  1. With that being said, my reaction wasn’t severe because the contact with the gluten was minimal. I’ve also gotten the “gluten” gas when I tried another brand of powdered parrot food that supposedly didn’t have gluten directly in the ingredients, the dust in the air gets me. Again, no severe reactions. So, thinking about it, I’d change my answer to possible...
  2. It’s happened to me before when I opened a new bag of pellets for my parrot that I thought didn’t have any gluten grains in it (the prior bags didn’t make me sick). I instantly got “gluten” gas (my first symptom when I get glutened, happens immediately). The dust gets stirred up so I’d say it’s probable that it was the dog food!
  3. I’m not an expert, but I think it’s possible. I’ve been glutened from standing in the path of exhaust from a food truck (you know the air that blows out from the top?) and I’ve been glutened walking into makeup stores. If it was airborne when you were at the register, I would say it’s probably that you “ingested” it. I think particles can be carried into ...
  4. Whenever I see recycled-looking packaging, it makes me nervous. I even saw a “wheat bowl” in the grocery store the other day…at least it was clearly labeled 😅
  5. It’s funny because after I posted my response…I was thinking the same thing lol. “What if I just told this person that cigarette smoke is safe, but the ones that the contractors happened to be smoking were gluten-free and the ones smoked in their apartment weren’t.” For your sake I really do hope it’s not, smoke gets into everything 😭. Fingers crossed that y...
  6. Last year, the owner of the condo unit under mine had two contractors working every day for about two weeks and they chainsmoked literally back-to-back. My unit was flooded with smoke (sometimes it was so bad that I coughed and my eyes watered). I’m extremely sensitive to gluten (including airborne, touching surfaces, etc) and did not get sick from it at a...
  7. Have you checked your skincare/personal care products?
  8. I hadn’t heard of Cargill until now, but I’m wondering the same thing. Hopefully companies will know where their flour is sourced from and will issue recalls on any of their items that were impacted. I saw a lot of people mentioning the concern about this potentially causing contamination in 100% gluten free factory facilities, which could take forever to ...
  9. An article from Gluten Free Watchdog: https://www.glutenfreewatchdog.org/news/product-recall-millions-of-pounds-of-cargill-soy-flour-have-been-recalled-because-of-gluten/
  10. In case people haven’t seen it, I wanted to share this FDA recall report for soy flour and soy protein that contained over 20ppm of gluten (based on my understanding): https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/ires/?Event=92013 You can find the recalls at the bottom of this page by filtering with the recalling firm name “Cargill, Inc Corporate Hea...
  11. Do you know what the ingredients were in the polish you used? I use the Sinful brand nail polishes and haven’t had any issues with them (I had researched beforehand to make sure they were safe). My friend who is a nail artist told me that some gel nail polishes have gluten in them too.
  12. Oh the animal feed had both oats AND wheat, not just oats. But yeah I found out that I react to oats because I would get sick when I ate cheerios and kind bars, which was disappointing. I also got dermatitis herpetiformis rashes when I used a hair color product that had oats in it (also disappointing). Granted, after those instances I’ve been too paranoid t...
  13. Yeah this is exactly how I discovered that the pellets I had switched my parrot to that I thought didn’t contain any wheat or oats either did, or there was some cross-contamination. I opened a new bag and I guess the puff of the dust blowing up at my face was enough for my body to start immediately reacting. Finding purchasable healthy parrot food that d...
  14. I guess it depends on your sensitivity level? I’m extremely sensitive. For example, when I had movers move me from one apartment to another, I specifically told them I had allergies and if they were going to eat that they need to wash their hands afterwards. Unfortunately, I think they ate between loading my boxes and then unloading them at my new place (...
  15. I’ve actually gotten glutened from simply putting something in my mouth, I hadn’t even swallowed it, it shocked me honestly. Perhaps I had actually swallowed a bit without noticing? I also get glutened from the air without even thinking about gluten being in the air. I’m no scientist, and I haven’t researched this, but maybe some people’s bodies are hyper...
  16. Not quite the bread aisle, but I 1000% get glutened from the air. I’ve been in 3 stores in the past maybe 2 months that smelled strongly of a fragrance, and I almost immediately started getting my “gluten” gas (aka my first sign that I’ve been glutened, or dairy-ed). It was in an Ulta, a Whole Foods, & a Joann Fabrics (today). I also get sick standin...
  17. Oh boy…I consume a lot of food with chili pepper/powder in it. Though I guess it’s similar how it is with oats for some celiacs - some have cross-reactivity, some don’t.
  18. It’s been 4 years since this post, but I have a dairy intolerance in addition to gluten (body thinks it’s the same thing) and found out last month that a medication (small tablet) I had been taking daily starting in July 2021 had lactose monohydrate in it. When I first started taking the medication in July, I had noticed that I was getting bloated and sta...
  19. I am located in the United States in northern Virginia, and this is something I’ve been worried about. Thankfully, the gluten and dairy-free items have not been wiped out in stores that I have been to!
  20. It actually took me 6 months after my diagnosis to figure it out! (I didn’t think about it until I got really sick after putting on chapstick and decided to check the ingredients and nearly had a heart attack when I saw wheat germ oil.) It doesn’t always cross everyone’s mind, especially since there are so many health sources (looking at you, WebMD) that...
  21. Thank you so much for sharing your story! I also cant have gluten (including oats) or dairy, I'm extremely sensitive (I've gotten sick many times just from gluten blowing around), and I'm not naturally assertive so this struck home. Does my experience encourage you to travel? Yes! It's always good to hear about kind people who care and...
  22. Yeah it took me about a year to figure everything out too, I’m about 2 years and 3 months into my diagnosis. The first year was the worst - this is off topic but also check your personal care products, I cut gluten out of my diet but didn’t realize my lotion had oats, my chapstick and body wash and hairspray had wheat in it, etc. I also realized that dai...
  23. I found a couple places that I could eat safely (a Peruvian chicken place, pho restaurants, sushi restaurants with gluten-free soy sauce, Korean BBQ restaurants, hot pot restaurants with gluten-free options, Chick-fil-A, Nando’s Peri Peri, PF Chang’s) and I usually stick with those and offer them as options when going out with friends or when I would go ...
  24. I recently had a reaction after forgetting that my boyfriend had eaten some ice cream with Oreo's in it just 5 minutes earlier (I react to both gluten and dairy) and we kissed each other lightly. For the next couple of hours, my temperature shot up and I had body aches, chills, fatigue, and gas. He was visiting me for a couple weeks at my place (we're in...
