I looovvvve chocolate, but have to be careful with it. I've found a couple of dark semi-sweet chocolate that are fairly simple and have nothing strange and also no milk in them. A small amount of this doesn't bother me. However, my favorite is the Lindt Extra Creamy milk chocolate one, and that one definitely bothers me big time. I assume it's the milk...

Same with me....I have only 2 cavities, and they were actually caused due to defects and splitting. My back molar also had to be pulled, and the other back one was starting to do the same thing so I had to cap it. I think I read that some people can have teeth problems...ridges and things that can lead to chipping/breaking.

ARCHIVED What Is The Difference Between Celiac & Gluten Intolerance?
CMCM replied to skurtz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I swiped this from the Enterolab information section: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CELIAC SPRUE & GLUTEN SENSITIVITY? Gluten sensitivity implies that a person's immune system is intolerant of gluten in the diet and is forming antibodies or displaying some other evidence of an inflammatory reaction. When these reactions cause small intestinal damage... -

ARCHIVED How Do I Get My Mother To Understand
CMCM replied to fujiwabbit's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The biggest thing I've learned in my life is that you can't convince ANYONE of ANYTHING if they don't want to hear it. Heck, sometimes you can't even convince YOURSELF of something! This is such a wheat-dominated society, and most of our goddies are wheat based, and so much enjoyment comes from eating these addictive wheat foods....it's a real bear to give... -

ARCHIVED Picked Up A Copy Of Labs
CMCM replied to 4tomorrow's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I sent my test in (it was picked up) on Jan. 3, and they emailed my results on Jan. 18, so that's about 2 weeks. I later ordered the eggs/yeast/soy test (on the 24th of Jan.) and I still don't have results for that one. At the time I ordered that test they said 2 to 3 weeks for results. I think they are currently kind of busy. I also noticed the price... -
ARCHIVED Worried And Wondering!
CMCM replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your reaction to the cappuccino is very suspicious. The same thing has happened to me....but it doesn't happen every single time. I finally got the Enterolab tests and found, not surprisingly, that I had both the celiac gene AND a second one for gluten sensitivity. The surprise in my testing was that I was also casein sensitive. The casein sensitivity... -

I can understand your situation wanted to satisfy your mother in law, but just keep in mind that this is YOUR body and YOUR life. My mom went thru 10 years of everyone thinking she was nutty with her complaints....and at that time she had not idea celiac disease even existed, she just was a mess physically. Even the doctors would say things like "Well now... -
ARCHIVED Endocrinologist Appt From Hell
CMCM replied to slpinsd's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have a very sweet, nice GP who, when I discussed the possibility of celiac disease, readily admitted how very little he knew about it, and then he said "You know more about it than I do." Refreshingly honest, BUT....why didn't he then go find out more about it????? -
ARCHIVED Picked Up A Copy Of Labs
CMCM replied to 4tomorrow's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Personally, I think you have a doctor who is fairly ignorant about celiac disease. She has her little textbook two paragraphs of information and she is going by that. If you don't fit the textbook profile (distended belly, wasting, blah blah blah) you don't have it. In Dana Korn's book "Wheat Free, Worry Free" she has a long article written by a doctor... -
There are NO magic diet pills, believe me. You can go overboard with gluten free items (cookies, cakes etc.) and gain weight from too much of those....high sugar, high calorie items. The best thing is eating 5 or so small meals a day (basically eating small amounts every 2-3 hours). This is a metabolism boosting thing...the body exerts energy digesting...

ARCHIVED Non Celiac/gluten Intolerant
CMCM replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A blood test is not necessarily the final word on whether or not you have celiac. I would really suggest the full panel offered by Enterolab. Thru that test, I was able to find out that I have TWO genes....a celiac one and one for gluten sensitivity. I found out I was casein sensitive as well. With Enterolab, they say you can accurately test when you... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Know If I Am Lactose Intolerant?
CMCM replied to wilbragirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't think it is always part of celiac disease. My mom was diagnosed 40+ years ago....she had malabsorption so bad and it took so long to actually diagnose her that she nearly died. Despite how bad her intestinal damage was, she has never had any problem at all with dairy. On the other hand, I thought for a good 20 years I had lactose intolerance... -
ARCHIVED Even People Who"know" Don't Know
CMCM replied to chrissy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My 20 year old son has the serious peanut allergy (we found out when he was almost two). I fear for him continually because this could possibly kill him very quickly if he got some "hidden" peanut (and yes, peanut is hidden in a lot of weird, unexpected things, too!). It's hard to make people understand the seriousness of his allergy. I remember a person... -
I'm also 56, and just got officially diagnosed a couple of weeks ago! My mom was diagnosed with celiac 40+ years ago, but I never thought I fit the profile so didn't suspect it for myself. However, like you I have had weird health issues since at least age 20, and When I finally got gene tested, the HUGE family surprise was that I not only had the celiac...

ARCHIVED Gluten Reaction?
CMCM replied to Emma's Mom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
What really got me on the serious search for information was an intense bout of dizziness. I've had minor dizzy spells before for years and year, just sporadic dizzy spells though, but the one I had last November was a real doozie. It just came on out of the blue, and got progressively worse over about a 10 minute period....to the point where I struggled... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Avoiding Alcohol While Their Intestines Heal?
CMCM replied to GlutenFreeAl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've never been able to drink beer or other "hard" alcohols...now I know why! I do drink small amounts of red wine several times a week, it it doesn't appear to bother me at all. -
ARCHIVED Casein? Food Allergies? Lactose?
CMCM replied to elfkin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Allergies are a real mess to sort out because people rarely, if ever, have just one allergy or sensitivity. Having a celiac mother, I knew I had that possibility. I had GI problems and other things going on for most of my life (I'm 56). I figured for a good 25 years that I was lactose intolerant, so I minimized dairy and took lactaid pills (didn't help... -
ARCHIVED Test Results - All Negative
CMCM replied to pattic's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well, supposedly not all the celiac/gluten sensitivity genes have been identified. You might also consider the possibility of casein sensitivity. For myself, even though I tested with both the celiac gene and the gluten sensitivty one, my most major food reactions were from dairy. I was told to not only eliminate gluten but also dairy, and was told that... -
ARCHIVED Newly gluten-free
CMCM replied to Lollie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
From the reading I've done, there are apparently celiac specialists who would like to see the world "celiac disease" eliminated, and simply call the whole thing "gluten sensitivity." These researchers feel gluten sensitivity is a spectrum of reactivity, with what is currently called "celiac disease" merely being a more extreme point on the spectrum, with... -
ARCHIVED So Confused....
CMCM replied to danikali's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My symptoms are all over the map and there is no consistency at all. I can get terrible GI one time, nausea another, terrible muscle aches, and so on. My reactions are also affected by casein, and often the casein reaction is worse than for gluten. Casein for me causes terrible GI problems, D, and sometimes muscle aches. The gluten is less well defined... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab
CMCM replied to 4tomorrow's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Absolutely worth every penny to me. I looked at all the individual tests, and decided the complete panel for $350 was definitely the cheapest way to find out the most: the genes (I had TWO of them!! I knew my mom had celiac, but my late father's contribution of a 2nd gene was a complete surprise!). That bit of knowledge (that I had 2 genes, one for celiac...
