  1. There's a recipe for Magnificent Milo Breading Mix at this web site (Open Original Shared Link) that we like a lot. I keep some of that made up all the time. Milo is another name for sorghum. Please do post if you find one you like! Sometimes I just mix up some herbs and use them as a rub.
  2. I've read various comments that gluten-free food isn't particularly healthy, and doesn't taste as good ... I was just curious how many people here experimented with different flours until they came up with a flour blend they like that is relatively healthy? My own blend doesn't use a lot of rice flour or starch, and substitutes cup for cup for all-purpose...
  3. Here are a couple of references: Open Original Shared Link (search for "grape" as the material is about half-way down the page). Open Original Shared Link Before going gluten-free I had problems so bad I thought I had MS. I hurt so much I had fibromyalgia. Being gluten-free is just so awesome!
  4. Ya know, it always seemed to me like there was indeed a difference. Now now too long ago in another part of the internet, a more scientifically educated person noted something about the particular chain of events set off in the body by gluten, for instance, the peptide formed from gluten is presented by the Celiac genes that we have to a T-cell, and the...
  5. I suspect you are right. I've been gluten-free now for 3 and a half years. The improvement in my health has been just tremendous, yet there's damage from all the decades before going gluten-free. Some of this is slowly iimproving, some not improving too much at all. But we all die of something. I don't dwell on it. I'm just so glad to have these good...
  6. I've backpacked a couple of times, just overnight, and have done ok. For the first day out I like to carry veggies like carrots that don't go bad too quickly. Ener-G granola bars are great. Pricey, but good, solid food. Nuts and dried fruit for trail mix, or make my own monster cookies to pack along. For a hot evening meal I might do the following...
  7. I love feeling good. Every time I think about it I absolutely love not being in chronic pain from arthritis anymore. No Advil just to sleep at night anymore. When I started to feel good I took up hiking! I get the neurological problems. I like being able to talk without stuttering, not worry about having a seizure, and not trip over my own feet. I...
  8. Try going low-carb for a few days. That usually works for me. No breads/grains, go easy on the fruit, no processed sugar. But eat lots of vegetables. Eating yogurt usually helps too -- get the plain (unflavored) kind with live cultures. Adding a little honey to it will make it taste better. Good luck!
  9. Thanks for the suggestion on the nut butters. I'll start looking into that. Does your son sleep restlessly? My companion was extremely restless at night before we went gluten-free. Now that he's quit with dairy too he's sleeping so sound and quiet it's amazing. He doesn't even snore now. I wonder if you could switch to an alternate milk for a...
  10. Ugh! I hate it when that happens! I'm guessing you probably had a sugar-low after eating the candy. Are you familiar with the low-carb diet and the glycemic index? One of the main ideas behind both of them is that eating high carb, sugary food causes your blood sugar to spike, and then fall, causing a person to become really hungry and crave sugar again...
  11. I'm hoping someone here can let me know if they've had a similar experience with dairy and behavior ... I went gluten-free 3-1/2 years ago (self-diagnosed), and my companion went gluten-free 7 months after I did (also self-diagnosed). We both figured out eventually that we get mood swings (rage and depression, and very vocal about it) on the 4th day after...
  12. Outback is good! But when you order the vegetables plain they always try to talk you into ordering them the regular way since they "only put a little butter" on them. Don't fall for that one! Even once when I ordered them plain and the waitress wrote "gluten free" on the top of the order, the kitchen messed it up and I was running to the bathroom before...
  13. Can't imagine why it would not be possible. It even sounds like an interesting opportunity. I'm pretty close to yeast-free or I'd give it a try myself -- maybe I will do that anyway. Come to think of it, injera, which is an Ethiopian pancake-like flat bread made from teff, is a sourdough bread that ferments overnight. Check any sourdough starter recipe...
