ARCHIVED Yes, I Do Let Celiac Stop Me! You Too?
GFAnnie posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know we're supposed to be positive, and the big message whenever anyone gets a diagnosis of any sort is "Don't let it stop you from living your life!" or some such positive line to live by! Well, I've found that in the 8 months since my whole family has been diagnosed, I'm a heck of a lot happier if I lay low, avoid attending food related functions, skip... -
I have no idea idea if celiac can cause this, but my husband experienced the same thing you describe when tapering off of his antidepressant, and also a benzodiazepine. Any chance you have discontinued or starting taking these in the past year? I'm sure there are other reasons, but I thought I'd comment since he experinced the exact same sensation, and...

ARCHIVED First Big Barbeque/potluck Since Diagnosis.
GFAnnie posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This weekend we are attending our first big party since my whole family was diagnosed. It is a barbeque/potluck wedding reception. I plan on bringing a gluten free dish of course. But what I'm wondering is, is there anything you'll eat, other than what you bring? Because I'm going to have my kids with me, I'm sure they're going to see chips and fruit,... -
ARCHIVED Thinking Of Intentionally Glutening Myself.
GFAnnie replied to GFAnnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you so much everyone for taking the time to respond. There are a lot of good points here that keep throwing my decision back and forth! But it's really nice to see I'm not alone in this situation of not really knowing. My youngest has an appointment on Monday and I plan on bringing this all up with her, and talking about retesting, which is maybe... -
ARCHIVED Thinking Of Intentionally Glutening Myself.
GFAnnie replied to GFAnnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you so much for that link! I had no idea about that recommendation and that would probably help me a lot with this feeling of cluelessness. I will talk to my doctor soon - my baby has an appointment coming up anyway. And yeah, I might attempt a bit of gluten too, just to see what happens. But of course, symptoms or not, it would just be the one test... -
ARCHIVED Thinking Of Intentionally Glutening Myself.
GFAnnie replied to GFAnnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I guess another option is a follow-up blood test? Just to see if we're on target? How long does someone need to be gluten free for their tests to come out clear, typically? (Of course I'm still battling with my insurance company to pay for the tests for myself and my son back in January!) -
ARCHIVED Thinking Of Intentionally Glutening Myself.
GFAnnie replied to GFAnnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
RMJ - thank you for responding. If you think of it, could you please come back here and post after you talk to your doctor? I would be curious to see what she advises. I hate being in this "haze" about glutening. I find it makes me more restrictive than those with clear symptoms because I have no idea what the story is. I don't want to ever eat in restaurants... -
ARCHIVED Thinking Of Intentionally Glutening Myself.
GFAnnie replied to GFAnnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'll try to make my diagnois story as short as possible. My baby was labeled "failure to thrive" due to weight gain issues. I had read that celiacs can cause this, and my niece (sisters child) has celiacs and I knew it was genetic, so stopped giving him gluten and his weight shot up very quickly, and his eczema improved. I told his doctor this, but because... -
ARCHIVED Thinking Of Intentionally Glutening Myself.
GFAnnie posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have been gluten free since January, as have my one and three year old. I have DH, and never had any obvious digestive symptoms. My one and three year old are not really able to communicate their symptoms well (three year old has whatever aches and pains mommy or daddy are having, or whenever he needs attention). Also, I don't believe my three year old... -
ARCHIVED How Long After Gluten Free Diet?
GFAnnie replied to frustratedpenguin's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm so sorry for what you're going through right now. I don't know the answer to your question, but I once read a study (Sweedish, I think?) about pregnancy and celiacs, and in the study the women followed a strict gluten free diet for two years before getting pregnant to study pregnancy outcomes vs women who did not follow a gluten free diet. So perhaps... -
ARCHIVED Tell Me About Your Corn Sensitivity.
GFAnnie replied to GFAnnie's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thank you so much everyone. It seems like the answers run the gamut. I am thinking that probably I do fall under the "corn is hard for everyone to digest" category. For the past 48 hours I've given up all obvious corn (corn, corn meal/flour, corn starch) and haven't had any pain or bloating at all. I'm sure that some of the foods probably had some of... -
ARCHIVED Tell Me About Your Corn Sensitivity.
GFAnnie posted a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Now that I've been gluten free for five months I'm starting to suspect I may be having a problem with corn as well. I've been having occasional severe stomach pains and massive bloating (of the 8 months pregnant variety) that is becoming less and less "occasional". It's starting to appear to me that this is happening after eating foods with corn. Ugh! ... -
ARCHIVED No Symptoms But Please Bend Over Backwards Hosts!
GFAnnie posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know there are 1000 posts about this in varying forms but here we go - my family is making their first road trip to visit family and stay with them post celiac diagnosis. My MIL has asked virtually no questions about our diet or food prep and she's usually a question asker. My husband feels sheepish about saying much, other than, yes, food needs to be... -
ARCHIVED Chili Powder? Mccormick, Yes Or No
GFAnnie posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was hoping to make chili this weekend and it suddenly hit me that I have no idea if my chili powder is safe or not. I keep hearing that McCormick is okay but then it's not a "single ingredient" spice. So I googled it and found this: Open Original Shared Link I guess this means McCormick Chili Powder is out? Any suggestions for alternatives? -
Very true. Seems as though we're reaching an age where more specialists are needed in more fields, and should be relied on much more heavily.

