soap and water is the best option. What do you do when you're out and about and your little celiac touches something that will seriously gluten them? I read that hand sanitizer won't work, but I can't find definitive research on that. What about a baby wipe? Would that get enough off until we can get...
  6. Thanks for the feedback! Fourmonkeysjumping - I'm not even interested in having them make gluten-free lunches in the cafeteria. Our elementary is huge (4 classes in each grade) so there are a lot of kids and some others could probably benefit from this even though there are no other celiacs in the school (according to the nurse). It's just a lot of...
  7. I am not a celiac, but I'm looking for any guidance you can provide. My 1.5 y/o is ready to start using the toilet and transitioning from diapers. She was DX about a month ago and has been 100% gluten-free for two weeks. During that time I've seen her stools become more of a "normal" consistency and at much more regular intervals. I wouldn't say that...
  8. My seven year old (2nd grade) has gotten a DX, but I haven't addressed anything with the school yet since she's not 100% gluten-free as she's having her scope at the end of the month. I have a couple of weeks to get all my thoughts in order. Please help me brainstorm who I talk to at the school and what should be addressed. * Do I need a 504? ...
  9. Good points! I have this box of gluten filled granola bars for a friend that I just went through. It's just organic junk food, but I found "snack bars" and "cheese crackers" - both with wheat flour as the first ingredient. It would have burned me up to have to buy anything considering how much food I gave away!! The middle kid would have loved cheese...
  10. Nope, they were tested because my youngest also didn't grow. Just having a pity party that two of my kids clearly weren't gaining weight and I blew it off. I'll move on with that, though. We are on our way to healthier lives.
  11. The house is already gluten-free. It's been scrubbed, new necessary kitchen items purchased, etc. I told the big kids that they have to eat their granola bar outside to keep all the crumbs out of the baby's reach. All my kids were "sick" and I couldn't even tell. I need a crappy mothering award...
  12. my other two kids got DX with celiac! Sheesh. The youngest (1.5) was DX on blood work alone since her number was so insanely high (two separate draws with crazy high numbers). Obviously this puts her siblings on high alert. Their blood came back elevated, but since it's elevated with a DX sibling it's more of an alarm. Come to find out that the...
  13. This is all new to me - the mother of a toddler celiac (and probably getting the DX for a school age celiac on Monday), but I think I'm going to scream bloody murder if one more person tells me it's not a big deal. Even my husband's aunt told us that since gluten-free food is easy to find that this is going to be easy. In less than a month I've had my...
  14. I actually considered this after walking around the pet store, but then I brought myself back to reality that I need to get my kids back on track with diet first. I will totally consider this in the future, though! Cyclinglady - the lab *does* inhale her food and lick and relick the bowl all day. The kids really love feeding her and being the one to...
  15. Do you have kids? I only wish it were easy enough to just tell them not to eat the food. But it isn't...so it's easier to work the dog around the baby's health. Thanks for the tip, cyclinglady! I went to Costco today and found the grain free food and some new gluten-free treats. They're basically chicken jerky, but I'll have one thrilled dog. ...
  16. Hi. The celiac in our house is the toddler so are eliminating all gluten - including the dog food and treats. I loaded up the car and took my minions to Petsmart today thinking I'd have maybe 1-2 options. Holy cow - I was so wrong! There were probably 15 options! There's an entire grain-free industry in dog food. It's all so expensive, too - looks like...
  17. Thanks for your reply! I'm going to start keeping lists of appropriate snacks - love your suggestions!
  18. I am puting something together for the early childhood center that my two youngest attend classes. The center is extremely accomodating and they would appreciate this guidance. These would be helpful suggestions, not requirements. 1. What would be approved gluten-free sensory table fillers? I know beans/lentils would be great. What about potato flakes...
  19. Yes, thank you for that. We haven't altered our diets yet - waiting to see the doctors first to see about additional testing.
  20. Hello all. I'm a regular old midwestern mom that is joining in for help and support. Last week I found out why my 1.5 year old dropped from 25% weight to 3% weight at 12 months...and hasn't really grown since. The Ped ran bloodwork *again* and she was 100+ for her celiac test. I am taking her to the dietician tomorrow and my husband and I take her to...
