  1. I am fairly suspicious my mother in law has it....all her symptoms cropped up suddenly in 1967 just after a serious hysterectomy....she developed psoriasis, migraines, and what she calls IBS, lots of other things that are pretty suspicious of celiac disease. My mom's celiac disease was triggered by her hysterectomy, too. BUt with my mother in law, she simply...
  2. My local health food store just got in a line of Nana's cookie products and I've been testing them. So far I've tried her Nana Banana cookie bars, Chocolate munch cookie bars (both of these are great!), also Berry Vanilla cookie bars (pretty good), and then there were also huge individual cookies...the Lemon cookie was great. The big chocolate one I didn...
  3. Hmmm...let's see. Multiple times extensive testing for asthma over a 20 year period. Even a heart specialist checking for heart related causes for my incessant cough and difficulty breathing. Allergists. Tested for thyroid. Various migraine treatments. Blood pressure meds that don't work. No one EVER suggested this. Not once. A few times when I...
  4. Boy, I wish I had the answer to this one! I've always been a bit of a night owl, but it seems like the last 4 or 5 years, and particularly this last year, there are some nights where I simply cannot fall asleep. My body will feel exhausted, but my head won't cooperate. Now your idea about having some sort of gluten is interesting...I'll have to keep...
  5. Yes...I did have the endometrial eblation. The whole thing was frightening....I just started a period and the bleeding was unbelievably heavy (it got to the point of several heavy pads an hour) and just didn't stop, and I didn't realize about the anemia caused by that for awhile. After a couple of weeks of that, I had gotten terribly weak and was white...
  6. Well, this is good, but of course there isn't and will never be huge interest from the usual supporters of research (drug companies) due to the fact that celiac disease is treated by diet, not drugs. There's no profit in dietary changes! Of course, I'm sure drug companies are working on SOMETHING all celiac patients can lighten their wallets by taking endlessly...
  7. Has anyone ever come across an explanation for the reason WHY someone with celiac disease would GAIN weight rather than lose it? The fact that I never lost weight like my mom did was the reason why I never suspected celiac disease for myself all these years. And doctors seem to have the same attitude with their sketchy knowledge of celiac disease in general...
  8. Weight has been a huge issue for me. My whole life, despite ongoing digestive upsets, I neither lost nor gained weight, I was really a perfect weight even though I was quite a sugar junkie. But I never age huge amounts of food. I gained 60 lbs. with my daughter when I was 20 but lost it quickly. I stayed at about 130 lbs. (I'm 5'8") for the next 16 years...
  9. I wonder what happens on the gluten free setting that would be different??? Has anyone tried the various bread mixes on a machine??
  10. I was just looking for reviews on bread machines and found this new one from Cuisinart...is says it has a gluten free setting. Does anyone have this? Open Original Shared Link
  11. No, just a regular lab. The doc did a blood order for his cholesterol, and added on a "celiac panel" at my request. That later had to be clarified to "gluten antibody and gluten sensitivity" test. Who knows what was actually done, I'll find that out today. No one ever seems to know anything much about all this. I just took advantage of the situation...
  12. My 19 year old son just had a physical, and since he was getting a cholesterol test done I decided what the heck, get the gluten antibody/gluten sensitivity test done too. The doc left a message and said his test was negative. I didn't totally suspect my son might have celiac, but he does seem to have digestive issues of a strange, familiar nature, and...
  13. This is a curious couple of things to eat for constipation....where did you learn about this? And how on earth do you eat a raw jalapeno....doesn't it burn your mouth to eat that much???? And do you eat a red or green bell pepper? Carole

    ARCHIVED Sleep

Before going gluten-free I would get sleepy in the daytime a lot...and every time we'd be in the car I would get sleepy...honestly, I never wanted to drive longer distances because I was afraid I'd fall asleep driving. But then at night I'd never be able to get to sleep early, and every so often I have a night where I can never fall asleep. My body will...
  15. I really need to do one of those elimination diet tests myself, there seem to be so many things I'm suspicious of. Right now, besides gluten things, I'm not eating dairy, corn, soy (I'll never eat that again, it really makes me sick), sugar, and I've switched to green decaf tea because the black tea w/splenda I was drinking was possibly a problem...don't...
  16. Greg....with such wonderful improvements on a gluten free diet, why on earth not stay with it? The fact is, most doctors know little to nothing about celiac disease, and therefore don't tend to look that way in a diagnosis. The results of your diet tell you a lot. I'd suggest that you get some books on celiac...Dangerous Grains is a great one....go to...
  17. I'm curious about the reactions you all get if you get glutened. I myself have only been gluten free since Nov. 25, with just a couple of slip-ups (a bunch of those blasted Xmas cookies I made for the family found their way into my stomach ). Anyhow, I'm just coming out of 3 horrible days in which my reaction or whatever it was consisted of horrible stomach...
  18. Success! Sample produced at 10:00 a.m., pickup promptly at 12:00. Whew! That was cutting it close...I thought I might have to cancel! I too was kind of freaked about the freezer part...but I'm laughing now too about that. No one knew at home, and I think I'll keep it that way!
  19. You know, I haven't been tested for anemia in years. But I really bruise easily, so given the connection that seems to exist between anemia and celiac disease, I probably sholuld get tested! I never thought of it.....I improved after the surgery by taking iron pills for a couple of months, and I stopped looking like a ghost fairly quickly, so it never occurred...

    ARCHIVED Migraines

I was plagued by migraines for a good 20+ years. I would panic if my Imitrex ran out. I eliminated my migraines by these things: drastic reduction in wheat and dairy (although I hadn't yet cut them out), and almost total elimination of sugar. PLUS...very regular exercise (cardio and weights) and drinking a lot of water. Almost no caffeine except for...
  21. So what's the oats verdict...did any of you try them and did you notice any reaction?
  22. Which one of their bread mixes did you try? Also...did you use a bread machine? Have you tried their banana bread mix or the pumpkin break one?
  23. Being new to eating gluten-free, I'm trying to learn about the good products and would love to see a thread going where people can post specific items they really like a lot. I've discovered a few things I really like thus far....items I would eat even if not eating gluten-free and also items my non celiac hubby keeps getting into and eating up because...
  24. Abdullah...your and your wife are indeed fortunate to have found a local doctor who is knowledgeable about celiac disease. We in the U.S. aren't so fortunate....most doctors still don't know much about it! By the way, my husband and I were university teachers in Saudi Arabia for 8 years, and we were lucky enough to make a brief visit to Qatar...a lovely...
  25. I thought I asked this before, but couldn't find it anywhere so perhaps not. So I've had intermittent digestive problems for at least 20 years, and had tentatively decided at the very least I had a problem with dairy, so I ate it in tiny amounts and not every day. I didn't think of gluten because I wasn't underweight; in fact, I was 20 lbs, too heavy...