Not sure if this sad or positive, but I'm finding the "patients become the experts" to apply to many medical issues these days. Positive because patients are able to be so well infomed now, mostly thanks to the internet, but also quite sad and frustrating to go to the doctor when having a medical issue and coming to the realization that you know more than...

ARCHIVED Did Anyone Meet With A Dietician?
GFAnnie posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My doctor recommeded that I make an appointment with the dietician in their office when she gave me the diagnosis. I went ahead and did so, but I'm wondering how helpful it will actually be. It seems like all the research and answers are online. I'm not sure how helpful this person can actually be. It's a ninety minute appointment so she certainly has... -
ARCHIVED Coeliac Toddler?
GFAnnie replied to cosmicmouse's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Have you also eliminated soy? Soy intolerance usually goes hand in hand with dairy intolerance in infants and toddlers. My three year old had this when he was younger. It is often refered to as MSPI (Milk Soy Protein Intolerance). And realize that soy is in everything processed! Most people hear "soy" and think of veggie burgers, but soy is actually in... -
ARCHIVED Taking This Too Seriously, Or Not Seriously Enough? Get Rid Of Pets Too?
GFAnnie replied to GFAnnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you! This is the kind of feedback I'm in need of. I really don't feel like I have my compass set on the gluten-free quest! I think it's harder having two small children with it. If it was just me, I don't think it would be so difficult to avoid worrying about hidden gluten lurking in everything and killing me! I just really want to give my kids... -
ARCHIVED Taking This Too Seriously, Or Not Seriously Enough? Get Rid Of Pets Too?
GFAnnie posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In the past three weeks both myself and my three year old have been diagnosed with celiac. In the meantime, I would put money on my one year old also having it, as he was really the reason I decided to get myself tested, since he's got a littany of symptoms and has not been eating gluten in a while so he of course couldn't be tested. (and I should add that... -
ARCHIVED Shopped But Feel Like I Failed!
GFAnnie replied to GFAnnie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ahhhh... thank you! So stressful but I'm sure it will become second nature eventually. So if an item says "Gluten Free" but then says it was produced in a facility that manufactures wheat, I should probably avoid, right? It's crazy how willy-nilly the gluten free labeling rules seem to be. -
ARCHIVED Has Your Reaction To Gluten Changed?
GFAnnie replied to GFAnnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks everyone. This makes perfect sense and in an odd way I'm glad to know I'll probably have distinct symptoms once I'm sucessfully gluten free. I think it's pretty much necessary to keep motivated and to understand my body and how safe the foods are that I'm eating. -
ARCHIVED Shopped But Feel Like I Failed!
GFAnnie posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Did my first grocery shopping since being diagnosed today and I have a feeling I blew it! I have an appointment with a nutritionist next week and I'm sure she'll help me, but I'd love some feedback on some of these items I'm unsure about. Besides the obvious safe stuff like fruits and veggies (I'm vegetarian so no meat.) here are grey area items: Ocean... -
ARCHIVED Positive Blood Test - Didn't Even Really Notice Any Symptoms?!
GFAnnie replied to GFAnnie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, I have a copy of the test results but I'm not really sure how to read it! The tests done were the Immunoglobulin A - Tissue Transglutaminase AB, IGA. The Gliadin (Deamidated) AB (IGG, IGA). Anyway, my three year old got tested today too so I'll be curious to see what happens. Hopefully it's just me. And I have no idea how my one year old will be... -
ARCHIVED Tortilla/corn Chips?
GFAnnie posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Does anyone know of a truly gluten-free tortilla chip? I've seen posts about how of course, most do not have gluten ingredients, but there's a real issue with cc. Is there a totally safe brand out there? I'm about to embark on a gluten-free life and this is one product I'm really hoping I can find. Thanks!
