    Well, I was doing Atkins to lose a few lbs, and I just burned out on the restrictive nature of the diet....not a lot of veggies....just one salad a day etc. I really missed fruit, stuff like that. So I went off the diet and the bad grain stuff crept back in.

    I'm just wondering...when you eat something with gluten, how soon do you get an identifiable reaction? Same day? Hours later? Next day? And what kind of things do you feel first? And then, when you do react , how long does it typically last?

    I imagine you COULD die from celiac disease....my mom almost did, but it was from years of no one being able to figure out what she had. She had gotten terribly thin...about 85 lbs. when her normal weight would be 115 to 120. She was absorbing almost no nutrients at that point, and was literally starving to death.     Thanks so much for the input. How about the length of time of the "reactions", if that's what it is. An hour or two here or there has been typical for me. Many incidences of feeling sick a couple of hours after dinner, for example. Today, however, after my whatever it was yesterday, I still don't feel so great, so this is going on for a good 12 hours...

    I don't expect every doctor to know everything. However, what I DO expect is for a doctor to have learned to be a diagnostician, and furthermore, to actually have an interest in solving a patient's problem. If a doctor doesn't know how to diagnose something, if a patient comes in thinking he/she might have celiac disease and the doctor doesn't know about...

    My 84 year old mom has celiac disease. She nearly died because when it became full blown around 42 years ago, no one knew a thing about it. Doctors thought she "made up" her symtoms, that she was neurotic. She got down to 85 lbs. and the villi in her intentines were nearly gone. But she was lucky and met a doctor who knew about celiac disease and tested...
